Players Go All-In for WCPL Casino Night! (Photo credit: Kimberley Curry) On Friday, July 27th, the Washington County Public Library hosted their 2nd Annual “All-In for WCPL” Casino Night. The night was full of fun games, heavy hors d'oeuvres by Lake Marie, prizes, and even a $3,000 grand prize jackpot! Guests enjoyed winning chips while playing classic games including; Craps, Poker, Blackjack, Roulette, Texas Hold ‘em, Wheel of Fortune, and mock Slot Machines. In addition to the $3,000 Grand Prize, guests had the chance to win over $10,000 worth of various prizes like a stainless steel grill, Hank Williams Jr./Lynard Skynyrd VIP meet and greet backstage passes & concert tickets, a patio set with fire pit and canopy, a Gulf Coast Family Vacation Package, a weekend getaway at the Wind Creek Resort and Spa, and many other fun prizes. At the end of the night, guests cashed in their chips for tickets to enter into these prize drawings. Many in attendance said it was the most fun event the community offers for adults. Congratulations to all of the big winners and a big thank you to all of the sponsors and donors who made this event such a success! The WCPL Staff would like to give a special thanks to our local sponsors, Harold & Belinda Crouch and The Town of Chatom as well as our donors—South Alabama Gas, Ramey’s, Jordan’s Mini Mart, Beard Dentistry, Budweiser Busch, Cobalt, Villaggio’s & Ginny Lane, The Wharf, OWA, Bayes Bar and Grille, Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, OWA, The Wind Creek, Morrell Turner, Chatom Motor Company, Andrews Hardware, Dippin’ Dots, Rusty Welch from Cajun Ben’s, Bayou Rum Co., Ricky and Rebecca Chancey, and Hank Williams Jr. Thanks to all of those that helped plan and decorate for the event! With your combined help, the Washington County Public Library can continue to offer top-notch programs all ages! We hope that next year’s event will be an even bigger success!
We have had a blast at our "Libraries Rock" Summer Reading Program! Children from local and surrounding counties participated in over 49 programs over the course of 5 weeks. The 3,913 recorded participants read over 2284 books! We are so thankful to everyone who took the time to bring their children and grandchildren to be a part of our program. A special thank you to our sponsors: Alabama Cooperative Extension, BASF, Boise, Chatom Motor Company, Cray Valley, Feeding the Gulf Coast, Friends of the WCPL, Huntsman, Olin, PowerSouth, Town of Chatom, Town of Millry, The First, Washington County Hospital and Nursing Home and Washington County Veterinary Clinic. Our community is so blessed to have organizations and businesses who go above and beyond to provide these enrichment programs and learning opportunities to our children.
Congratulations to Maranda Parnell, on her engagement to Jerry Castaneda and recent move to Poplarville, MS! Maranda worked with WCPL for over 2 years and assisted with summer reading program and many story times. ¡Felicidades a la pareja feliz!
WCPL Employees Jessica Ross and Peyton Deese received degrees from the University of Alabama on August 4th, 2018! Peyton received his Bachelor of Arts in English, and he plans on working at the library while he prepares for law school. Jessica Ross received her Ph.D in Communication & Information Sciences concentrated in library and information studies. Congrats and ROLL TIDE!
WCPL also extends our biggest thanks and warmest wishes to Brenda Howard, who retired for a second time from WCPL this summer! Ms. Brenda worked as acquisitions/cataloging clerk and local history collection specialist for WCPL for 17+ years. Brenda was our consummate reader's advisory, Spelling Bee Queen, and Fairy Godmother to Potter, the Library Kitty! We wish her much happiness during her time with grandkids and family and long days of reading and relaxing in her retirement! We will miss you, Brenda!
