Wheatley Park School
Headteacher's Message Dear Parents/Carers, Goodbye to Kevin Heritage One of the true pillars of our community is stepping down for a well-deserved retirement this Christmas. Kevin Heritage, who will be known to many both within our school and local community, has served Wheatley Park for over twenty-five years. Between 1979 and 1990, Kevin was a hugely respected history teacher, inspiring countless students with a deep love of his subject. Then, after a spell at The Cherwell School, he returned in September 2006 and progressed through a variety of roles to eventually take up the key post of School Manager, responsible for the smooth operation of all non-teaching aspects of the school. Throughout his time at Wheatley, Kevin has fully epitomized our value of Everyone Caring, always placing the needs of others before his own. Kevin is also a passionate archivist and guardian of our site’s long and fascinating history, which he will always be happy to relate to you. (Just make sure you have a week or two to spare!) Given that Kevin is one of those people who truly merits the label of 'irreplaceable', we are very pleased that he intends to maintain a close association with the school through a variety of ways. That said, we wish him all the best for his retirement and offer him our deep gratitude for enriching our community so greatly. Where next for WPS? A return to greater (if not yet complete) normality this year has allowed us to reassess our strengths and areas for development as a school. Some major surveys conducted across River Learning Trust schools last summer provided helpful feedback. Overall, the results for Wheatley Park were highly encouraging. Of the eighteen questions in the parent/carer section, WPS scored above average for the secondary schools within the trust on seventeen. Dealing with parental concerns and supporting students with SEND needs emerged as particular relative strengths, although we fully acknowledge we could always be better still in both areas. In the student section, we scored above the secondary school average on fifteen out of the seventeen questions with particularly strong scores relative to other schools for providing helpful information on next steps and for being a school that our students would recommend to a friend. Two areas for further development were flagged in the student section which matched our own self-assessment: encouraging reading and providing work that is always sufficiently challenging. Initiatives are in place to address both areas in school, and (with Christmas around the corner) any support from home to encourage the richly rewarding habit of reading for pleasure as well as knowledge acquisition would be greatly appreciated. With your unstinting support, we are all determined to shake off the effects of the pandemic as soon as we are able and keep pushing Wheatley Park along its journey to providing an outstanding education for every student in a way that is sustainable for all. Wishing you a happy and healthy Christmas, Tim Martin Headteacher Term 1 2021-22
Governors' message
Dear Students, Staff, Parents and Carers, In last year’s newsletter, we wrote that “we do not underestimate the damage done to the nation’s children by this pandemic, both in terms of their learning and their mental health. Righting these wrongs will take time, effort and dedication……”. We know that these words were, unfortunately, somewhat prophetic as this term has been a challenge for everyone at Wheatley Park School. However, it is also true to say that everyone, and we mean everyone, has responded to something approaching normal school life with amazing gusto, enthusiasm and yes, dedication. Thank you to you all for such a magnificent effort. We are very focused on helping the students whose learning has been most impacted by the pandemic, notably Years 7 and 8, to catch up as quickly as they can. To aid this important work, some of you will be aware that we are proposing to change the structure of our Key Stage 3 and 4 curriculums to allow greater foundation learning in the students’ earlier years at Wheatley Park. This is a critical change, and your Governors will be carefully monitoring the impact of any changes. We would like to express our sincere thanks to our wonderful staff, who always go the extra mile for your children and for each other. We talk to many stakeholders as part of our roles as your Governors and what we are told only reinforces what the staff, student and parent surveys tell us: the staff at Wheatley Park School are exceptional. We would like to express our sincere thanks and best wishes on the retirement of Kevin and Wendy Heritage at the end of this term. Kevin has been our School Manager (and prior to that a history teacher) for many years, ensuring our beautiful campus is kept looking immaculate and our buildings maintained and in full use. This is a significant feat as our grounds are unusually large compared to any secondary school in Oxfordshire and we have the listed Old House, in addition to many other buildings, in daily use, all out of our existing budget. Wendy has been the Clerk to the Governors , a role of critical importance to the smooth operation of your Governing Body – without her, none of our meetings will have been scheduled, run or recorded. On behalf of the Governing Body, staff and students, we wish you both a long and happy retirement and much joy with your grandchildren. To try to minimise yet more disruption to your children’s education, please do ensure that everyone in your households is vaccinated and boosted where possible. We recognise that the whole population is beginning to feel a bit like a pin cushion, but it’s so important to be vaccinated, not least because we are now back to the bad old days of one infected child leading to multiple students being forced to self-isolate. Your children have only a short time at Wheatley Park (although some may think it too long!), and any lengthy disruption to their education can have a profound impact on their life chances after they leave us. With best wishes for a safe festive season, plenty of rest over the holidays and a Covid-free New Year, Philip Baillieu & Richard Cave Chair and Vice-Chair of Governors
