I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving. Tuesday, November 27 was Giving Tuesday. They describe themselves on their website as “a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.†They raised over $300 Million in over 150 countries. The power social media commands is surely impressive. The Mission of UIW is one of social justice, caring and giving back. Community service hours are a graduation requirement for all undergraduate students. These hours help fulfill the UIW Mission, but they also help the student in ways that may not be realized. The classroom cannot give one all the educational experiences needed to be a well-rounded person. The Mission is to develop the whole-person and to that end the requirement is to get people involved in their community and grow through those experiences. As an active member of your community you are helping to form a better place for your children. Benefits of community service and giving back will be felt in your career as well. When you meet new people you are building a network that will last a lifetime. A network of like-minded people who help support our ups and downs as we live our daily lives. I invite you go to our Facebook page and tell us how serving your community has benefited you.

A word from our Dean
Meet the Mission is organized and sponsored by the Office of Mission and Ministry, under the leadership of Sr.Walter Maher, and is held every September. On Meet the Mission Day, UIW students and staff engage the greater San Antonio community with service. Since the first MtM Day, the event has grown to see over 200 members of the UIW community deploy to over 25 Community Partner sites to perform service projects on a single day. This year, the 13th annual Meet the Mission Day will take place on Friday, September 14th, 2018, and we will start and end the day at the McDermott Convocation Center in two waves beginning at 7:30 am. This is a great opportunity to connect with other members of the UIW family and community.
