I find myself reading and thinking about a tension. A tension that is appropriate and should be lived with, not resolved. A tension that exists in our Christian journey between the strong instruction we find often in the New Testament and the very grace that our Gospel is based upon. A tension between the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and His claim upon our very lives to live worthy of the Gospel. To live worthy of this grace we’ve received by faith in Jesus.
Consider just these passages from the New Testament:
Therefore, with your minds ready for action, be sober-minded and set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14As obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires of your former ignorance. 15But as the one who called you is holy, you also are to be holy in all your conduct; 16 for it is written, Be holy, because I am holy. 1 Peter 1:13-16 (CSBBible)
That same passage a little further reminds us that we were redeemed from our former way of life – with the precious blood of Christ!
In the same few sentences we are reminded to set our hope on grace that’s revealed when Jesus is revealed; and we are challenged to live as obedient children and to be holy as He is holy. There it is again, a tension between grace and obedience.
Grace says, you don’t deserve to be forgiven, to start again, to be God’s child or have any connection to a holy God. However, considering the sacrifice of Jesus upon the cross, where He paid our debt, God extends to us a gift. An unearned, undeserved gift. Everything about our relationship with God is based upon grace. And yet, we are to be obedient. Redeemed by grace through faith in Christ. But redeemed to a new way of life.
grace motivated obedience
Words From Pastor Al
pea ridge First Baptist Church
the core of our belief system is our utter dependence on the grace of god.
We have a Haiti Mission Trip planned for this summer the dates are July 28-Aug 3, 2018. We are collecting funds to build a house for a family in Mathias if you would like to help. We ask that you pray for our team and the people they will minister to when they are in Haiti. If you sponsor a child we can take a small package or letter to them during this trip, please have packages and or letters to the church before July 25th.
In Ephesians 2 it says it like this:
For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God's gift - 9 not from works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do. Ephesians 2:8-10 (CSBBible)
Again, an inseparable tension. Grace and works. Saved by a gift from God that is not at all connected to our goodness or works. A gift. But we are saved to a new way of life. We are saved to obedience. We are saved to live for Jesus, recognizing that in light of His gift, our way of life becomes motivated by the gift that redeemed us.
Those of us who call ourselves Christian, recognize that at the core of our belief system is our utter dependence on the grace of God. We are not His children because we deserve it, have earned or ever will earn it. It’s all based on God’s gift. But in light of His gift we are surrendering our very selves to a new way of life. We are seeking to become like Paul when he says the following in Philippians 1:
For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Philippians 1:21 (CSBBible)
So, grace does not mean we aren’t accountable and responsible for our way of life. We are saved by grace, and part of the results of this gospel that we have received is ongoing radical change in us. The calling into God’s kingdom works. The Spirit’s work in and through us, resulting in the passion and ability to be engaged in what matters to God. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Philippians 2:13 (NLT2)
I pray that we will increasingly become a grace filled people, who love like Jesus and extend grace like Jesus. And yet a people who are passionate about the good works He has prepared for us to be doing.

June was a great month for the student ministry! We started our student ministry journals. We started family groups. We helped out with VBS. And lastly, we went to student summer camp.
I am excited to say that God is doing great things not only in the student ministry corporately, but in the students individually. It is even great to see God be moving in the lives of the leaders.
Coming off of Super Summer (our church camp), it is easy to fall back into the routine and temptations of the world. I’ve always noticed the students getting the “church camp high” while at camp, only to lose that fire when returning home. Let us continue to pray for them and disciple them! At camp, we saw the Lord call two to Himself in the gift of salvation and two calls to ministry!
Attached you will find some photos from Super Summer as well as the calendars for both July and August. If you have not signed up for text announcements for the student ministry, follow the instructions on the graphic attached. Thank you all for your continued support and partnership all for the goal of God’s glory!
