Busy Fall Ahead
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the fall statewide meeting on Thursday, October 17th at the Star Award winning FOPS project at UNC-Charlotte. I'm volunteering at the CPNI Baden, NC workshop and look forward to the comradery with my colleagues providing continued support for the small towns of NC. If you haven't participated in a CPNI workshop yet, I encourage you to sign up in the near future. Workshops are a great way to get to know CPN members, make local town connections, and provide volunteer services to communities in our great state of NC.
A Note From The President
Enjoy Our Newsletter makeover
I hope all of my CPN colleagues have had great summer vacations with friends and family.
I want to thank all the members who took the time to provide CPN with feedback in our recent association survey (if you haven't taken it yet, you can do so by clicking here). You spoke, and we listened. We took your newsletter suggestions and gave the THE RESOURCE a makeover. This digital newsletter is focused on the outstanding professionals who make CPN what it is and is interactive throughout. We hope you like the new format and appreciate any comments or suggestions you have to improve it. This is your CPN RESOURCE.
Dues renewals are coming to close and CPN remains strong as ever. If you haven't renewed your dues, it's not too late. Call CPN staff at 336-379-0603 to get squared away.
Hope to see you at an upcoming CPN event!

Q: Tell us about your company:
A: Thomas & Hutton’s story began in 1946 with the collaboration of former US Army Corps of Engineers Officers, Hue Thomas and Joe Hutton, in their start-up engineering firm in Savannah, GA. Our founders envisioned tremendous opportunities in transforming the landscape and well-being of our communities by providing professional and consulting services to municipalities in the region, as well as private entities seeking to develop in the area. Today, Thomas & Hutton stands as one of the most well-respected and established multidisciplinary firms in the region, branching out to nine regions throughout the Southeast in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
Q: What sets your firm apart from others?
A: Titles on business cards can be quite deceiving. At Thomas & Hutton, we’re more than just your typical consultants, project managers, engineers, landscape architects, surveyors, and analysts. We are passionate in the work we do. Our people are compelling storytellers, innovators, artists, visionaries, explorers, and at the core – excellent problem-solvers. We bring your visions to life. At Thomas & Hutton, our people excel in creating solutions that lead to success.
Q: Favorite project you have worked on?
A: A current project that we are working on that will probably be one of my favorites when it is complete is the I-277 Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge that will provide a safe path from the Rail Trail in South End to the Stonewall. This project will be an iconic bridge in Charlotte and will provide connectivity to the Center City from South End.
Q: Why did you join CPN?
A: After more than one person suggested that I joined, I attended the golf event and realized that this organization was more about relationships and collaboration rather than selling services. Some of my favorite people were already members, so for me it was an easy decision. .
Q: Fun Facts About Mike:
A: I can speak Spanish fairly well, a little French (can read most things), and a smaller bit of German.
A: While in college, I was Mr. Wuf at NC State University - GO PACK!
A: Trying to visit all 20 Spanish speaking countries (plus Puerto Rico). A third of the way there!
A: I have 3 children: Emma Grace (17), Mac (15), and Fincher (8)

Summer is quickly coming to an end as momentum builds in CPNI!
We have been able to continue the great work started by Doug Burns last year and , in conjunction with our partner NCGrowth, completed a draft checklist, resource guide and tips to make our workshops even better and to consolidate information in one place for team leaders and members.
In September Julie McLaurin will lead a team of volunteers to the town of Badin. This will be a great experience for Julie who has family roots in Badin. We also have Whiteville, NC with team leader Marc Momsen coming up November 14-15, 2019. Doug Burns and I visited Whiteville in late August and toured the town with the town manager Sean Martin. They have lots of exciting things going on , including a new town hall and a bypass coming through, but still a need to revitalize some downtown buildings.
Looking ahead to 2020 we are talking with the mayor of Troy and hope to visit with her in person in late September or early October. Troy has an interesting part of town that is a segregation era African American community that had its own business district. The mayor is interested in preserving this important history. Under my leadership we will aim to have one more town workshop in spring 2020. We are working to identify that potential town now.
If you have any interest in volunteering on the workshop in Whiteville or Troy please reach out to me or CPN staff.
Don’t forget to come out an support CPN and CPNI at the golf tournament and clay shoot! They are both a fun time and support a great cause.

Q: How did you get started in the industry?
A: It was the right place at the right time. I had just graduated from college and was nannying for a family for the summer. Their neighbor and I started talking one day and she mentioned her husband was looking for a marketing coordinator. I brought her my resume, interviewed and got the job as marketing coordinator for a landscape architecture and civil engineering firm. The rest is history.
Q: What sets your firm apart from others?
A: We build for people who Expect More. This is what drives us every day. We expect more from one another, our clients, and our partners.
Q: Favorite project you have worked on?
A: I have had the pleasure of working on some fun project pursuits, but the most rewarding was with a previous firm and the pursuit of New Belgium Brewing’s Asheville facility. It was a year long “dating” period with many meetings and fun opportunities to be creative. It was the first ground breaking that I have participated in where beer was served.
Q: Why did you join CPN?
A: Janet Brooks! She was always talking about the organization and all the great things going on. She was the one that got me involved. I am always looking to expand my network in the AEC industry, so this was a no brainer. What I have come to enjoy is the smaller size of the group as well as the service opportunities of CPNI. .
Q: Fun Facts About Sara:
A: I volunteer on the Theatre Charlotte Board and Broadway Ball Chair; the Metrolina Minority Contractors Association Steel Toe Boot Awards Chair, and Congregations for Kids SocialLight.
A: In my spare time I love to work in my yard or shop around for unique finds.
A: I have a 4.5 year old, Whit. If you follow me on Instagram you will see he keeps me on my toes.
A: I have a hound rescue, Seager and a Catahoula leopard rescue, Dixie.
A: I just finished reading Strengths Based Leadership and Strengths Based Parenting. They are based on the Gallup Strengths Finders test. Both are very eye opening. I highly recommend taking Strengths Finders and reading all the associated books – it will change the way you view yourself and those around you.

Dear friends and colleagues,
As you may or may not know, I’m on the November ballot for my local election - Harrisburg Town Council. I’m excited about the challenges this campaign faces, especially with a new baby!
This is a tough race, there are 9 candidates for four open seats, and all four incumbents are running for re-election! I need your support to win!
Unfortunately, campaigns cost money, and as much as it’s embarrassing for me, I’m asking for your support. Any amount helps, $5, $10, $20 from a couple of people will go a long way towards yard signs, mailers, and handouts. For those of you who donate more than $50 (thank you!), please provide me with your address and occupation so I can comply with campaign finance laws.
You can find my website here: ianpatrick2019.com. Click on donate in the upper right hand corner to be taken to a PayPal site (this is a secure and encrypted site). If you wish, you may also send a check to my address at 5701 Manchester Avenue, Harrisburg, NC 28075. If the check is a joint account, please notate which individual is donating (more campaign finance laws).
I greatly appreciate your support! Feel free to forward this email to anyone at all who you think would support me.
