FROM THE EDITORS
Why use Google Trends in your Classroom? If you teach Gr 3-6 Maths then this should be top of your list when you next cover data and graphing. What is Google Trends? Allows users to view search term popularity over time as simple line graphs. It gets better in the fact you can compare search terms against each other and see remarkable trends, patterns and of course this elicits lots of curious…”why does it spike there?”...”what makes it drop off there?”...”I wonder if a different country has the same pattern?” I guarantee students will be 500% more engaged in this maths lesson than graphing the favourite colours of their classmates (we’ve all done that lesson!). I introduced trends to a Gr ⅚ class recently while we were just had a spare 5 minutes. Well that that 5 minutes turned into a full lesson full of curious inquiry….just how we want our learners to be!

Comparing Roblox to Minecraft
It's been a quite 6 weeks in the G Suite world. Lots of updates but none that we thought would be of interest to teachers- mainly admin related stuff. Therefore, we decided to give you a bonus feature on an amazing Google tool: Trends (www.trends.google.com). Haven't heard of it? Well, you're not alone. Check it out and I'm sure you'll be opening a new tab to try it !
There is a new galah on the scene and it’s not flaming, but Tweeting! The Tweeting Galah & The Surfing Penguin are sensationally clever picture story books written to support primary schools to teach cyber safety. These two books are written by a West Australian educator, Kim Maslin, who has managed to weave contemporary digital issues into a series of short stories. What we love about the book? Each book is composed of 4 short stories, meaning you can pick and choose depending on your desired focus. Wide range of cyber safety issues addressed including sharing on social media, stranger danger, geolocation settings, online bullying, being a bystander, balancing screen time and trolling. The stories are written using rich language so that you can easily use them as part of your reading or writing focus for the week. Each short story has one or two very clear and concise ‘cyber safety’ focii. Each story concludes with a series of reflection questions to help guide class discussion. Fun and engaging AR app (free, just download for your class iPads) has a follow up activity or two for each story Accompanying AR selfie cards open the door to fun ... What age are they appropriate for? In our opinion, each short story has a slightly different target demographic. For example, the story of the Galah’s Close Encounter with the Creeping Kestrel focuses on apps that share geolocation data and how this can pose a danger. This topic would require students to be in Grade 3+. Whereas The Scary Plight of the Surfing Penguin is all about choosing age appropriate content, checking with an adult and having content filters. This story definitely lends itself to junior students in F-2. In summary, across the 8 short stories there is a raft of topics to cater for all primary school grade levels.

STUDENT REVIEW - Ruby Saulsman, Grade 2 We asked a Grade 2 student, Ruby to review the books and share the lessons she learnt: I give these books 5 stars - It was a really good book to help children learn about safety on iPads, phones and computers. I liked using Zapper (free AR app) to do the quizzes. My favourite two stories were: The Sensational Saga of the Bumbling Bilby The message is not to be mean and take photos or videos of other people and post them unless you have their permission. You should respect people and their feelings. The Curious Case of the Overly Playful Platypus The message is when you get a computer, ipad or phone don’t use it all the time because you could get distracted. You need to have small amounts of time on them. You should keep them away from you when sleeping so you are not tempted to use it.

Paired with the free ‘Sphero Edu’ app, the Bolt can be programmed via block coding (think Scratch) or through more advanced Javascript. The app also provides a platform for parents, kids and educators to share projects, activities and curriculum. The latest update to the Sphero Edu app ensures that young programmers can be even more creative and easily move on to more advanced projects when ready.
It’s now over 6 years since Sphero first burst into classrooms with their original Sphero 1.0 & 2.0. Since then they have also released the Mini, Ollie and SPRK+. If you are looking to expand your STEAM resources for 2020, check out their latest addition to the team, Sphero Bolt.

Verdict The new Bolt has significantly more features than any of its predecessors. Sphero have managed to create a product that is primarily a learning device that inspires students to explore new technologies and creative play. When paired with the Sphero Edu app, the Bolt truly becomes a worthy STEM learning tool. Each new feature and sensor is programmable through this app and the new LED matrix adds a complexity to the programming that I believe previous Sphero models have lacked. The Sphero Edu app encourages collaboration with other users around the globe and this community of educators is really an invaluable source of inspiration for teachers and students worldwide. My students absolutely love the Sphero Bolt and I constantly see their imaginations being sparked by the possibilities of this device. It’s simple, accessible and offers my students incentive to move through the three programming platforms in a fun, intuitive and rewarding way. We all know that play is a powerful teacher and this device manages to combine it with learning in a creative and compelling way.

