director's column
Hello Friends of WRM! The holiday season and impending new year foster a natural time for reflection and what a year it has been! In some ways, 2020 seems to have flown by so quickly, while in others, this passage of time has been more arduous. Amidst it all, I have felt a deep sense of gratitude for our school as we have leaned into building strength as a community while embracing the care and concern for others that has been a necessary part of our journey through the pandemic. Part of White Rock Montessori’s mission statement is to prioritize personal and social responsibility and this year has given us many opportunities to put this into practice. I am filled with a deep appreciation for your steadfast support of our school and each other! As is our tradition, this year’s Annual Giving Campaign kicked off in conjunction with #GivingTuesday - a global generosity movement that unleashes the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and their world. WRM students also participated by raising money through our first ever Jumpathon where they ‘jumped’ to raise money for our COVID-19 Tuition Relief fund! Each day’s activities culminated with Coach Teddy’s ice jump challenge, which was a popular motivator for many of our students. This, along with Spirit Week, fostered signficant enthusiasm and school spirit. What a beautiful week of kindness and community support! WRM’s 2019-2020 Annual Report is published in this newsletter. With the support of many, we were able to finish the year in a stable financial position. This is the result of many years of hard work by the WRM Board of Directors establishing a strong reserve to tie us over during times of unexpected hardship...and this pandemic has certainly met that criteria! Your continued financial support is critical for our school’s sustainability. Please note the following from 2019-2020: ~86% of our overall budget and 100% of our operating budget came solely from tuition and ~70% of our expenses paid faculty/staff salaries and benefits. Both of these statistics are in alignment with best practices for independent schools. This highlights how important your tuition dollars are, not only to us as a school, but also to providing our faculty and staff with a wage that is reflective of their extraordinary skills and talents. As you will also notice, Covid-19 expenses took a chunk out of last year’s revenues. Thankfully, WRM has been able to access some grant monies to offset these expenses (and those costs for the 2020-2021 school year were significantly higher!). However, one of our biggest expenses has been offering situational tuition relief to those families who have been financially impacted by COVID-19. Any gift you can give to the Annual Campaign will help offset that cost, support the long-term sustainability of our school, and provide a loving embrace to our families who have been hit the hardest by the economic downturn as a result of COVID-19. Read on to learn more about WRM’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative and the opening of our new Middle School building. As you can see, this has been quite a year! Through it all, the WRM faculty and staff have been unwavering in their commitment to our school and your children. I can say with confidence and full honesty that they are the most outstanding educators in the region and we are extremely fortunate to have them. I hope you enjoy this newsletter. As we near the Winter Break, I send you wishes for a holiday season filled with gratitude for what is most important to us and a sense of comfort during this turbulent time. Your families are on my mind and in my heart during the holiday season and throughout the year. Warmly,
Since the pandemic first hit nine months ago, many WRM faculty/staff members worked without a break straight through to the Early-Fall Break. For many, that time away was a critical component to address ongoing burnout.
On average, White Rock Montessori faculty/staff members have increased their work hours by 50% in order to meet the needs of our students during COVID-19.
did you know? WRM faculty and staff support the school's COVID-19 Social Contract for the peace of mind it provides while working on campus.

It is their pleasure to serve WRM families each day whether on campus or from home during this unprecedented time.
did you know? In the past nine months, WRM has invested over $150,000 to meet the needs of our school in order to operate in the midst of the pandemic. These funds were used to create classrooms for our smaller cohorts, purchase sanitation products and personal protective equipment, and invest in the necessary technology for smooth curricular implementation.
new middle school building The new Middle School building is complete (it really has been a busy year)! It truly is a sight to see and its completion is the culmination of a 25-year vision for our sweet school. We look forward to hosting an Open House as soon as the pandemic allows.
WRM’s Faculty/Staff DEI Committee has successfully launched phase 1 of our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative. The DEI Initiative has been a work in progress for several years at our school and this group of dedicated professionals somehow found the time to support this phase of the school's plan during this truly important time in our country’s history! We are deeply grateful for their effort, as well as the patience and gently urging of WRM’s parent community. This enhancement to our school's curriculum has been long-awaited and is a significant first step in this important initiative at WRM.
