OKLAHOMA TENNIS FOUNDATION STATUE DEDICATION UNVEILED
One of Oklahoma’s premier tennis facilities is partnering with the Rankin YMCA and the Play It Forward Tennis Foundation to offer a special experience for athletes with disabilities called the Champions Program. The Play It Forward Tennis Foundation is an outreach foundation that celebrates the idea that anyone from anywhere should be able to play and complete. Their focus is diversity and inclusion reach out to those with special needs and those that might not have the means to afford tennis instruction. Advertisement Beginning earlier this spring and continuing until the end of May, the Champions Program meets each Saturday for eight weeks, with sessions held for players under 18, and another for adults. USPTA certified coaches and volunteers work with each player to make any necessary modifications to ensure a successful experience. Two courts are used for teaching tennis skills with another court for fitness and agility. A fourth court exists for coordination activities such as throwing, catching and footwork. Rankin YMCA approached Play It Forward about the possibility of hosting the adaptive program as a way to build upon the activities they already offered for basketball and baseball. It was an opportunity the facility never thought twice about “The Champions programs is one of the most rewarding programs we put on within Play it Forward,” said David Minihan, Director of Tennis at Edmond Center Court. “There is nothing better than the joy our athletes bring all of us as coaches and volunteers.” Nearly two dozen athletes are currently part of the Champions Program, with more than half being youth players. The final week of the program will introduce competition with a Team Challenge to celebrate all the athletes and everything they have learned in the program. After the 8-week program, there are plans to continue this excellent opportunity. Please go to www.playitforwardtennisedmond.com to learn more about this program and more.

Coach Francis Baxter Statue Unveiled
"what a huge impact this man made to so many around this entire state and beyond."
A titan of Oklahoma tennis is now a permanent part of the new Edmond Center Court tennis facility. A statue honoring former University of Central Oklahoma tennis coach Francis Baxter was dedicated during a special event on May 2, 2021. Sponsored by The Oklahoma Tennis Foundation (OKTF), the event featured former players and associates impacted by the guidance and friendship of Coach Baxter and his wife, Jean. OKTF President Stan Swyden presided over the unveiling and spoke of Baxter’s incredible career, which includes 36 year of collegiate coaching and induction into the Oklahoma Tennis Hall of Fame. The Executive Director of OKTF, Carmen Bond, said “what a huge impact this man made to so many around this entire state and beyond. He spoke today with the humble wit and wisdom so many of us cherish.” The statue, titled “The Father of Oklahoma Tennis”, can be seen at the Edmond Center Court facility, located at 601 W. 15th Street in Edmond, OK. Also included in the day was a tour of the Edmond Center Court facility. The day also centered around the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAAA) Conference Tennis Championships taking place at the facility. On the men's side, Northwest Missouri State took the conference crown, while Central Oklahoma captured its second-straight conference title.
"Tennis is a sport that you can play for a lifetime. It taught me a lot about competition and relationships growing up. It allowed me to go to a private university and meet girls on my team from all over the world. It has connected me with others in business opportunities after living in four different states as a journalist. Now I play it for fun which is icing on the cake. I think it is the greatest sport ever." - Lindsay Myer started playing when she was 11
"I started playing tennis because my next door neighbor had played her whole life and she convinced my sister and I. We started off with a 1 hour drill one day a week and were soon hooked." - Shelley Bradshaw started when she was 42.
We asked these women, WHY TENNIS?
