Pet Health 101 with Dr. Jasmine Shanelle Streeter, Veterinarian CEO & Founder of Forrest Street LLC. My dog is anxious during the 4th of July weekend, can CBD help calm him down? My calmest, Anxious Dog Mom July 4th is an exhilarating holiday to celebrate, but it can be difficult to experience for pets suffering from anxiety or noise phobias. Sparkling sparklers, roman candles, and cherry bombs can be exciting to watch and ignite, but may not be welcome by your pet. There are a variety of ways to ease anxious pets during stressful periods and industrial hemp-based products containing cannabidiol (CBD) can be of benefit. Industrial hemp products, by definition, contain less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). One benefit of cannabidiol for pets is that it is not psychoactive and has been documented in research as an effective therapeutic remedy for anxiety, anti-psychotic and behavior modification, inducing a calming and sedative effect. All mammals have an endocannabinoid system that helps the body maintain homeostasis by producing its own cannabinoids. Phytocannabinoids are found in the cannabis plant and assist the body like endocannabinoids. Dogs have a greater number of endocannabinoid receptors than humans, which is why they are extremely sensitive to THC.
Before beginning a cannabis or CBD product, always have your pet examined by a “4/20 friendly” veterinarian and ask their advice. Your veterinarian may ask to run tests to rule out underlying problems which create behavior concerns that manifest as anxiety or separation disorder. In addition to hemp-based CBD, consider beginning daily supplements like Vitamin B and Fish Oil and incorporating Thundershirts to help comfort your pet during stressful events. On the big day, try to calm your pet by placing them in a location away from loud sounds and bright lights. Play soothing calming music and consider pheromone therapy like an Adaptil collar for dogs or Feliway which is proven to calm cats. For extremely anxious pets, pharmaceuticals from a licensed veterinarian or behavioral modification training may be required to prevent the pet from harming themselves or others during stressful events. Whatever you decide, I hope your day goes splendidly and your fur baby enjoys the experience as much as you. Legal Tip with Ryan Kocot Ryan T. Kocot, Esq. Chief Compliance Officer - ikänik Farms Website: www.kocotlaw.com The regulation of hemp-derived products is the Wild, Wild, West right now, but tread carefully. Make sure you do your research and consult with an attorney if need be to ensure that your business is not only profitable but also legal. All too often I hear: “ABC Company is selling XYZ hemp-derived CBD product, so why can’t I?” Just because a hemp-derived product company hasn’t been shut down (yet) doesn’t mean that the business is operating legally. Once again, do your research. “Research” includes the 2018 Farm Bill, FD&C Act, as well as any state law and/or licensing structure. If you live in a state that hasn’t taken a stance on hemp-derived products, look to other states’ regulations to get ahead of the curve. The state you live in likely won’t reinvent the wheel when writing their own regulations, so I would expect to see similar regulatory structures across the country.”

Inflammation and CBD Dr. Michael Rubenstein Chiropractor & Laser specialist - Active Life Wellness Website: www.activelifewellness.com Most people today struggle with understanding many of the causes of their health-related issues and as it turns out, a lot of their issues can be traced back to a not so recognized culprit; inflammation. Before we get into the meat of this topic it is important to understand the differences between acute inflammation and chronic, since both are very different. A standard inflammation definition: a local response to cellular injury that is marked by capillary dilatation, leukocytic infiltration, redness, heat, and pain, which serves as a mechanism initiating the elimination of noxious agents and of damaged tissue. This is more specifically an acute inflammation definition, but it will suffice for our purposes. Acute inflammation is the type of inflammation that can last from an hour to a few days, whereas chronic can last from months to years. At times inflammation can be good; for example, when you trip and hurt your ankle, this is your body’s natural defense to isolate the injury and send the necessary resources to help the injury to heal. Now there are instances where acute and chronic inflammation occurs deep inside the body affecting organs and similar tissues. Acute inflammation in this instance may not even elicit symptoms until hitting the chronic mark. Chronic inflammation can cause many issues, such as swelling and loss of function of blood vessels, swelling and loss of function of muscle and even create disruptions with your gut biome.

So how does CBD help with inflammation? The inflammation process goes into full effect when the body initiates the release of cytokine cells (immune system cells). Studies have shown that Cannabinoids help to down-regulate or reduce cytokine production by immune cells, which acts as a disruption of the well-regulated immune response. Meaning without these cells (cytokine cells) being called into action, the body’s natural inflammatory response is much less, or not at all. Hence, reducing inflammation as a whole. The exact process is still not 100% clear on how CBD reduces inflammation, but research clearly indicates that CBD does help reduce inflammation as a whole. One study that should be noted showed scientists giving mice who had rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 5 mg/kg of CBD a daily orally. The results indicated an inhibition of disease progression, showing that the small dose of CBD in the mice’s system reduced the inflammatory disease and the condition did not worsen. (1) Clearly, more research needs to be conducted regarding CBD and the way in which it helps with inflammation, pain and overall homeostasis. Early studies show positive findings regarding CBD and inflammation and how it can positively impact our body. Resources: 1. Sumariwalla PF, Gallily R, Tchilibon S, Fride E, Mechoulam R, Feldmann M. More than 113 cannabinoids are found in cannabis! Typically, people only think of THC and CBD when they consider cannabis. However, this dynamic plant actually contains more than 113 cannabinoids, along with 600 other phyto-compounds. The reason the other cannabinoids don’t get as much attention is because THC and CBD primarily are present in the highest concentrations. This is why most growers and farmers, when breeding new strains and selecting plants, mainly focus on the THC and CBD content. Some of the lack of research also comes from the fact that cannabis is not yet federally legalized. We do know that each cannabinoid comes with it's own set of properties and effects, so the more we can research the more we will know what this divine plant can actually do!
