GOLF SCRAMBLE RAISES OVER $5000 for youth PROGRAMS The 3rd annual golf tournament was held on September 26 at Superior National Golf Course. Attendance was lower than hoped, but the weather was beautiful, the course was in great shape, the fall colors on Lutsen Mountain were breath taking, and all of the golfers that turned out had a great time! Thank you local sponsors and businesses! The Scramble is still a successful event that continues to support local youth programming thanks to you: Grand Marais State Bank, Hungry Hippie Taco, Hungry Hippie Hostel, Ruby’s Pantry, Birch Bark Books and Gifts, and Jerry and Laurie Slomkowski. Thank you for contributing to our community!
THE END OF A GREAT PLACE GARDEN SEASON - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The beautiful garden in front of the Y is still blooming! We are sending out a huge thank you to Jen Trowbridge for organizing the project, maintaining the plants this summer, and building a great program engaging our school-age and childcare kids in the science, culture, and fun of gardening. Her vision and guidance made this project memorable for all and sustainable for many summers. Thank you, Jen! While it's been a amazing fall, it's time to close down the YMCA garden for the winter. As a thank you to Jen for all her hard work, we are asking for volunteers to help with storing the dirt and planters for the season. Contact Betsy Blaisdell if you'd like to help and we will set-up a time to get together: bblaisdell@cookcountyymca.org or 218-387-3386, ext 503.
BUY A FEW LETTERS FOR A GREAT CAUSE This fall we need your help to complete a large, colorful scrabble board in the lobby of the YMCA. We are inviting you to donate to the YMCA and buy a few letter tiles to complete our YMCA centered words. You might be inspired to spend a unique amount to spell "purpose" or "swimming". Donate $100 as part of our 100 Campaign or choose any amount that works for you. All proceeds are donations that support access to YMCA programs and membership so that all in our community can participate. Donate at the YMCA Membership desk or online!

TRY A NEW CLASS THIS MONTH: TAI CHI FOR HEALTH Tai Chi for Health is joining the schedule on Tuesdays from 9:00-9:45 AM starting October 5th. Bruce Tyler shares his extensive background in Tai Chi with members and guests in this class. All levels are welcome. What is Tai Chi? Tai Chi originated in ancient China and is now practiced around the world as an effective exercise for health. Tai Chi consists of slow, fluid, gentle movements. Breathing is slow, relaxed, and deep to aid concentration. Tai Chi is easy to learn, can be done almost anywhere, and is suitable for almost anyone. In this class you will learn a gentle warm-up set and a short set of Tai Chi movements. You may sit or stand as you are able and as your strength increases. You will also learn some simple breathing exercises to aid in relaxation. Benefits of Tai Chi—after a period of instruction and practice—include improved mind-body connection; awareness of where your body is in space; increased leg strength; increased confidence in movement and reduced fear of falling; reduced/controlled pain in joints from arthritis or other chronic conditions; mental tranquility and relaxation. .
