Happy New Year! As we welcomed in 2019, I am quite sure that a few of us made at least one or more resolutions or declarations regarding the goals we want to accomplish this year. Whether that resolution was to eat healthier, get fit, or one of countless other possibilities, we are cognizant of the fact that the new year has the potential to turn out much differently from the previous year based on the decisions that we make. As a student of the School of Professional Studies, you have made the decision to pursue a higher level of education. This journey is not for the faint of heart. It requires a key ingredient – FOCUS.
To "focus" is to place an emphasis on or to have a clear perception of something specific. The multiple New York Times bestselling author, Jack Canfield says that, “Successful people maintain a positive focus in life no matter what is going on around them. They stay focused on their past successes rather than their past failures, and on the next action steps they need to take to get them closer to the fulfillment of their goals rather than all the other distractions that life presents to them.” The year 2019 is here and in full swing. Rest assured that life will happen. Distractions and challenges will come. However, we must keep our focus. Let us make 2019 the best year yet.

A word from our Dean
Nominations for the SPS Student of the Month are now being accepted.
Faculty and advisors, we want to recognize our students for their exemplary academic efforts and community service. Nominations must include the Student Name, Degree Program/Level, and a brief statement explaining why they should be considered as a candidate. Students and faculty, would you like to nominate a fellow SPS staff or faculty member, as well? Please email all submissions or questions to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Meet the Mission is organized and sponsored by the Office of Mission and Ministry, under the leadership of Sr.Walter Maher, and is held every September.
On Meet the Mission Day, UIW students and staff engage the greater San Antonio community with service. Since the first MtM Day, the event has grown to see over 200 members of the UIW community deploy to over 25 Community Partner sites to perform service projects on a single day.
This year, the 13th annual Meet the Mission Day will take place on Friday, September 14th, 2018, and we will start and end the day at the McDermott Convocation Center in two waves beginning at 7:30 am.
This is a great opportunity to connect with other members of the UIW family and community.
For more information about this event or to sign-up as a participant, please visit www.uiw.edu/meetthemission.
