Hmmm…. I have always loved animals of all sorts. While doing research at Wellesley I became allergic to my rats, so I steer away from rodents as pets. Right now we have 2 Golden Retrievers named Zinny and Autumn, 2 cats named Batman and Pumpkin Sweetie I Love You, and a bunch of chickens. 15 laying hens, Thelma the Buff Orpington is my favorite. Four fabulous Silkie hens, and 2 bantam Cochins, one of which is a rooster named Hi Ho (Silver). Chickens really are great! They are beautiful, comical, snuggly, and they give me the most beautiful and delicious eggs! Also, I’ve tended to do things twice. Married twice, had a boy and a girl twice, two careers, braces twice. Only divorced once, though.
Consultant, Strategic Planning
Goodnight Gorilla (favorite kids book that always makes me smile)
I started working as a pharmaceutical rep for Merck right out of college. LOVED the job! LOVED the flexibility! LOVED the salary and benefits! After a very successful 18 years, downsizing happened to me in 2008. I was crushed. With 18 months of full salary and benefits, I got pregnant with my 4th child and got to be a stay at home mom as I tried to figure out what was next. I became a Board Certified Lactation Consultant, then realized that I couldn’t get insurance reimbursement unless I was an R.N. I applied to the local school with the quickest route to R.N., but had missed the application deadline. No extensions available… So I bit the bullet, took the GRE’s again, and applied to the Master’s program at UVM. 3 ½ years of constant schooling later I had my degree and started working at Planned Parenthood. I’ve been with PP for 4 years now. I cannot imagine working in an environment that is any more supportive, respectful, or full of passionate individuals who believe with every cell of their being that every single person deserves to be treated with respect and compassion! Especially in the current ridiculous climate of our nation, I know that the work I do is vitally important. People who really know me often comment “of COURSE you work at Planned Parenthood. You’ve been doing this work all of your life.” I think that I am right where I was meant to be. For now, anyway.