Letter from Kye
Recently this year, I was introduced to fitness in tennis. Being a former football player and all-around athlete in high school, I was never familiar with the game of tennis or the fitness aspect of it either. Being a personal trainer around the tennis community at the Greens Country Club Racquet Center, I have become a fan of the game almost overnight. About 3 months ago, I decided it was time to get on a court and play! I thought by being an athlete I would quickly adapt to the game and learn it with ease, man was I wrong! To see the overall preparation the attitude you have to have for the game as well as learning the proper techniques is very respectable In football, you have to depend on other people to get the job done, intent is it all falls on your shoulders, you have to prepare to go to war, and for tennis that mindset is almost the same. I have noticed that you have to have a strong mindset in order to compete at a high-level. In the process of sharpening your mental strength as well as physical, I believe it is important to implement core, flexibility, stability, and learning proper breathing for both young and old athletes alike. I’ve also come to understand that you must have a calm mind in the mist of chaos (meaning during the exercise or the game) all the while not letting the situation you’re going through while exercising or competing take you off of your game! I believe that with all my experience with overcoming large obstacles in college and in life in general has led me to this moment in time to change people’s lives with fitness along with approaching exercising and athletic performing with the right mentality in order to be successful. I am very excited to help better people’s lives both physically and mentally in the process. Exercising is not just for the body, but truly for the mind and spirit as well. There is a reason for everything, and I am so excited to continue to find my reason, here at the Greens Country Club Racquet Center. Peace and Blessings, Kye Staley
"I don't like going to the gym and working out so tennis gives me the competitive factor while getting a good workout in." - Gina Harris started playing when she was 35

OKCTC UPDATE
OKLAHOMA CITY TENNIS CENTER
The Oklahoma City Tennis Center was built in 1969 and has continually made impactful updates to the facility. In 2020, a new 2.1-million-dollar pro shop was added. The new pro shop connects to the indoor tennis building providing viewing into the indoor courts, restrooms, offices, and a new and larger pro shop. The Tennis Center is part of the Oklahoma City Public Parks and Recreation Division. Hosting over 60 tournaments, leagues, lessons, drills, Cardio tennis and much more it is exciting to see this extraordinary add on to the award-winning public facility.
2.1 MILLION FACILITY UPDATE
Q & A with Facility Director at Oklahoma Tennis Center, Steve Henry
Is the new facility open? Yes When did it open? March 15, 2021 Is it fully complete or are there additional phases to be added? Mostly completed. We will be increasing the size of our viewing area to our indoor courts in a few weeks by removing a unused office space. Is it open to the public? Yes! as always. What is included in the new facility? How big, how many courts, etc This project was only an indoor pro shop. This includes, a viewing area into the indoor courts, offices, a new retail space, and an outdoor back patio area overlooking courts 3 and 4. Approximately 7,000 sq. ft. What are a few of your favorite things about the new place? The viewing space into the indoor court, and the back patio area. These are two really nice spaces. What will you be using the old clubhouse for? This will be a shared space. During the week this will be a learning center for our NJTL, First Serve. On weekends of some of our major outdoor tournaments this will be a players lounge area. What are some big events that will be happening at your facility? We will be hosted the Boys and Girls High School State Championships in May, a junior L3 MV event for all age groups in June and in October we have 3 consecutive weekends of USTA Adult League Championships.

Kanchanakomtorn & Coaches Pat ritchie and Whitney Ritchie
When did you start playing tennis? I started playing tennis with coach Jenny Marcos when I was four-years-old. Who is your coach? TK: My coaches are coach Whitney Ritchie, coach Tim Ritchie and coach Chris Haworth. Where do you train? I train at OKC Tennis Center. Where do you go to school? I am homeschooled with Epic Charter School. What is your favorite thing about tennis? Traveling for tournaments and making fun memories with family, coaches and friends. Favorite food? Thai food, pizza and steak Favorite tennis player? Roger Federer Pre-Match Ritual? I like watching good matches before I play because it gives me ideas and puts me in the zone. What is your favorite thing about playing tournaments? I like playing in tournaments because I get to play different players. What is your ranking? Currently, I am No. 1 in the nation for Boys' 12s singles and doubles. What are some of your biggest tennis accomplishments? Winning my first L1 and L2 this year, which led me to become No. 1 in the nation. Also winning the doubles in the 2021 Easter Bowl and got my first Gold ball. What are your tennis plans for this summer (and for the rest of the year)? I'll be training for a week at the National Tennis Camp in Orlando, then come back to train at OKCTC tennis camp. I will also play many tournaments. Do you prefer singles or doubles? I prefer singles because it is more dependent on myself but doubles is really fun also. Have you ever played Junior Team Tennis (JTT) I joined a couple of times when I was 8 or 9-years-old. It was really fun because my friends joined the team. I heard you won a L1 National Tournament. Tell me more about that. It was my first L1 so I was excited to play. All the kids there were really good. It was pretty cool in the semis because it was my first time having a chair umpire. My coaches helped me focus and stay calm. I played really well throughout the whole tournament. It was a great experience and I had lots of fun. I'd like to thank my family and my coaches who believe in me and make me better every day.

