September 2020 - Volume 69 Number 9
Conservation of the Ram's Head Orchid (Cypridepium arietinum)
Jason Miller is relatively new to working closely with native orchids, however, working with rare plants is in his background. Before moving to Wisconsin, Jason worked as the program assistant for the rare plant monitoring program, Plants of Concern, at the Chicago Botanic Garden. This ignited a passion for continuing to work with rare plants and an interest in the unique, and often overlooked, native plants.
After moving to Wisconsin, Jason began volunteering with the rare plant monitoring program in the state and was introduced to the land manager at the Ridges Sanctuary in Door County. This is where he learned of the high diversity of orchids within Wisconsin and the conservation efforts that the Ridges was beginning to better understand and protect this diversity. These efforts began with five focal species, in which the Ridges formed a partnership with Dr. Lisa Grubisha from University of Wisconsin – Green Bay (UWGB) and the North American Orchid Conservation Center (NAOCC).
This project spoke directly to Jason and fit perfectly within his background and shortly after this meeting, he began his graduate studies at UWGB joining Dr. Grubisha’s lab. His thesis research is focusing on the state threatened ram’s head orchid (Cypripedium arietinum) and is taking an integrated approach to the conservation of this species. As part of his research, Jason will be examining the population genetics of extant populations, conducting an in depth soil analysis to determine the micro-site requirements, and examining if the soil chemistry is a driving factor in the fungal associations of populations across the state of Wisconsin.

For over 65 years the SFOS mission has been to foster the culture and conservation of orchids and to promote education of its members and the public about orchids. Our goals include: an exchange of information from exhibitions, publications, and the Internet, maintenance of a reference library, and participation in worldwide activities.
Cypridepium arietinum in situ
From the President
We had another great meeting on August 4th with Tom Mirenda Zooming in all the way from Hawaii with a new talk on his African Orchid Adventure – if you missed it or want to refresh your memory – this recording is once again available from the growing video archive within the Members Only section of our website, as well as from our SFOS YouTube Channel.
And coming up September 1st we will hear a talk from Jason Miller about his genetic diversity research efforts to conserve the “Ram’s head” orchid (Cypripedium arietinum) – Jason was the recipient of the 2019 SFOS Orchid Research grant which helped support him in doing this graduate work in Dr. Lisa Grubisha’s lab at UWGB (University of Wisconsin Green Bay).
So please RSVP via our website (www.orchidsanfrancisco.org) and get the Zoom link & password for the meeting. Please send your show and tell pictures or short video clips by email to Lynne Murrell (email@example.com) by the day before the meeting – though sooner is of course better to give her more time to prepare! You can help Lynne optimize the show and tell experience by selecting your top 3 plants to share so we have time to get to everyone’s contributions - label your photo files – or include the names for her to do it for you – and try to include one picture of the flower and one of the plant including a coin or ruler or hand in one of them to help us judge the size. particularly for miniatures.
Do you have plants to donate or sell at our Members’ Plant Sale on October 16-18th?
Faye, John (Rushworth) and I will be coordinating this, but need your help with:
1) Plants (email me your plant list, the price you want, & photos if possible by Oct 1st) , and
2) Volunteers to help us organize and run the sale (again please email me).
We have gotten access to use the parking lot atShelldance Orchids in Pacifica (thank you owner Nancy Davis!), and will set up for pre-sales online, as well as a system for reservations - for pre-scheduled appointment times for plant purchase pick-ups. We will have appropriate COVID-19 precautions in place (masks, handwashing / and use of gloves, social distancing onsite and other measures to make this effort / event safe as possible).
The Show Committee met and decided to postpone the next meeting until January – send me an email to be included in future event planning meetings, or for more information about what’s involved.
If you have not yet logged into the Members Only section of our website – note that there are also special announcements posted there about plant sales by vendors or members – we are doing our best not to send out emails to you more than once a week – but balancing that with the goal of informing you the best we can of these offers in a timely manner. If you want to post an announcement – please give us at least a week's notice to allow us enough time to prepare and bundle these communications appropriately.
Lauren Iverson and I are still interviewing members – creating member profiles, as well as compiling the history of SFOS.
Do you have photos of SFOS functions, members, or stories to contribute? Do you want to be included? Email us your written biography and set up time for an audio and/or video recording.
Tips for the upcoming
For those who are unfamiliar with Zoom, it is a video chat application you can download and set up ahead of time, or just follow the link below at the time of the meeting.
Rather than just calling in, everyone is encouraged to either use the weblink or download the Zoom app ahead of the meeting to be able to better see and share the video content.
