Collaborating outside your school
You can now share files with users outside your domain who don’t have a Google account and allow them to collaborate and/or comment. Previously they were forced to create a Google account in order to be a collaborator or commenter. This would be ideal for documents shared by a school board or committee that wishes to work together or even collaborating with parents who do not have a Google account. The way it works is via email and a PIN code. This type of sharing doess need to be enabled via the admin console. Full details here
Just as we are all heading back to face to face teaching, Google Meet have released a stack of new features in September:
up to 49 users, just have to select tiled view in settings
blur background (still no sign of custom backgrounds like in Zoom!)
open a Jamboard (collaborative whiteboard) from within a Meet
customise participant settings including disabling chat and/or screen sharing
G SUITE UPDATES

Here’s one to make sure you let all of your staff know and remind them about. Previously our Drive Trash had no expiry, meaning it literally kept everything there forever! This has now changed to 30 days retention before being auto deleted.

Have you heard of G Suite Enterprise for Education?
G Suite for Education has been and, according to Google, will always be free. The Enterprise version of G Suite for Education comes at a cost and brings with it a host of advanced features. Depending on your school's size, sector and appetite for additional security it may be worth investigating.
Speaking from the perspective of a primary school, we have looked closely at the offering and in our opinion it is not a suitable investment. The advanced Meet settings, originality reports and advanced security and admin seemed tailored to larger secondary and tertiary institutions. Folders in Shared Drives
Up until now you have not been able to share a particular folder within a Shared Drive- this feature has now been rolled out to all users. This is particularly useful as you may have a set of permissions that apply to the whole Shared Drive but you have one specific folder that needs additional collaborators. If you use Shared Drives this is definitely something you need to wrap your head around, read the full release here.

Whilst junior students are small, they have huge imaginations with so much to say yet they are not always able to express themselves fully through writing or illustrations. This is where the app 30 Hands comes into play, an app that is easy for young students to learn and create and quite like our young students has a lot to offer. 30 Hands allows you to create simple but engaging presentations using photos, drawings and text, not to mention you are able to record voice over your slides to create a more engaging presentation.
It is so easy to use and in just a few simple steps students can create a completed presentation to explore and demonstrate their learning. Some successful lessons and ideas include:
Creating or retelling a narrative - A perfect app for creating picture storybooks and retelling narratives. Students absolutely love using 30 Hands to create their own stories. By adding backgrounds, images and drawing students can create their own stories and turn them into a read-aloud to be shared with classmates.
Explain different strategies to solve a mathematical problem - I think all teachers can agree that when students solve a problem we want to know how they got their answer. The draw tool is perfect for this. Start by simply drawing your answer just like you would on paper and finish by recording an explanation of your thinking. I have loved creating a presentation that is continually added to so I can monitor the development of thinking and problem solving strategies.
Demonstrate understanding of the scientific concepts - By combining a range of tools found in the app, students can document the life cycle of an animal. Our Prep students watched and observed the life cycle of a butterfly and used the different slide types to demonstrate their understanding of the life cycle. Students used the draw tool to show an egg on a leaf and used the camera tool to take images of the caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly. They labeled each image with text and used the recording tool to explain their understanding.
$20 doesn't get you much these days but it can buy you and your school a micro:bit. So often schools purchase expensive coding & robotics equipment for it to sit idle for most of the year. If bang for your buck is what you're after, combined with a low floor and high ceiling...then the micro:bit should be high on your shopping list.

What is an interactive flat panel (IFP)?
It’s a touchscreen “TV” with it’s own Android operating system. In other words it’s like having a 65 inch tablet in your classroom.
What’s the deal with sharing my laptop screen to the board?
Once you install the InstaShare software to your computer (Mac or Windows), you can simply and wirelessly cast your screen to the board. But wait, there’s more! Your screen can then be interacted with directly on the IFP using touch.
What’s the touch & interactivity like?
This is where the RP02 panels absolutely shine. The touch accuracy and responsiveness has improved dramatically from the previous model (RP01). BenQ calls the new touch technology 'Zero Bonding' and 'Fine IR Plus', but all you need to know is that it feels so accurate to the touch it’s a world of difference from any large screen I’ve interacted with before. It also allows for multiple simultaneous touch (e.g. have different students/groups sharing ideas at the same time in different colours). Writing this review I was stumped as to how I could convey how responsive, sensitive and accurate the touch was on this new panel...so I decided to follow a drawing tutorial on YouTube to show our readers just how good it was. This illustration was using the “brush” tool in EZWrite.
How can the new BenQ IFP actually support innovation and enhance learning and teaching?
Like any tech tool, unless it supports and enhances more effective learning and teaching...then it’s just a shiny, novel gadget. The ability to record lessons with the built in screen recorder as part of EZWrite is one of the biggest game changers. Teachers can record a lesson as they teach it or pre-make lessons ready to distribute to students in a flipped model of learning. If we examine how technology truly supports and enhances more effective learning and teaching, having the ability for students to rewatch lessons (& free up teacher time for rich, open ended tasks) is a big win. The video recordings are saved locally and can be easily shared via Google Classroom, Seesaw or your own LMS.

