The year certainly did not go how we envisioned it going but we stayed strong and persevered. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who attended committee meetings, volunteered your time & energy and did everything in your power to keep things rolling this year. YOU are what makes LABA strong and will keep LABA strong.
I would also like to thank the LABA staff. Tena, you’ve been a rock this year and you’ve done a fabulous job of reaching out to other HBA’s and EOs to brainstorm and plan as best as possible. If we ever thought we were in a rut by doing things the same year after year, this year turned that idea upside down! There has not been a LABA event in the past 7 months that has not been canceled or modified. Your committee chairs have been fabulous leaders this year! They have faced adversity but they have helped to guide some very creative discussions about how we can have an event or modify an event.
We recently wrapped up the “in person” portion of the Parade of Homes and I cannot tell you how many times I heard people mention that it was so nice to have a normal event again. Well, it wasn’t our normal “normal” but it was an opportunity for people to get out of the house and enjoy the incredible talent of several of our builders and associates. Masks were worn, hands were sanitized, door knobs and railings were sanitized and the people touring the homes appreciated that and a chance to enjoy some time out of the house. Several people commented that they have done the POH tour together for years and this was a great opportunity for them to do something together again. Congratulations to all of you for surviving the past several months. Most were considered “essential” from Day 1 which kept all of us busy and continues to keep us busy. Each of us owes a great deal of thanks to the people at NAHB and WBA who were on the phone making sure we had that essential title and could keep housing moving along strong. This proved to be a very valuable part of our memberships this year!
Stay strong, remain flexible, remember to find joy in something (a place, a person, an event) and Thank You for all that you have done and continue to do for OUR Association! At the end of this month, I have the honor and privilege of turning the presidency over to Duane Schultz. I look forward to seeing the association’s onward and upward progress under Duane’s
leadership! He may be considerably quieter
than me, but he’s got fabulous ideas and will
lead us with wisdom and thoughtfulness.
Thank you again for your support of LABA,
and myself over the past year. With amazing
members like you, we will bounce back
stronger than ever!

October President's Message
Duane Schulze, Marlin Homes LLC
This year LABA is going to be celebrating its 50th year. I am honored to be a part of this well establish organization. At this time, I would like to thank all the past leadership and members who had the foresight to take LABA where it is today. My commitment along with our new board of directors and with the help from our members we will guide this great organization through these tough times and build on the past to move LABA to new heights.
We need to remain focused to overcome the issues created by the COVID-19 virus that effect our every movement today. To do this we need to keep a positive attitude and focus on the issues that affect the LABA organization today and will affect our members in the future. What this means is we need to establish ways to maintain income and build membership. To maintain income, we will be looking at new ways to generate income because we can’t only count on the traditional fundraisers, which are well established and took us to the new heights that we were at before the virus effected our lives. In addition to these current fundraisers, we need to explore ways to work and generate income which will work in these times of COVID-19 which are affecting us this year and possibly into the new year.
I would again like to thank Jody Swenson for her leadership through these tough times. Jody has stepped up
this year to take on the role to promote LABA by
putting together ways to celebrate our 50th year.
I would encourage all of us to think about the
50th year and pass on ideas to Jody and offer
help where you can.
LABA also needs a builder board member. So,
if any builder members are willing to step up to
this challenge please let me or Tena know.

White House Joins NAHB in Opposing House Energy Bill
The White House recently joined NAHB in opposing House energy bill H.R. 4447 due in part to problematic language regarding building codes that would harm housing affordability.
NAHB has come out in strong opposition to the legislation because it would needlessly raise home construction costs while doing little to boost energy efficiency in the housing sector.
NAHB ran a strong grassroots campaign asking members to reach out to their congressional members and urge them to oppose the legislation.
Over the past two years, NAHB has also met with the White House to discuss concerns about the building code language. NAHB's leadership was pleased to see that the administration shares the association's concerns.
The full Statement of Administration Policy can be viewed on the White House's website.
Year-Over-Year Gains in Permits
Over the first six months of 2020 – and after the onset of the impact of the coronavirus – total single-family permits issued year-to-date nationwide reached 433,484. This is a 3.8% increase over the June 2019 level of 417,453.
Year-to-date ending in June, single-family permits across the four regions ranging from an increase of 6.5% in the South to a decline of 1.7% in the Northeast. In multi- family permits, the South reported a 3.1% increase while the other three regions reported declines – Northeast (-14.7%), Midwest (-6.2%), and West (-5.6%).
Between June 2019, and June 2020, 34 states saw growth in single-family permits while 16 states and the District of Columbia registered a decline. South Dakota recorded the highest growth rate during this time at 36.7% from 1,178 to 1,610.

New Home Sales at Highest Pace Since September 2006
In another indicator that housing continues to lead the economy forward, sales of newly built, single-family homes in August topped the 1 million mark and reached their highest pace since September 2006.
Sales increased 4.8% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.01 million units, according to newly released data by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau.
The August rate is 43.2% higher than the August 2019 pace.
“Surging sales are consistent with record builder confidence levels stemming from higher buyer traffic, historically low interest rates and a shift in demand for lower density markets,” said NAHB Chairman Chuck Fowke. “However, higher lumber costs and limited building material availability in some markets signify we could see higher prices down the road.” “New home sales are now 15% higher on basis, with a year-to-date gains in all regions,” said NAHB Chief Economist Robert Dietz. “But with inventory at just a 3.3 months’ supply, more construction is needed. The challenge will be whether materials and labor are available.”
That 3.3 month's supply means just 282,000 new single-family homes are for sale, 40% lower than August 2019. The current months’ supply is the lowest in the history of the data series, which goes back to 1963. Of the inventory total, just 54,000 are completed and ready to occupy.