We will ask people to do “show and tell” - so plan to have either your plants nearby to share live pics or take/send pics ahead of time to share.

SFOS Board Meeting Minutes
August 10th, 2020
Attended: Jeff Harris, Erik Sayle, Faye Rabino, John Russell McCallen, Christian Neitro, Lynne Murrell, Dave Hermeyer, John Rushworth (invited guest); (excused/unable to attend: Stuart Menaker and Lauren Iversen)
Zoom Board meeting called to order: 7:07 pm
President's update: Jeff
Embezzlement Case Update: we are continuing to get repayment from Jack on schedule - and next hearing date is scheduled for Sept 9, 2020.
Treasurer’s report: Faye
Monthly (July 2020) finance report presented by Faye
Erik moved to endorse the monthly finance report and Lynne seconded the motion, which passed unanimously by verbal vote.
VP’s update: Erik - Programming Updates:
Sept 1 - Jason Miller (2019 SFOS research grant recipient: Genetic diversity of Cypripedium arietinum within Wisconsin)
Remaining schedule still to be confirmed by Erik - open to suggestions.
Oct 6 - potentially Christian on deflasking
John Russell could also do a short talk on relocating a collection or experience troubleshooting and setting up a new greenhouse
Nov 3 (Election Day!) - TBD - contact/consider/confirm:
Alan Koch - Gold Country Orchids?
Bill Thoms - Bulbophyllum expert (on the list of zoom-friendly presenters [Lynne sent out an email with the full list])
Fragrance judging - in search of an expert - perhaps Steve Frowine who wrote a book on “Fragrant Orchids”
Dec 1 - we will aim to provide “raffle item” (online nursery gift certificates?) for every member/attendee as with gift exchange - plant opportunity table in the past. (Post-meeting note - Jeff began contacting online orchid nurseries for gift certificate donations)
Chris Mende/Tony Wells from Tiny Jungle & Lets Talk Plants will continue providing $20 gift credits in lieu of an opportunity table
POE 2021 - show committee - kick off meeting will be next Monday (Aug 17), 2020 (RSVP online as well), though we may not know until Nov-Dec from SF Park & Rec if POE will be possible next year, the topic will be: planning for an online member plant sale perhaps later this year - and longer term transition to a new socially distanced event when possible (propose to aim for July 2021 when OITP would have been, but not conflicting with Flower Piano, etc)
Membership update: (Jeff for Lauren)
Welcomed new 7 members at Aug 4 meeting: Nancy Tristan (Ventura), John Rushworth, Miquel Banket (Supporting Membership from Oakland), David Anderson, Cheri Wagner (Santa Cruz - SCOS Newsletter Editor and Webmaster), Tyler Currey (Portland - VP OOS), Cecil Bullard (Fresno) (and note two more joined Aug 10 - Judy Hatz as individual, as well as Linda Dawson (as a Household))
Confirmed follow up topic from last month that we will not change membership dues. It’s been $25 for a long time, but we want to be sensitive about raising it now, during a time when so many people are struggling and also cannot offer POE tickets for the higher level sponsorship benefits if there is no in-person event. We could explore alternative approaches - gifting memberships is now available and in future multi-year packages could be part of a membership drive - other ideas welcome.
August 4th meeting headcount (almost 100 RSVPs; ~15 people participated in show & tell; ~66 people showed up for the meeting on Zoom - 13 were guests and 3 lapsed members - rest were current paid members).
Newsletter editor update: (Christian) - reminder to submit contributions including classified ads by the 15th of the month for target e-distribution of newsletter on the 20th of the month; noted he may cut back on size by not including all show & tell photos since they are also on the social media pages and on “members only” part of the website
Follow up discussion re:
Membership Drive - John will continue to work on this with Lauren - but current new member rate is as good as ever was
Content creation / curation for web/social media vs “private” value for members - not felt to be urgent need
Online Sales? (Books, T-shirts, member plants …?) - not really needed right now
Bay Area Orchid Growing book sale: promotion or ad campaign? Lynne shared “ad” with other Bay Area societies
Online member plant sale Oct 16-18: In-person, distanced pickup is possible; easier to post lists and sell at the event rather than full e-commerce on the site. We discussed shortening to one or two days (versus full 3 days) depending on interest; (post meeting note: Jeff called and confirmed dates with Nancy Davis, now can proceed with planning).
New Business: None
Next Board Meeting: Monday, Sept 7th - Zoom Meeting to be scheduled to start at 7PM
Meeting adjourned at 8:33 pm.
