Kia ora, welcome to the fourth edition of our on-line school newsletters for 2017 2016.
TERM FOUR 2017: issue no 4
Kia ora. Another year comes to an end and in this final week of school we held the Junior Prizegiving on the Monday followed by three days of Junior Intensives. It was a wonderful week of celebration and fun. It was a great way to end another good year for Rītana. So, while we begin to think of holidays and farewelling this year we'd like to share some thinking around the Tūranganui ā-Kiwa Kāhui Ako, the Gisborne community of Learning. Here are links to the Facebook and website for this initiative; Facebook - the Turanganui-a-Kiwa Facebook page is live and operational, please follow and visit the page here https://www.facebook.com/gisbornecol/ Website - the website is still under some minor construction, but is live and viewable here www.gisbornecol.co.nz The Tūranganui ā-Kiwa Kāhui Ako is a community of at least 25 of the total schools in Gisborne who are committed to working with each other in new ways that benefit ALL of the learners in all of our schools. Please follow the links and this initiative on Facebook. On another note, thank you for a wonderful year, please enjoy the summer break with, friends and family. We look forward to seeing you all in the new year. Ngā mihi o te kirihemete, ngā mihi o te tau hoki! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
BEREAVEMENT - MRS ETHEL WHAREHINGA (NAN) It is with enormous sadness that we farewelled Nan during the Term 3 Holiday Break. “Nan” has been a quiet and unassuming member of the staff at Rītana since 2004. In the early days she was making the long drive from Whakaki daily, as she worked part-time doing computer administration for staff and students, particularly changing passwords for those who forgot. She willingly gave up extra hours of her own time to help out at school, and it was because of this that she became invaluable to the operations of the Kapa Haka teams. Nan spent many hours organising the dress uniforms to make sure the teams were looking their best, and was uncompromising about standards, knowing that her insistence was absolutely necessary to instilling a great team culture as ambassadors for the school. Nan remained a key part of the ICT department, gently bringing issues and ideas to our attention while bringing the same expectations of care and respect into our classes as she walked through. It is her little chuckles and sense of humour that we most miss, attributes she retained until the end. Her self-effacing style was grounded in a deep sense of connectedness and care, both for the wider Lytton family and particularly for those in need. The school has lost a treasure, but she will always remain in our memories. Arohanui, Nan. More than our colleague by Bubbles Reedy More than our colleague Nanny Dear The time you spent with us I account for here In our daily comings and goings For the best part of twelve years You were our sweet Nanny Dear More than our colleague Nanny Dear So blessed so lucky Have we been here in Our Computing Office Lulubelle, Maurice, Jason and me For we have been part of your family And enjoyed, no one can deny Our times together over dishes and kai Custard squares And afternoon tea. Nanny Dear You loved to hear Of our mokopuna milestones year after year ~of their smiles and squawking, walking and talking, Thank you for taking the time to care Our sister in teaching Our koka in life Our Beautiful Nanny Dear Nanny Dear Where shall the children now go. To learn to dress ~ just so. We are at a loss We are truly at a loss.. For you were their quiet nanny boss Expectations higher than high Stockings young lady And son, that tie. Nanny Dear Our teacher, nay our friend, Cousin Lulu comforts This is not the end Just a pause A going to pave a way for we all It is certain Pass away and will meet again Nanny Dear Some sunny day.

FUTURE FLYERS
Eagle Flight Training School has arrived in Gisborne, and the aviation bug has hit some Lytton High School students. Careers Advisor, Craig Wilkie took a group of interested Year 9 & 10 students out to the airport to check it all out. The aim of the visit was for local students to become familiar with Eagle Flight School's operations and meet some key people in the organisation. The students were able to sit in an air trainer and were shown the flight instruments. The students were also given information from some of the flight instructors about pilot training and future plans for Eagle Flight School Meanwhile, two Year 12 students, Stan Bodle & Ashley Honig, recognised by the Principal for being quiet achievers, were awarded a once in a lifetime experience with a flight around Gisborne, even getting to hold the controls and learn to fly!
