how to start a relationship with God
a battle worth fighting
We are fearfully and wonderfully made
By Rebekah Perryman
From the moment we are born, we enter a battlefield. Our minds are instantly invaded by influencers--both good and bad. They shape us, make us, build us up and tear us down.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. So you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will. -Romans 12:2
We are called to renew our minds or Transform our thinking. Meaning, at one time our minds were new. Pure. Untouched. But the world creeped in. Creating webs of lies that we begin to believe as truths. Webs that leave us with insecurities.
It’s a daily battle to fight off the lies that intrude our thoughts, but we are not called to think poorly of ourselves. Our Father tells us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, that there is no flaw in us.
The thing is, we know these truths. We know what the Bible says, but it difficult to believe it applies to our lives. It’s easy to give it out as good advice. As a line to build up our friends, but we don’t give it much credit when it comes to our journey.
We are called to Transform our Thinking
HOW TO RENEW YOUR MIND
store it in your heart
Knowing, believing and living.
My story has led to me to see these words as stepping stones. One leading to the other. You can know stuff all day long, but it doesn’t mean you believe it. And believing doesn’t equate to living it out. This is where renewing your mind gets serious because this can work both ways.
You can positively influence your mind by filling it with God’s truth. Or you can allow the world to creep in and take over your thinking to a point where you begin to know, believe and live out the lies it throws your way.
Renewing your mind, transforming your thinking. This takes time, discipline and diligence. It’s not easy, it’s a battlefield, but it is a battle worth fighting every time.
The best way to renew your mind is through memorizing scripture. Scripture is God’s truth and it applies to every one of His children. Hiding scripture in our hearts is the best weapon for fighting the battle in our mind.
Memorizing can be challenging, but it is not impossible. Take it a day at time. Start simple. Use a verse you are familiar with. Write it down. Write it down again. Post it on your mirror, computer, steering wheel. Say it in the shower or while you are driving.
I promise that eventually you will know that verse as well as your favorite song. Once it’s stored in your heart, you will begin to believe it to be truth and use it to fight your personal brain battle. When you start to see those truths that you now believe turn into actions, you’re living it out.
What’s your battle? What is the lie the world has sown in your head? Do you really want to believe it for the rest of your life? I promise, if you let God in and allow him to transform your thinking, you’ll be able to fight through those battles with confidence in who God created your to be!
A BATTLE WORTH
how to HAVE A QUIET TIME
Years ago, when faith became really important to me, I was totally freaked out by two things:
What is a quiet time?
Why should I have one?
Okay, okay...question 2 was really: Awww, do I have to? Having a quiet time sounded like another boring rule I'd just break and feel guilty about later, another reason I wasn't a good enough Christian.
But I was wrong.
A "quiet time" is simply time spent quietly with God. Psalm 46:10 tells us to "Be still, and know that I am God!" The reason to have a quiet time is to connect on a deeper level with God, or grow spiritually, to help accomplish your God-given purpose while on earth.
We don't have to rely on our own strength to grow spiritually. For example: a grape growing on a vine doesn't have to pressure itself to get bigger, it just gets bigger when it clings to the life-giving vine:
Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5
We rely on God, the vine, to grow spiritual fruit:
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Galatians 5:22-23
Love, joy, peace, patience, etc. are side effects of clinging to the vine. There's no pressure or reason to scream at yourself "HAVE MORE PATIENCE! LOVE MORE PEOPLE!" No, just connect to the vine, and the fruit will come. Having a quiet time is one way to do that.
This is what a typical quiet time looks like for me:
Wake up at 6 in the morning (only because I'm a morning person)
Make a homemade coconut latte
Complete my weekly lesson from Bible Study Fellowship (an international Bible Study I've been involved for years. Check it out, you're invited too!)
Write what I feel like God is telling me through the Bible verses I read through my lesson
Pray...moments later my kids wake up and the chaos of the day begins.
Sometimes my coffee runs out and I drink tea. Sometimes I can't find a pen and I use a crayon. Sometimes I can't find my journal and I write on an old receipt. Sometimes I can't find my BSF lesson and I look up some random verses on my Bible app. Sometimes I miss a few days altogether.
There is no perfect quiet time. But the following tips--while not 100% necessary--help me focus and connect deeper with God:
3 Quiet Time Ingredients
Place. Finding a place you can think allows for your time with God to go deeper. For example, if I really want to spend time with my friend, Amy, I meet somewhere like a coffee shop or my house so I can really listen. I can spend time with her at a concert, but I might not be able to listen as well.