We are currently seeking a new Parent/Carer Governor to join our Governing Body. This is a fantastic opportunity to be directly involved in the ongoing development of Wheatley Park School. Enthusiasm is more important than experience and training will be provided. If you are interested please contact: head@wheatleypark.org
Attendance: Everyone Learning, Every Day
Despite is being a challenging term in many ways I am pleased to report that our overall student attendance has remained above the National Average since we returned in September. We have plans to continue and improve on this trend for all groups of students and want to thank you for your support during this difficult time. As previously reported, achieving 96% attendance or over means students are more likely to perform, on average, significantly better in their exams providing them with many more opportunities when moving on to their next destinations. The great news is that, despite the pandemic: 277 students in Years 7 to 11 (31%) achieved 100% attendance in Terms 1 and 2 Our Year 7 cohort are leading the way with 44% achieving this milestone. 63% of students have improved their attendance or have remained at 100% attendance from Term 1 to Term 2 445 students in Years 7 to 11 (50%) achieved over our target of 96% attendance in Term 1 and 2 The parent’s role in supporting this is not underestimated and we would like to pass on our thanks for your continued efforts during this academic year. Next term students will be recognised once again for their good attendance and improvement in attendance as normal through certificates, special mentions during assemblies alongside opportunities to win various further reward experiences. Finally, here are a few reminders: Students can get a free breakfast in the bistro every morning from 7.45am There are 190 days in a school year. Therefore there are 175 non-school days to enjoy family time, take holidays, make visits, go shopping or take other appointments. Thank you for helping make every day in school count. If your child has six or more unauthorised late marks in the register over sixty sessions a referral may be made to the County Attendance Team which could ultimately lead to a fine - this OCC County Attendance Team Punctuality and Lateness leaflet provides further information. ECO GROUP
Lo
It's the end of 2021 and a lot has happened this year, in different contexts, but I am going to be focusing on what has happened in regards to the climate. Climate strikes happening again, the Paris agreement and more recently Cop 26. As well as things happening on a larger scale, important things have been happening in school too. Last year in September, Mr Durman and Mrs Chanarin created the Eco-Group. In the beginning, there was only a small number of us who were in Year 9 then (maybe 3 or 4), working hard on projects such as, 'how can we make the canteen more sustainable?' Later on in the year, we had not only grown in members but we had started new projects and were starting to get somewhere with our original projects. We had researched, made assemblies and shared them with the school. This year, we have grown massively with almost 30 members! We have members from all years groups now, so we have a wide range of projects happening at the moment. We are still focused on the canteen being more sustainable with meat, food, waste and recycling. We are also researching the problem of litter in the school and working towards becoming a part of the green flag. As well as students getting involved, we have teachers getting involved too, not only from inside the school, but we are getting staff and teachers from other schools within the River Learning Trust involved too. This opens up many other interesting and exciting opportunities for us. We have made a good start to this group but there is still lots to do. We are open to everyone's input and really appreciate it. We have a good time and are very passionate about what we are doing. if you have any ideas or questions please email us at ecogroup@wheatleypark.org or come along to a meeting to see what we do! My time at Wheatley Park School 1979-1990, and 2006-2021. This is to say to everyone who I have taught in the past, and been colleagues with over the years, a huge thank you for the privilege of working with you, and indeed some of your children, during the two periods I have been at Wheatley Park. I am not disappearing completely, as I will be working on the school and Holton Park Archives, setting up a scaled down archive/museum in the Old House. I will also continue with the Archaeology Club for the immediate future, and will keep organising the community Theatre Trips. We also have the 50th anniversary of Wheatley Park this summer to celebrate, more