Over the past 30 years my role as a teacher has taken on various forms and I’ve had to evolve and adapt to the ever changing curriculum. As a LOTE/Italian teacher and most recently EAL teacher, my main focus has been on oral language. If students have an extensive vocabulary they are able to use these words to interact with their peers by expressing their ideas and feelings. They learn to listen to and read texts with accuracy and fluency, leading to a greater appreciation of both languages. Check out my favourite tools for bringing oral language into the classroom. If l can use them...so can you! The first is Chatterpix, which I used with the year 1 and 2 students to reinforce their learning of colours. Chatterpix allows the student to take a photo of an object or illustration then add stickers, draws a line to create a mouth, records sentences, play it back in order to listen to it, and write short sentences. Students are able to instantly listen for correct pronunciation and intonation of Italian-specific sounds whilst having fun watching an object speak. Secondly, Puppet Pals was used to teach the language of greetings. Puppet Pals allows students to create 2 or more puppets by adding selected features and record a greeting conversation. Students can also add different voice overs by controlling the volume button and move the puppets around the screen. The Book Creator app was used with my small group of EAL students to reinforce their understanding and concept of time. Book Creator also allows the students to write short stories or sentences, draw/take pictures, format the look of the book and voice record. Playing back their voice recordings is beneficial when the focus is on developing oral language, sentence structure and pronunciation of words. For the older students in grades 3-6, Screencastify (a free Chrome extension) was introduced so students could record their Italian Profile. With Screencastify, the older students can record themselves reading, listening back for clarity and correct pronunciation and re-record. Screencastify recordings are saved as a video file directly into the student’s Google Drive. For the iOS apps (Chatterpix, Puppet Pals & Book Creator) student work can be saved directly to the photo gallery. For me and the students, these apps are concrete evidence of learning, assessment and feedback. The students’ work can also be uploaded onto SeeSaw where parents are instantly informed of their child’s progress. These apps tie in very well with the Listening and Speaking areas of the EAL and LOTE curriculum. By using the voice recording function, I can hear their pronunciation, intonation, use of correct tense, clarity, expression, and how they converse with their peers in groups and class discussions. They can be used at the introduction of a topic or at the end to reinforce students’ learning. Students are having fun using these apps without realising that they are learning another language. Apps: Chatterpix (free) Puppet Pals (free) Book Creator (free)

So we all know Donald Trump uses (& abuses) Twitter...but is there anything worthwhile for teachers on this social media platform? We asked our resident Twitter star, Rob Kelly, to share why he loves it as a dynamic form of PD. For educators, Twitter is a fantastic tool to connect with like-minded colleagues. Teachers from across the globe use Twitter on a daily basis to connect with a professional learning network (PLN) to engage in informal conversations around professional development, technology integration, physical education, literacy and numeracy development, etc. It’s a thriving community of amazing professional potential inspiring the next generation. To get you started, here's my top 5 educators to follow: If you’re like me and teach in the technology field, Twitter is a great way to be inspired by talented educators doing amazing things in the STEM and Digital Technologies space. Take some time to explore people’s timelines and posts and remember that the best way to build your own network is by ‘favouriting’, ‘re-tweeting’ and ‘replying’ to posts. Remember the golden rule, ‘always be kind’ and you’ll be fine. Hashtags are a way of searching Twitter for more relevant content. Too often I hear teachers say that they use technology to enhance maths teaching and learning, when really what they're really saying is that their kids play maths games! Equatio is a toolbar that works right alongside G Suite (or Word). It has a range of functions that are used to make maths notation easier to work with digitally. Touch screen devices are perfect as you can use handwriting recognition or to make maths accesible to any student no matter the learning difficulty- try out the voice input. In addition to the toolbar, Mathspace is a separate environment- like a big mathematics whiteboard. Perfect for displaying on large screens and having students manipulate objects and share maths learning. Mathspace becomes even more powerful when it is collaborative and students can work with their peers and teachers in the one digital space (NB. students need the school subscription for this functionality) The good folk at Texthelp make EquatIO free for teachers, available as a Google Chrome Extension or a desktop application for Windows or Mac devices. EquatIO is free for teachers forever. Click the here text.help/anz-fft to access your Free for Teachers subscription.

You may have heard teachers or your school’s ‘techie’ person mention AR (or Augmented Reality) and how we should use it in the classroom. We seem to be bombarded in PL meetings with new fandangle apps and how we are strongly encouraged to use them. The real question is, does it have educational value? We decided to investigate the basic uses of AR in the classroom and whether it should be your next app download. What is AR? “If you use an iPad, you can see ‘things’ around you in the real world” - Grade 2 student Starting Small with AR Makr - In the Classroom We utilised AR in a Year 4 classroom whilst learning about Australian animals. The students spent weeks before researching the animal, its features, habitat, diet, etc. Students wanted to create a ‘Classroom Zoo’ to share their learning with the Junior School hence the need for AR. How To: Download AR Makr to your iPad (will not work on older iPads) and also Sketches for School In Sketches, draw an animal or something related to the learning outcome Download the image with a transparent background Open AR Makr and follow the instructions to find a suitable surface location Add your image and click place Once placed, you should be able to see the image in your current reality with a device Enhance: You can add multiple images to compliment your main image. For example, a turtle, in the ocean with seaweed around it. Each image has the ability to move. This enhances the image and the AR experience. For example, the earth orbiting around the sun. App - AR Makr AR Makr is loaded with: Pre-made starter templates such as The Three Little Pigs Drawing tool 3D shapes such as a sphere, cube and pyramid that you can use in the classroom. With a bit of imagination you can link this to numeracy or other How AR is Being Used Today Science Mathematics - Teaching of place value and shapes Head to twitter and follow Paul Hamilton for all the AR free ideas you can handle: @PaulHamilton8