NAME WHILE AT WELLESLEY: Karen Elizabeth Body
She practiced listening and loving and also setting healthy boundaries. She stopped wearing things to make herself look slimmer or hipper and began to wear laughter and curiosity instead. She grew happy.”
“She realized she could no longer carry the weight of other people’s expectations or the responsibility for their happiness. She realized she could decide to be at peace herself. And she could care for herself well.
Ellie just graduated from the University of Redlands in California. And she is staying out there. Very much in love with her boyfriend who is from California. Ellie has a job, bought a car with cash, wears sunscreen. She ran Cross Country and Track all through college and just had her best season ever. She now has the 2nd fastest time in Redlands history in the Women’s 3000M Steeplechase! Ellie is beautiful and fierce and has a heart of gold. And I miss hugging her and kissing her face. William is my little boy who I feel is about to have a huge growth spurt. He will be 13 this summer. William’s favorite sport to play is lacrosse. He plays goalie and I love to watch him! William has a huge heart and is kind to friends at school, little kids in the neighborhood, animals, and usually to his sister at home. Charlotte is about to “graduate” from 4th grade. I will finally be done with being an Elementary School Mom! Charlotte is a voracious reader and loves to be challenged in school. She is all about animals and is currently trying to figure out a strategy to make me think we should have goats. Charlotte loves cross country skiing and running, and is becoming quite the lacrosse goalie herself! She is my last chance to be a Wellesley Mom… I feel very fortunate to have many friends in many different areas of my life. I feel connected to my community and have a sense of belonging and knowing that I’ve got a village of individuals who will drop everything to help me out.
Be this woman! I’m going to use a favorite quote that I found where all great quotes come from, FaceBook, Rebranding Middle-Age:
Don’t be in such a rush. Rush to get married, rush to get a job, rush to have kids… Savor the moments. Travel more. Realize that you are beautiful. Inside and out! You are strong in mind and body. Stronger than you think. Treasure the people in your life. Don’t be afraid to take risks. To keep on doing what you know is the safe bet, but what you haven’t tried yet might be the best thing ever. And always do small things with great love.
So so many… My first home, my first love, my roots and my foundation, my Mother. Mom went to Heaven in March of last year. She fell in the garage at our ski house and had a massive head injury. Her sweet soul went on to eternal life the following day, surrounded by Dad, my brother and 2 sisters, a niece and a nephew, and me. We sang, we prayed, we laughed and told stories. We hugged and kissed Mom, and I rubbed her feet for hours. There was so so much love and so many tears. I’m so thankful for the love of my family. My safe space. And for friends who know the pain of the grief. And for Maryann Ford and the FB group full of acceptance and understanding. There were times when I couldn’t imagine how I would make it without Mom at the other end of the phone every single day. Without her Bitmoji blowing up my phone. Without her forwarded emails. And here I am. 15 months since kissing her soft cheeks. And Mom is with me. Dad is hanging in there. Just turned 80. Missing his sweetie like crazy. He had to learn so much of the basic day to day running of the house. He deepened his faith and is grounded more firmly than ever. He shares his feelings even more than his thoughts now. Dad is showing us all how to more forward with grief, and I’m so glad that I have siblings to share all of this with. Anita (Russo Bartschat ‘91) has been my best friend and the one I couldn’t ever do without since pretty much the day she was born. I am so very very thankful that Mom and Dad had that fourth child! She is my rock, and probably the only person who gets me completely. Our conversations are deep and detailed, and can turn in a millisecond into a totally different conversation on a completely different topic. In Pictionary, when one of us draws a straight line, the other immediately knows exactly what it is. My Wellesley tribe. Especially my Sisters Clare, Sarah, Ruth, and Ellen. When we are together I feel the most like me. Laughing, crying, signing, dancing, wishing our times together were endless. Four years within the walls of Stone and around our Wellesley home. And now it’s been 34 years that we’ve known each other?! My family is pretty great. My husband, Whip, has learned to accept that I’m going to do what I’m going to do. And that usually involves some crazy balance of kid activities, visiting family, crafts and knitting, and rest time. He owns Vermont Harvest specialty foods and makes jams, jellies, dips, sauces, and shortbread cookies. Self-employment lends itself to being an involved Dad. He has been coaching soccer and lacrosse for our two youngest kids, and is now reffing as well. He has had to learn that every thought that pops into his head should not necessarily come out of his mouth. Mitchell is the one who made me a Mom. He is now almost 26. Graduated from Wesleyan in 2015 and is finishing up his second year of pharmacy school. Currently unattached, really hard worker, quirky sense of humor, and always comes out from behind the pharmacy counter to give me a hug and a kiss. CURRENT VOCATION: I am a full-time pre-K and art teacher and along with my husband navigate life with two busy 12 year olds
I have been lucky enough to travel during my single years, as well as when I got married and had kids. Nothing terribly exotic but there has been a lot of variety. For much of my life I was a daughter but 2 years ago this role changed when my mother passed away after a very brief illness. Her death led my brother and I to become estate executors and the owners/sellers of our childhood home which my parents built. As siblings we became closer but it was and is rather disconcerting to now be without both parents.
My family and extended family. My work colleagues who I spend so much time with in the trenches. The little people who I teach - some of them I will know for 3 years and others for just a year but our relationship develops during such formative years of their lives. Hopefully I will start them on a path of loving to learn and explore.

I recently read The Half Has Never Been Told for class. Very sad, but compelling book on the economics of slavery in America.
I retired from the Navy in 2017 after 27 years. In that time I truly had the opportunity to see the world and have so many experiences, good and bad (mostly good) that I could not have imagined. Since retiring , I have been working at a running specialty store and as of the Spring 2019 semester, am in the George Mason University Masters Program in Applied History. I am also training for my first — and planned as only — marathon, the Marine Corps Marathon in October.

NOTE TO FUTURE SELF: Well, I sometimes wish I could have some insight into the future, what it will hold, so I know how to plan, but I really have no clue! As I heard in a song, let's dream like we'll live forever, but live today as if it could be our last.
I finished climbing all the Colorado fourteeners (58 of them, official and unofficial) in 2012; I love back-country telemark skiing, I have trekked in Nepal two times, gone on mission trips to Israel, Amsterdam, and Bulgaria (that last with Continental Singers). Unfortunately my current job doesn't give me much vacation time! I want to travel more. I enjoy singing in choirs and playing guitar; sometimes I get the opportunity to play at my church or in small groups, or at the local Hootenanny. I went back to school in 2012, earning a Certificate in Accounting from Metropolitan State University of Denver in 2014. I am still trying to find a more permanent/better job, preferably in the federal government, where I have 6 1/2 years in that would count toward benefits and retirement...