Time. Trying to have a quiet time at the same time is helpful, but don't beat yourself up if you get off rhythm (like I do sometimes!). And don't sweat it if you're not a morning person. It doesn't matter the exact time, but spending time with God daily helps keep your relationship strong. The more time I spend connected to the vine, the more fruit naturally grows from my relationship with God.
Materials. God speaks to us through prayer, reading the Bible, and other believers. It helps to have resources to teach us more about how this flow of communication works and jumpstart our conversation with God. Grab a journal, a pen, and check out the following resources:
Bible App: Bible Gateway is our favorite. Try reading the "NLT" translation of the Bible and choose from many devotions & reading plans.
Bookstore: Most of the devotions, etc in our bookstore are free. Written by Katie, our Director, & the Lane of Roses Ambassadors.
Devotional App: Proverbs 31 has a great one...and it's free! You can connect with thousands of other women online and through the app as well.
Bible Studies with Other Women: BSF is the one I've been involved with for years, check it out & join a local chapter or see some of the other places to connect!
Spending time with God through the Bible and praying is transformational, but only if you are willing to do it. So don't sweat it! Be present, be still, and don't worry if you don't have the perfect place, time, or materials.
The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant. They’re full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God. Don’t fall for that nonsense. This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. Read the rest of Matthew 6...
A relationship with God is personal. Yours will look a little different than mine. But for your relationship with God to grow, you must get to know Him better.
There are so many ways to have a quiet time! Sometimes I do yoga & meditate on verses, sometimes I paint, but here are some of the tips that help me the most.
1. Read the Bible.
2. Pray for the Holy Spirit to reveal what it says.
3 EASY STEPS TO READING THE BIBLE
Your word is a lamp to guide my feet
and a light for my path.
how to read your bible
Download a Free Bible App or Buy a Bible. Biblegateway is my favorite app because it offers many translations--if I don't understand what a verse means in one translation, I can check several others instantly. Plus, they have tons of reading plans organized by topic. Download the Biblegateway App.
Find the Right Translation for you. I like the New Living Translation because I think it's easier to understand than some of the others. It's translated "thought to thought" and not necessarily word by word. Other popular choices include the New International Version and The Message.
Consider the Context. The Bible is one congruent Love Story. God made the world to reflect His glory and people experienced a perfect relationship with Him. People chose to walk away from God, sin created a barrier in the relationship with him, and God explains in Genesis His plan to bring humanity back to Him through Jesus Christ. Revelations explains the plan that will make all things right once and for all. It's important to read verses in the context of chapters, chapters in the context of books, and the books of the Bible in context of the one congruent Love Story.
Start with the Book of John. The main point of the Christian faith is establishing a relationship with Jesus Christ. The Book of John explains the claims Jesus made about Himself and is a good place to start. Read John here...
Join a Bible Study. Studying alongside others helps you learn. I study the Bible through Bible Study Fellowship (click the link to find out more), but there are so many awesome ministries all over the world.
how to pray
I always thought prayer was a little intimidating, and spending time with God overwhelmed me. However, I've learned that sometimes you might just shoot up random prayers to God throughout the day, kind of like taking sips from a water bottle you take everywhere you go. Other times you will want to spend deeper time with God, like when you meet a friend for a coffee date. When you meet a friend for coffee you get to really connect; it's refreshing, and you really get to know the person better.
Years ago, I was totally freaked out by having the perfect quiet time and praying the "right" way. Was a quick prayer now and then enough? Was it terrible that I hate sitting still for more than 10 minutes? I was so worried about the formula about what I was doing, sometimes I just wouldn't do anything at all. Occasionally, I still worry about whether I'm having a quiet time and praying the "right" way but these little tips help me:
1. Find a place you can concentrate when you are aiming for a deeper time with God. For some, this means alone in a room; for others, like myself, a crowded Starbucks is better. Whatever works with your personality. Trying to have a quiet time at the same time is helpful, but don't beat yourself up if you get off rhythm (like I do sometimes!). Besides, praying at all times is a good habit and can be done anytime, anywhere. I pray the most in my Pure Barre classes!!
2. If I'm having trouble praying, I follow the formula I learned at Southland that is based on the Lord's Prayer.*
Father, thank you...
Father, help me...
Father, use me...
3. Look up a couple verses on a Bible App . or read through the devotions in this website and try to memorize some of the verses. The bible is literally God's word and makes prayer come alive. So many times I've felt like God said a particular verse just for my ears. Memorizing verses is a great way to allow more opportunities to hear God's voice in a personal way.