anon! As you can see, mine is not so much a retirement as a move from responsibility, to perhaps, the more enjoyable voluntary! I first saw Wheatley Park School on 1st April 1979, a young enthusiastic, if not idealistic , history teacher looking for my first job. My car broke down on the way from the Midlands, and I was late and convinced therefore that I wouldn't get the job. I was taken to join the candidates, and found them on the ‘Monet’ bridge over the moat, looking across to the Old House. At this point I really was kicking myself as this had to be one of the most beautiful state comprehensive schools in the country, and I was also to discover it had a rich and enigmatic history. At 7.00pm that evening I was called in and told that I had got the job! I then spent the next eleven wonderful years working to build up the history department, and with many others, creating a new look Wheatley Park under the headship of David John. It was a wonderful time, and they were my best teaching years. When I left, to become Head of Sixth Form at the Cherwell School, I knew somehow I would return one day. Circumstances meant that is exactly what happened, when Kate Curtis appointed me first as Arts Secretary and then, within the year, as Business Manager in 2006. It was like coming home, and I have had the most wonderful sixteen and a half years working with at first Kate Curtis, and now Tim Martin and his wonderful school team, to put the school’s reputation once again at the top. My part has this time been the smooth running of the school, with a fantastic Site, Admin and Support Team. They are a wonderful group of people (about 55 of us believe it or not) and I can honestly say that, with an amazing bunch of teaching staff, we all strive to make Wheatley Park the best it can be on a daily basis. Ours is a truly Comprehensive School with Everyone Learning and Everyone Caring, and both are at the heart of all the decisions taken for the students. It has been a privilege to be part of this journey for the past 42 years ( my sons attended the school when I wasn’t here), and I look forward to being able to support it in a variety of different ways during my retirement, hopefully for many more years. Thank you for your support and have a wonderful Christmas holiday. Let us hope that 2022 can be a better year for us and the world. Kevin Heritage, School Manager
Sixth Form News
After a very difficult Covid year, we were extremely happy to be able to welcome the new cohort of Year 12s in person in September and were relieved that Year 13s would finally be able to experience life in Sixth Form without many interruptions. WPS Sixth Form has been increasing steadily in numbers for the past few years, we now have 228 students compared to 155 students four years ago. We have worked hard to make Sixth Form a welcoming place for our students to study in, in fact, we have just taken delivery of new furniture for the Common Room, which, together with newly painted walls and a mural, designed and painted by sixth formers, make the space feel quite special. Please see photographs in the next page. We have had quite a few things happening this term: We had our Sixth Form open evening in November where we welcomed both current Year 11 students at Wheatley Park and around 20 students from other schools. We have seen numbers of external students rapidly grow in the last few years which looks set to continue. The closing date for applications to Sixth Form is 24th January. We have continued to look at issues surrounding peer on peer abuse and have had the Terrence Higgins Trust into school to talk to sixth formers about their experiences and to discuss education at Wheatley Park around sexual health and wellbeing and how this could be improved. We have also had the Training Effect in, to talk to sixth formers about drugs, alcohol and consent. We are in the middle of the university application process, so far over 50 students have applied and almost 40 of them have at least one offer. We had 13 Oxbridge applicants and 8 of them have been shortlisted for interview, whilst we have others shortlisted for interview in Midwifery, Law, Paramedicine Science, Medicine and Music at a Conservatoire. 25 students in Year 12 visited Trinity College, Oxford University, in November for the day, to gain an insight of what it would be like to study at a top university and what they need to be doing to ensure they have a strong application. A number of Sixth Formers are very busy choreographing dances for the upcoming show 'Grease'. Sixth Form Football The Sixth Form football team played 3 matches - won one, drew one and lost one: Home game against St Clare's College. Won 2 -1 with a last minute goal. Home game against a very strong Henley College team: drew 1 - 1 Away game against Wallingford School: lost 7 - 2 Children in Need - Friday 19 November Friday 19th November was Children In Need day. Students paid £1 to come into school dressed in their pijamas, thanks to them we managed to raise £90. Winter Ball We are really looking forward to the Sixth Form Winter Ball, which will take place on 28th January 2022 at the Belfry Hotel in Milton Common. Tickets have now all sold out for the event. Drama News The show - Grease rehearsals are coming on a treat! We are rehearsing hard and the students have been amazing! This year we have double cast the production in case anyone comes down with covid - that means the show can still go on! Students once again have been in charge of the choreography and have learnt new teaching skills when teaching the whole cast. The show is on 2-5 February 2022 with tickets on sale in January! The WPS PTA Charity has helped us fund new drapes for the Drama studio. They are incredibly smart and will make the space feel much more professional for exams. Curious Incident trip - on December 2nd - we are very excited to go to London to see The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. It was very over-subscribed, but don’t worry as we will run another theatre trip in the new year. Photography News Below are some photos from photography to do with a process called Camera Obscura which is taught in our lessons... ...and to showcase the students ability in photography here a couple of lovely photographs of the school site by Ryan Timmo