DOES YOUR SCHOOL HAVE AN EDTECH VISION & PLAN?
This issue we wanted to discuss and explore the concept of having an edtech vision and plan for your school. I know when I was first in the role of ICT/DT, with one day per week allocated, it was just a matter of going term to term and week to week!
Whether you are implementing a new 1:1 program or more broadly raising the profile of all things digital in your school, having a vision and plan is going to be a crucial element to your success. Attributed to a few different people (Benjamin Franklin & Winston Churchill included) is the saying:
"Failing to plan is planning to fail"
As this is such a big topic, we bring you insights from three experienced educational leaders in Australian and New Zealand to share their perspectives on creating an edtech vision and plan.
In a recent episode of The Edtech Chat Podcast, host and educator Craig Kemp explores this very topic of having an edtech vision and plan. Craig outlines some key considerations that are well worth jotting down as you embark on refining your own school's plan of attack.
1. A big mistake is not to include edtech into the school strategic plan or housing it somewhere different to a schoolwide plan.
2. What is your elevator pitch (30 sec overview) for your school's edtech strategy? How would you explain it to a visitor, parent or new staff member? If you and your staff can't answer this (with a similar answer!) then it provides a good starting point for a roundtable discussion with the leadership team.
3. Get early wins! Highlight existing hotspots within your school as well as share timesaving tools to get teachers on board.
4. What is your why? As Simon Sineck puts it, "people don't buy what you do but why you do it". In creating your school's edtech vision and plan, ensure you crytalise why tech is being used in your school. Last issue we wrote about the importance of teachers understanding the 'why' and what exactly that could be.
5. Teacher professional learning must be prioritised.

As someone who is responsible for leading schools forward with the use of technology, it is important to have a vision and a plan on how to achieve your goals. Over the years in the education sector, I have seen lots of innovations and pockets of amazing teaching practice, but without a path clearly laid out, overall progress on the digital transformation journey for schools can be complex and slow.
So why do we need technology in our education environments? We know the world in which we live is changing. Digital technologies play a critical role in developing our students to become innovative creators of digital solutions, effective users of digital systems and critical consumers of information conveyed by digital systems. The Australian Government has recognised this need to embrace technology and has responded in various ways, such as implementing the Digital Technologies curriculum. Furthermore the Alice Springs (Mparntwe) Education Declaration (2019) clearly states that “successful lifelong learners who are productive and informed users of technology as a vehicle for information gathering and sharing, and are able to adapt to emerging technologies into the future” (p. 7). But how can we as leaders help navigate this space? How can we start to improve our learning and teaching for all of our students preparing them for our ever changing world?
It all starts with a clearly articulated vision. To start creating a vision, you need to think about your values and beliefs - this is what should drive all leadership decisions. A vision is a destination where we focus our efforts.
Some example include:
Disney: To Make People Happy
Microsoft: Empower people through great software anytime, anyplace, and on any device.
Google: to provide access to the world’s information in one click.
For educators to be truly inspired, the vision needs to be big. It needs to be something that seems challenging, so that it will encourage your school community to draw on their best skills and knowledge to be able to achieve it. Think big picture, anything is possible, blue sky thinking!
An example of a vision in the Lismore Diocese is “Empowering learners to be ethical, discerning creators of digital content and competent, flexible users of technology.” This was co constructed with the relevant networks.
You may find the following questions useful when thinking about the direction of your school:
What is our culture of learning driven by? Curiosity, creation, assessment, building skills, whole child or something else?
What culture around technology do we want to develop?
How can we engage our students in realistic examples, immersive experiences and activities that make an impact on their communities?
How can students engage in critical thinking through independent learning and discovery, including problem solving, interpretation and analysis?
How can technology support students’ interests and provide equitable access to learning materials?
How can we encourage teachers to allow students to create products that show what they know or think and share them with others?
How can we encourage teachers to create content that offers inclusive design and a variety of formats?
How can we encourage teachers to foster learning opportunities for their students and themselves?
Once you have clearly defined your vision, you need to think about how you are going to achieve it. A useful way to think of this is to use the following structure: “We’re doing X(what), for Y(who), because Z(why)”. This will be the start of your strategy. Remember through the process it is important to get feedback from your teacher, student and parent communities. Strategies work best when everyone feels invested and has ownership over the progress and the end product.
So what next? Often it is useful to think of the strategy as covering three distinct areas of:
Learning (student learning)
Teaching (professional learning and instructional design)
Environment (learning spaces and infrastructure)
I believe all of these three things need to work together in order to achieve the goals. We cannot provide personalisation of work, critical thinking and real-world engagement opportunities without teachers who could integrate technologies and an environment that supported connectivity.
We are just at the start of our journey to improve how schools and teachers offer an innovative digital experience to all learners. What is important to acknowledge is that there is no 'end' point. As fast as technology is changing and creating opportunities, we want to be harnessing this in our classrooms, whether face to face or online. Your vision does not have to be 'fixed', it can be revisited and adapted as your journey and contexts change.