COLLEGE MAJOR(S): Economics/History
CURRENT VOCATION: I’ve always worked in California on ways to organize communities that systemically improves people’s economic and educational opportunities, and every few years I get interested in new ways to do this, be it through non-profits, for-profits, philanthropy, the public sector, or some combination. I’m presently excited to be developing my facilitation skills and am right now working as a consultant, with community colleges, employers and other groups on how they can better help young people connect to good jobs. While I really like this issue, I’m also interested in other pressing concerns, the biggest for me is climate change.
Other ways I’ve spent my time over the past 30 years: I live with my partner Janet and our blended family of four kids and a lot of pets, before that I was raising my daughter Frances (age 12), and before that I barely remember as family life is so consuming, although I faintly recall I had more free time. I’ve been fortunate to have had great trips to lots of parts of the world. I’ve also been fortunate to be able to compete in sports, mostly post-Wellesley playing squash, but a couple years ago I switched to tennis which I had dropped as a kid, and am having a lot of fun with it. About five years ago I started going to church (Methodist) and it has been transformative, I feel so much more enriched, grounded and open.
IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN MY LIFE: My family, my mom (who is a healthy 84), my brother (who died in a car accident two years ago), the people in the communities I’m in and a feeling that I am part of humankind.

1989-1991 Worked on an MA in Medieval Studies from the University of York 1989-2000 Worked as a freelance proofreader and copyeditor for various UK-based academic publishers 1991-1997 Lived in Manchester (climate not recommended) 1991 Married John Tadman, who eventually became the best of ex-husbands Oct. 1994 Daughter Olivia Tadman born <3 <3 <3 July 1997 Moved to Pretoria South Africa with my husband and daughter. This move was my rebirth - I got my UK driver's license (having unwisely let my US one lapse) and became involved in the expat community there, participating in all the activities that I had been missing in Manchester - book groups, going regularly to a good gym, compiling a charity cookbook, rediscovering many hobbies that I had let disappear from my life (stained glass, pottery, needlework), finding a circle of friends with whom I had a lot in common. I even learned how to golf (with mixed results). Livvie attended a lovely Montessori school on a farm nearby. I adored showing off my adopted homeland to visitors - and I felt very welcome there. Nelson Mandela was the president and everyone I met was so optimistic about their country's future. Seeing zebras drinking from the swimming pool and penguins on the beach was just icing on a huge delicious cake. July 2000 Left South Africa and left JT. Moved to Oxford (never even crossed my mind to return to the US - I'd rather be a poor single parent in the UK than in the US). Oxford was terra incognita, but London was too frightening a prospect for a single parent of a 5-year-old, and publishing was the only job I knew. This move was another rebirth - the city has been a perfect fit for me and my mixed-nationality daughter. January 2001 Started a job at Oxford University Press on the Oxford English Dictionary. It was meant to be a short-term commitment, but I'm still there nearly 20 years later March 2004 Married Adrian Mourby - we met at a book group and were friends who went to the movies together for a little while. He proposed within six weeks of our first date-date. Reader, I married him - inside our wedding bands is engraved "Incipit vita nova". I've spent the past 15 years raising Liv (who toyed with the idea of Wellesley but went to the University of York, my other alma mater, and now lives in London), travelling the world with Liv and with Adrian who works as a travel writer. He and I produced some Mozart operas together in Oxford. These days I edit his books and articles (unpaid). The rest of the time I research words for the OED, and look after a pair of fluffy Maine Coon brothers. Adrian and I decided to have cats rather than children of our own, and it was definitely the right decision for us. Two years ago I was lucky enough to to be able to afford to go down to working four days a week. Now I spend my Fridays helping out at the Oxford Food Bank, where we collect, sort and distribute fresh food that would otherwise go to landfill. Any extra time I have (not spent in the ways mentioned above) goes on reading and cooking (in a self-designed and extended kitchen).