This term in careers…. This has been another busy term in careers with Year 11 Post 16 options assemblies, individual careers meetings and Year 13 employment seekers workshops. Year 11 students have important decisions to make about what they choose to do at the end of this year. All Year 11 students have participated in talks from the City of Oxford College, ASK apprenticeships, BMW apprenticeship programme, Wheatley Park Sixth Form and, for those students who are planning to take A Levels next year, a talk about making effective A Level choices from Oxford University. Students have also been strongly encouraged to attend the college open days this term to find out more about the options offered in any of the local colleges. We also took a small group of students to Tiggywinkles Wildlife Rescue Centre to find out more about their animal care courses. Year 13 students looking for work or an apprenticeship at the end of the year have participated in a series of workshops to develop their understanding of where to find employment and of the recruitment process. This has included participating in a mock assessment centre delivered by ASK apprenticeships and a mock employment interview with one of our business volunteers. We continue to work closely with BMW, who will be returning into school in the next few weeks to support interested students make apprenticehip applications, and we will be preparing for our larger scale careers events, which will take place during the Spring and Summer terms. You are welcome to email the careers adviser at abennett@wheatleypark.org with any queries or concerns you have about your son or daughter’s next steps.

It was with enormous pleasure that we were able to open the library again to our students in September. Classes in Years 7,8 & 9 have one of their English lessons in the library and this is an hour dedicated to reading. In these lessons students find out about a wide range of diverse publications and have the opportunity to borrow books. It’s a precious time in the timetable where students can read for pleasure. We use the Accelerated Reader program to assist reading progress. This is a program that is designed to help students find the right level of book, encourage wider reading and experience rewards as they improve their key reading skills. A parent’s guide to Accelerated Reader can be found on the Renaissance Learning website: here Congratulations to Lydia Hinks, Annabella Kanior, Jack Showell-Rogers, Eva Thatcher & Rhianna Ramracheya for becoming Word Millionaires. They have read over a million words, based on the book quizzes they have successfully completed. Congratulations to 7ac/En3 who are leading the way with the highest amount of words read. Spine Chillers Mini Saga Competition - Lots of students entered the Young Writers Spine Chillers competition last academic year. We had wonderful news at the start of this year; 47 students had their stories selected for publication in an anthology. This is a wonderful achievement. CONGRATULATIONS to all those who were selected. The book of stories is available in the library. Young Writers is an organisation that encourages young people to write creatively. They have lots of competitions all year round for all ages. Parents can create an account and access all of their excellent resources https://www.youngwriters.co.uk/ Book Club started this term. We meet on Tuesdays after school. We use this time to share our love of reading and also writing. We are currently reading a book called The Skylarks' War, written by Hilary McKay. It is a book set during the first world war and follows the experiences of a family. We are all enjoying reading it and recommend it. We also enjoy writing together and have recently been writing mini sagas on the theme of ‘Twisted Tales’. Our stories are about villains and we are writing from their point of view. If you would like to join the club, please contact Mrs Lanczak. Chess Club is available in the library at lunch times - Monday to Thursday. Everyone is welcome to join. Some of our more experienced members would be happy to help newcomers learn how to play. Chess is a great game for a whole range of reasons; it’s fun, good for our brains and our mental health - reasons to play chess. Christmas Reading - if you are looking for books to read over Christmas, take a look at the lovereading4kids website. Here is their blog of The Best Children's (& Young Adult’s) books of 2021. The website offers lots of information about books for young people and there are always interesting recommendations. Another great website is the Book Trust. Their Christmas Quiz, So This is Quizmas, would make a great family quiz over the holidays.