How to lead with digital technologies
PLANNING FOR EDTECH SUCCESS
Tech in Edu Magazine sat down with the ever innovative Dean Pearman (Head of Digital Learning and Practice, Wesley College) and asked him about creating an edtech vision or plan for your school.
Planning an edtech vision for your school...
Dean is adamant that schools can get it wrong if they focus on a stand alone edtech vision without marrying it to the overall learning and teaching goals. The more important question he believes you should be asking is 'how can you leverage technology to enable your school’s vision for learning?'.
A second crucial element according to Dean is to not start any planning focusing on edtech without speaking to your people. “Find out what the status quo is, understand where staff are at on their edtech journey and importantly discover their 'pain points'. Once you do this the plan will start to become evident”.
Strategies for getting those ‘reluctant’ members of staff on board...
Dean’s number one piece of advice for school leaders to ensure maximum buy in is to empower the right people initially. Carefully select your influencers and, once empowered, they will be able to share the load of adoption strategy and support you in shifting the critical mass.
Another strategy to support buy in from even the most reluctant of teachers is to understand their pain points, use story and shared experiences. As a coach or leader in a school, sharing your own experiences that mirror or are relatable to an individual’s own journey can be a powerful tool for change management.
Common mistakes we can avoid in planning for edtech change management or planning…
Top of the list of mistakes to be avoided in Dean’s experience is focusing too much energy on the actual technology itself. The focus should primarily be on the teachers, students, learning and teaching. The technology must always be seen as a tool to enable and work towards learning and teaching goals.
Another common mistake to avoid is rapid deployment that is not wrapped in carefully planned coaching and professional learning.
The final mistake to avoid (one that those of us who are passionate about technology can often fall into making) is to expect every teacher to move at the same pace. We must acknowledge that everyone is on their own journey and that what is seen as a small step for one teacher is an enormous step for another. Make sure that your plan and vision allows for this diversity.
In the search for ways to engage students online, HyperDocs provide a way of facilitating independent learning while giving a structure to help them navigate new ideas. Jennifer Gonzalez explained the beauty of Hyperdocs in her ‘Cult of Pedagogy’ blog post “How HyperDocs Can Transform Your Teaching.” and explains, that although the term HyperDocs was coined by Lisa Highfill, Kelly Hilton, and Sarah Landis, their work is one iteration of a series of ways educators have strived for more student agency in the classroom.
Currently, with more teachers and students working on online platforms and with the added challenge of distance learning, HyperDocs are an opportunity to, as Jennifer Gonzalez said, “transform your teaching.”
The first place to start is Hyperdocs.co. This site has a whole range of resources, templates and samples for you to use, for free. There is the option for a yearly or monthly fee to get professional development content, however, starting with the free content is more than enough to get you going.
Models of Learning
One of the clear advantages of using HyperDocs as a teaching tool is that you can choose the structure model that suits you, your students and the context that you teach in. Whether it’s SAMR, 5 Es or a Playlist model, HyperDocs can be adapted to suit your needs.
What has Worked For Me
Particularly through this period of distance teaching and learning, intense experience and student feedback has led me to a few things that have worked well.
Personalisation - Insert a mix of resources from external sources with videos and other multimedia that you have created. Students invest more when they can see your investment in their learning. I use Bitmojis, my own videos for demonstration and audio/ visual instruction.
Task Weighting - In some cases (not all) it can be helpful to align tasks with a mark or weight scheme so that students can prioritise their time. This weighting I found particularly helpful for Mathematics HyperDocs where students had to demonstrate their understanding as well as their reasoning.
GoogleApps Mash-Up - Having a variety of activities for students to engage with can help you to accommodate for the varied learning styles in the class. eg. Embedding Google Drawings, YouTube, Links to shared Google Docs and Forms. Hyperdocs aren’t limited to Google Docs either. Google Slides and Drawings are commonly used to package learning for students.

It is important to incorporate a variety of tasks that help to change the chemicals in the brain and improve their overall focus and attention. Students need to have both movement and mindfulness incorporated in their day to help them stay balanced and their emotional state regulated. Taking 2 – 5 minutes out of the day can really help to build and nurture the well-being of students. I’ve used GoNoodle with all primary aged student and they absolutely LOVE IT!
If you’re new to GoNoodle, my favourite channels to use are:
Brainercise (This helps to activate both sides of the brain for optimal brain function)
Awesome Sauce! (Promotes fun movement)
Flow - Mindfulness activities. This is helpful when you want to help students to develop resilience, self-regulation and self-management skills.

Koo-Koo Kangaroo – Dancing and singing along to ridiculous songs
The best part about GoNoodle is that it has an avatar for you to choose from. The more activities you do, the bigger it grows and the students enjoy helping you to evolve this character. Another little secret is that the students love to see you enjoying the activity as well! Don’t forget to participate too.
