Sunday Worship
(from Eugene Peterson’s “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction”) “There is a great market for religious experience in our world; there is little enthusiasm for the patient acquisition of virtue, little inclination to sign up for a long apprenticeship in what earlier generations of Christians called holiness.” (Charles Spurgeon) “In all of my years of service to my Lord, I have discovered a truth that has never failed and has never been compromised. That truth is that it is beyond the realm of possibilities that one has the ability to out give God. Even if I give whole of my worth to Him, He will find a way to give back to me much more than I gave.” (Tim Keller) “But if we’re going to think about our relationship to the Old Testament tithe, I’d do it like this. Surely we’re more blessed than the OT saints. Why, then, would we assume we’d be expected to be less generous? So Christians should see the OT tithe as a kind of minimum percentage of their income to give away.” (C. S. Lewis) “I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give.I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare.”

Presider: E. David Daebii Choi Preacher: P. Jim Jung CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 119:161-168, Sin/Shin 161Princes persecute me without cause, but my heart stands in awe of your words. 162I rejoice at your word like one who finds great spoil. 163I hate and abhor falsehood, but I love your law. 164Seven times a day I praise you for your righteous rules. 165Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble. 166I hope for your salvation, O Lord, and I do your commandments. 167My soul keeps your testimonies; I love them exceedingly. 168I keep your precepts and testimonies, for all my ways are before you. SILENT CONFESSION Let us prepare our hearts by privately confessing our sins to our loving Heavenly Father. Be honest before God, and bear your heart and soul to Him. Thank Him and Praise Him for the good things; and confess those sins you knowingly and unknowingly commit, even the sin of omitting the good that you ought to have done. (Silent Private Prayer) ASSURANCE OF PARDON (In Christ, our sins are covered!) Hear the good news! Isaiah 53:4-5 “4Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.” PRAYER OF ADORATION AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Heidelberg Catechism – Lord’s Day #45 – PRAYER 116. Why is prayer necessary for Christians? Because it is the chief part of thankfulness which God requires of us,[1] and because God will give His grace and Holy Spirit only to those who earnestly and without ceasing ask them of Him, and render thanks unto Him for them.[2] [1]Ps. 50:14-15. [2]Mt. 7:7-8; Lk. 11:9-10, 13; Mt. 13:12; *Eph. 6:18. 117. What belongs to such prayer which is acceptable to God and which He will hear? First, that with our whole heart[1] we call only upon the one true God, who has revealed Himself to us in His Word,[2] for all that He has commanded us to ask of Him;[3] second, that we thoroughly know our need and misery,[4] so as to humble ourselves in the presence of His divine majesty;[5] third, that we be firmly assured[6] that notwithstanding our unworthiness He will, for the sake of Christ our Lord, certainly hear our prayer,[7] as He has promised us in His Word.[8] [1]Jn. 4:22-24. [2]Rom. 8:26; I Jn. 5:14. [3]Ps. 27:8. [4]II Chr. 20:12. [5]Ps. 2:10; 34:18; Isa. 66:2. [6]Rom. 10:14; Jas. 1:6. [7]Jn. 14:13-16; Dan. 9:17-18. [8]Mt. 7:8; Ps. 143:1; *Lk. 18:13. 118. What has God commanded us to ask of Him? All things necessary for soul and body,[1] which Christ our Lord comprised in the prayer which He Himself taught us. [1]Jas. 1:17. Mt. 6:33. *I Pet. 5:7. *Phil. 4:6. 119. What is the Lord's Prayer? Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.[1] [1]Mt. 6:9-13; Lk. 11:2-4. The Bible gives us an enduring principle of tithing of our gross income as the baseline for the Christian’s worship through giving (2 Cor 9:7; Malachi 3:8-10). If every church member gave 10%, we would have enough financial resources for all the gospel ministry God is calling our church to do. Let the Spirit guide you in all final matters.