TIPS FOR STAYING COOL
MATCH PLAY TIPS
Tips for Staying Cool During your Tennis Match this Summer
HYDRATE THE DAY BEFORE Hot days drain water and sodium from your body. Drink water and electrolytes the day before and refrain from alchohol and caffeine. Don't be afraid to add more salt to your diet a few hours before your match. PACK A COOLER AND PLENTY TO DRINK Matches can last hours. Take advantage of the time between the switch overs. For longer matches, be prepared to have drinks that include electrolytes and snacks that nclude carbohydrates. Include ice packs to place on your neck to cool down between matches and even include cold towels to place around your neck and wrists. FIND SHADE Find shade by wearing a hat or bringing an umbrella for breaks in between games. If you are feeling over heated, don't be afraid to dip your hat in the water cooler you brought. Stay out of the sun when possible. If you are watching a match before you play, make sure you are sitting in the shade. WEAR BREATHABLE GEAR Stay away from heavy cotton clothing on the courts. Try wearing light colored, breathable, and light clothing to keep you cool. QUALITY SHOES Tennis courts trap heat so it is important to wear quality shoes to keep the bottom or your feet cool. BE PHYSICALLY FIT The better shape you are in, the better you will handle the heat! Get acclimated to the heat. Practice several times in hot weather before you go and compete in the heat. POSSIBLY CHANGE YOUR TENNIS STRATEGY If you like to flood the net every point, or have killer ground strokes you might need to modify these quick extreme movements for the heat. Pace yourself in long matches and save your power plays for more important points. KNOW YOUR LIMITS Don't be afraid to take a break. No tennis match is worth harming yourself. Listen to your body, and find ways to take a break.

OKLAHOMA SENIORS HEADED FOR COLLEGE TENNIS
I started playing tennis when I was three but started playing tournaments when I was around eight years old in red ball. I am going to be playing college tennis at Northeastern State University (NSU) in Tahlequah, OK. I played High School tennis for Bishop Kelley High School and was lucky enough to bring home two state titles in the three seasons we had! My favorite tennis memory would have to be the first time I made it to Junior Team Tennis Nationals with my team back in 2016. That year nationals was held in South Carolina and having been our first time ever making it to nationals, we were all very surprised when we ended up winning 4th place overall. My tennis coach is Coach Georgi Cravero at RH91. This might not be the best answer but I do not have a certain "pre-match ritual." I usually have a few bars and try to watch the match of my next opponent and try to form a game plan. My favorite female tennis pro would have to be Garbiñe Muguruza. My favorite food is a tie between pasta and sushi. I use the Wilson Ultra.

I attended Oologah High School and competed on the varsity tennis team in the #1 singles position. My favorite tennis memory would be this year's high school regionals. This was the first year the majority of my high school team competed in tennis. It was very fun for me to watch them compete and give it their best effort! My tennis coach is Cristian Pensavalle. Despite them not being my main tennis coaches, my tennis career was also greatly influenced by the efforts of Chris Milliron, Cliff Marsland, Phil Holland, and Shane Doyle. I’ve been playing tennis for around 6 year I will be playing at southwestern college in Winfield, Kansas I played at Broken Arrow High School. My favorite tennis memory was my sophomore year of high school at state. I was playing two doubles with Cole Huebert. We were playing for third place. This was my first real taste of big crowds. It was dark outside when we started playing. There was a lot of yelling and cheering, and we managed to pull out the win in the third set. My high school coach is Scott Milner, and I also go to Vince Westbrook tennis academy where I take lessons from Christian Pensavalle. I don’t really have a pregame ritual, but I have a journal where I write down a match after I’ve played it. I write down the score, what I did well, what I did not so well, and how I felt about the match over all. This helps a lot for the next match that I play. At the moment, my favorite tennis player would be Nadal. My favorite food is any type of fish taco. Fish on its own is okay, but when you put it in a flour tortilla with lettuce and cheese and dressing it’s 10 times better. The racquet that I use is the Yonnex VCore 100.