4. If you are craving more structure, some other devotional authors include...
Beth Moore, author/speaker, is super popular and her books tend to be really helpful.
Sarah Young, counselor/missionary, is great at focusing on seeing yourself as loved because that is how God sees you. I am reading her book of devotions now and love it.
5. Don't sweat it!!! Reading the bible and praying is transformational, but only if you are willing to do it.
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. (Psalm 119:11 NIV)
*The Lord's Prayer-
Pray like this:
Our Father in heaven,
may your name be kept holy.
May your Kingdom come soon.
May your will be done on earth,
as it is in heaven.
Give us today the food we need,
and forgive us our sins,
as we have forgiven those who sin against us.
And don't let us yield to temptation,
but rescue us from the evil one.
(Matthew 6:9-13 NLT)
I know your truths. You call me beautiful. You claim there is not one flaw in me. I know it, but I’m having a hard time believing it today. Help me to believe it. Guide my mind to see what you see when I look in the mirror. Give me a Godly perception towards my body. A Godly view towards health. Block out the world’s lies about how I should look, the things I should eat and the way I should exercise. Help me to see your perspective on health.
God, You say my body is a temple. Holy Spirit, remind me to treat it as such. Give me the desire to pursue Godly choices when it comes to my overall health. Lord, I don’t know all the answers, and my mind is often entranced by what the world says, but you know the answers; the truths. Place those truths in my mind and guide me towards Godly health.
Things did get worse for a while...
DISCOVERING MY PURPOSE
One of the hardest parts of being 20-ish is the overwhelming pressure to figure out what you are supposed to do and be for the rest of your life. I was a wreck after college graduation.
I felt like the biggest loser in the history of the planet when I moved back in with my parents after a series of comically horrible interviews. Since I had no idea how long I would be home, I had outrageous insomnia and a forehead full of zits.
But--wait!--I finally saw light at the end of the tunnel. In July, I landed a dream job with tons of potential...selling pens door-to-door. It sucked. To top off a super-fun pen-selling summer, my grandma died in August. I went to her funeral visitation on my 23rd birthday.
Could it get any worse?
Unfortunately, yes. Things did get worse for me for a season (much worse, actually) but I learned some valuable lessons about defining my purpose and living out the plan God marked out for me.
I was a wreck after college graduation
Continued on next page...
2 STEPS TO KNOWING YOUR PURPOSE
1. Define Your Purpose. The Bible describes humankind as being created to bring God glory, but each human brings glory to God through unique gifts. We all have the same ultimate purpose, but our specific purposes (or the ways we use our gifts) are different.
Ultimate Purpose. The ultimate reason you were created? To bring God glory, to make Him famous, to adore Him. That's your God-given purpose and the reason He made you:
Bring all who claim me as their God, for I have made them for my glory. It was I who created them. - Isaiah 43:7
Specific Purpose. God created you in His image to glorify Him with all the special talents He gave you before you were even born. You honor God when you use your gifts out of love for Him. You might be a teacher, a doctor, a bus driver, a writer, a mom, a garbage collector...your occupation can be a platform to use other gifts you have like encouraging others, helping others, leading others:
In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well.- Romans 12:6
God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.- 1 Peter 4:10-11
2. Discover Your Plan. Figure out your gifts, and use them to bring glory to God.
For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope." - Jeremiah 29:11
Learn your specific gifts through trial and error. I was not meant to sell pens forever, but it taught me a thing or two. Try new things. You will hate some things, love others.
Remember what you loved as a kid. As a kid, I loved writing stories and performing commercials for hours on end in the mirror. Now, I write and give speeches as the Director of Development at Lane of Roses.
Take a personality test. Sometimes what's obvious about our personalities is hard to determine up close. Google "Strengthsfinders" and "Meijers-Briggs" for some good personality tests.
Appreciate your past and imperfections...they might be what sets you a part and fuel your passion. Julius Caesar and James Earl Jones worked hard to overcome speech impediments and later became famous for their voices. My unpleasant years between 18-23 fuel my passion for encouraging women through Lane of Roses.
My purpose is to bring God glory (honor Him and love Him back for loving me) through using the unique gifts He gave me. Our ultimate purpose of bringing God glory is the same, but the specific way our gifts are expressed will look different. Discover your plan by figuring out what brings you joy. God loves you, and when you celebrate the gifts He gave you, it gives Him joy too.
Don't be too hard on yourself if you have to try a few careers (pens, anyone?) before you find the perfect fit. Strive for excellence, not perfection. Remember, 1 Peter 4:8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you.