Year 8 Girls Football
Year 9 Rugby
South Oxfordshire League 2021: Rugby Union For the first time South Oxfordshire schools have organised a Rugby league. Teams from all of our year groups competed against 8 other schools. It was a welcome return to rugby after none being played last year. Well done to all participants. Girls football At the time of going to press we have just started the South Oxfordshire Girls football league. Each team (u12, u14, u16) will play against 8 other schools during this term and after Christmas. All matches are played on astro, so that we can play under floodlights. If you wish to be involved, please get yourself to training. A special mention to the u13 girls who have played in both the Oxfordshire County cup and the ESFA national cup this term. It has been a busy time for them - even playing 4 matches in one week. In the National cup they have beaten the Swan school from Oxford, Sir Herbert Leon Academy from Milton Keynes and the Oratory school from Berkshire. In the county cup they have beaten Cheney school and King Alfreds. Well played to all involved. Boys Football We have had some mixed success in the early stages of the national and county cups for Y8, 10 and 11 students. After a strong start to their campaign the Y8 students they eventually lost in the 4th round of the National Cup against a very strong Cox Green school from Reading. The Y10 boys also made it to the fourth round where they then lost against The Oxford Academy. The Y11 boys are still going strong in the County Cup and are currently waiting to find out who the will play in the Semi-Finals. After Christmas will see league games begin so ensure you get yourself to football club on a Monday after school (all years). South Oxfordshire Cross country 2021 Congratulations to our KS3 Cross Country Teams who travelled to Gillotts to compete in the South Oxfordshire Schools competition. The nerves were clear for many as this was the first time at this event for most of the students following the covid enforced break. The support for one another, across the year groups, was incredible and I’m sure made a difference to the experience for all involved. Not to mention the team work of the runners who made an impact on their team position because of the tactical and supportive running strategies. A huge well done to you all, we were super proud of you for your performance and conduct. Year 7 Girls - 2nd place overall Year 7 Boys - 2nd place overall Year 8/9 Girls - 3rd place overall Year 8/9 Boys - 5th place overall Special mention to Eva Thatcher who came 3rd individually in her race. Netball 7-9 It has been an absolute pleasure to spend Tuesday afternoons with our KS3 netball players, nudging 50 participants in some weeks! Each week their knowledge and confidence has grown and their eagerness to get stuck into the game remains clear! We are getting set for the netball league and excited for what lies ahead. Special thank you to Kayla and Kacie for their leadership skills and supporting Yr7 in particular and well done to Yr9’s who have taken on team manager roles helping students with positions in play. Netball 10-13 It has been a fabulous start to KS4 & KS5 netball training this academic year, we have a range of years 10-13 in attendance on a weekly basis and lots of fun had by all! In addition to the enjoyment factor, it has been really rewarding to observe the progress made by several players. As to be expected, several were rather rusty in September but have got back up to speed very quickly! Numbers have fluctuated due to other school commitments, including a clash with the school production rehearsals and Y11 revision sessions but we have always had enough to play a full game, which is great! Of note, it is really lovely to have some year 12 & 13 students present to pass on their experience and students confident enough to volunteer to officiate the games. I am very much looking forward to our fixtures starting up after Christmas as I can imagine the level of competitiveness will ramp up further! Interform Interform football for year 7 is well underway on a Friday lunch time in the sports centre. All forms have picked up points so far. The atmosphere has been tremendous with most of year 7 coming to support each other making a bigger nose than the Kassam on a Saturday. The year 11 senior students have helped organise the teams and refereed the matches. The final will be played in the week before Christmas. Years 7 - 9 have been running interform cross country. There have been some great efforts, with pupils running extra laps to bring their form totals down. Results will be announced in celebration assemblies at the end of term.