I've been playing tennis for 12 years. I'm signed to play tennis at the University of Oklahoma. I was homeschooled and trained at Tucker Tennis Academy. My favorite memory is winning a bronze ball at Winter Nationals. My tennis coach is Tomas Stillman. I do a dynamic warmup to stay loose and I like listening to music. The Oklahoma high school girls tennis state championships wrapped up Saturday at Oklahoma City Tennis Center. Here's what happened: Heritage Hall’s Brooke Thompson caps undefeated season with state title Brooke Thompson left no doubt. The senior at Heritage Hall powered a strong forehand past Tulsa Cascia Hall’s Houston Jennings, and her celebration began. She jumped into coach Jenny Ferguson's arms. She yelled at the fans. Thompson had won the Class 5A No. 1 singles title for the second time and capped her second undefeated season at Heritage Hall on Saturday at Oklahoma City Tennis Center. Or so she thought. Jennings disputed the final score, saying she was under the impression the point was a deuce. Thompson was playing the point as if it was for the match. After a 5-minute discussion with the official, Thompson and Jennings went back to play the final points. With Thompson serving, she dominated. Two more strong forehands and a few screams later, she was officially a champion. "It was a great feeling," Thompson said. "I was a little nervous at first because it was kind of close, but I finished it off." Jennings led 4-2 in the second set, but Thompson won four straight games to clinch the first set. In the second, Jennings took a couple early but Thompson closed the door and dominated at the end. Thompson, a Baylor signee who also won the 5A No. 1 singles title and went 28-0 her freshman year, didn't play tennis at Heritage Hall the past two seasons. She was at Tulsa in a tennis academy. This year, she returned and again dominating, finishing 29-0 and winning another title. "Once I got her focused, she took care of business," Ferguson said. "Once she started playing the Brooke Thompson tennis she can play, that's when she elevated in that match." Thompson wasn't Heritage Hall's only winner. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Lily Plaster and Annabelle Treadwell fought back from a first-set loss to top Cascia Hall in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. Plaster and Treadwell were in control the entire third set, hitting strong forehands and serves and using a blustery wind to their advantage. Their finish helped the Chargers tie for second in Class 5A with Tulsa Metro Christian. "We were 3-0 against Cascia this season," Ferguson said. "It's hard to beat a team four times. After we lost the first set 6-1, we looked at the girls and told them, 'We're going to win this.' And they believed in themselves." Tulsa Cascia Hall won the team title. It was its ninth title in school history. Classen SAS duo falls in finals Aimee Pham and Sofia Acuna’s magical run came up just short of a championshipOklahoma high school girls tennis: Heritage Hall’s Brooke Thompson wraps up perfect season. The star singles players at Classen SAS both made it to the championship matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles Saturday, but neither were unable to cap their undefeated seasons. Acuna, a freshman, fell 6-1, 6-2 to Oologah’s Mikaela McSpadden at No. 1 singles in Class 4A. Pham, a senior, dropped her championship match at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1 against Tulsa Holland Hall’s Natalie Gillett. McSpadden and Gillett were the top-ranked players in their respective brackets. Acuna and Pham each finish the season at 17-1. In Class 4A, Tulsa Holland Hall won the team title and had individual victories at No. 2 singles and both doubles teams. It was Holland Hall's second title in school history. Edmond North’s Alise Hsu drops final at No. 1 singles Alice Hsu had a magical freshman season, but she came up just short of the ultimate goal. The Edmond North freshman battled Saturday, but couldn’t overcome Tulsa Kelley’s Kate Miley, who topped Hsu 6-4, 6-4. Miley took an early 4-0 advantage in the first set, but Hsu battled back, winning four of the next five games, but she was unable to win the set. The duo again went back in forth in the second set, but Miley pulled out the victory. Hsu finishes the season at 27-7. Tulsa Kelley also won championships at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles while finishing second at No. 1 doubles. The Comets clinched their second straight championship, their first in Class 6A, and ninth in school history. Edmond North finished third in Class 6A while Deer Creek tallied a fourth-place finish.