NEW TECH BLOCK
As the year comes to an end, so too is the construction of our new Tech Block at Lytton. This amazing new space will house the Technical Studies classes, including Engineering & Woodwork. It also has breakout spaces and state of the art learning spaces. An official opening will be held early in 2018.
STUDENTS VISIT MINDLAB
Mr Hooper’s Year 10 Kia Manawanui Science class has been focussing on Problem Solving and Design during Term 4. This involved 3 visits to Gisborne Mind Lab where students built and coded their own robotic devices and were challenged to complete obstacle courses and play robotic table soccer. Students relished the opportunity to create - a true display of Ako, Aroha and Aspire.
year 9 & 10 pool day
Year 9 & 10s had a fun day at the Olympic Pools on the 10th of November. Lots of skills and confidence building, and team work! Looks like a great day!
trADES ACADEMY
2017 EIT Trades Academy Graduation
Congratulations to Sophie Easton, Matekino Puhia, Pearl Hape, Rosie Hellesoe, Mary-Jane Hooper-Wanoa, Dakora Tihore, Nicole Greening, and Nga-Ataa-Rangi Irwin who completed their Reader Reward Cards by reading ten books this term! Christmas is almost here! Remember Whānau, you are all welcome to issue books under your child’s name over the holidays.Make sure you and your child issue some before the library closes on Thursday 14 December. Overdue books(regardless of how late they are), will always be welcomed back to our library with no frowns or fees attached. On a personal note, after 16 years as Lytton’s Librarian I am leaving to begin another journey. It has been an honour and a privilege to work with the staff and students of Lytton, an incredibly rewarding job, with a lot of laughs, light bulb moments and once or twice tears. I wouldn’t change a minute of it. Libraries and books are a true passion of mine and it has been my mission to pass on my love and the importance of both. There’s something about libraries, they’re good for your soul and the fact that doing something you love raises your results as well… treat them like the taongas they are. Read on Ritana, I’ll miss you.Sally D Libraries provide music for the heart, knowledge for the mind, fuel for the imagination. Libraries change lives for the better. Sidney Sheldon
Top 10 Books of 2017 I personally recommend American Assassin by Flynn, Vince American Assassin by Flynn, Vince Tokyo Ghoul by Ishida, Sui A Child Called 'It' by Pelzer, Dave Norse Mythology by Gaiman, Neil Māori Designs, Flower Designs (adult colouring in books) My Story : A Child Called It , The Lost Boy , A Man Named Dave By Pelzer, Dave Patient Zero by Maberry, Jonathan Bite Of The Mango by Kamara, Mariatu et. al Fault In Our Stars by Green, John Orphan X by Hurwitz, Gregg

EUGENE'S CORNER
We take photos as a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Some of the pictures themselves tell their story and they say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some of these ought to be preserved, for in years to come, you can return to these moments and reminiscence with one another and what each is doing in the afterlife of school. Softball A Boys Gigh / Lytton composite junior softball team, went through the National Secondary Tournament undefeated. As this team went as a composite side they were unable to play for the top 3 positions. so finished 4th overall. Treyson hikitapua-Wilson was named MVP of the tournament, playing at pitcher, he shut most teams out when it mattered. He was called upon to clean up in the big games, both on the mound and at bat. Coach Ray Noble said ”I could have taken anyone out of the team and filled their position, apart from Treyson. There was no substitute for his talent, as a pitcher, short stop and batter. His batting was on fire all tournament ." Thoughts from the recent Junior Sports Week: Surfing Riding a wave is a breathless experience, every wave has a different feeling. All I could feel was the combined feelings of uselessness and exhaustion that come from flapping around on a surfboard! Shortly after 'hands on the board', I lost my balance and hit the water. To bring a long story short I had many failed attempts, but on what could have been anywhere between my 15th and 50th, I got to my feet. When it was time to get out, Frank asked me, “So, was it worth it? Was it worth all the paddling?” All I could answer was “YES!!” “And it’s worth the turtle rolls?” “Totally worth the turtle rolls.” Andie Te Nahu Kayaking “I had a great experience going down to the river kayaking.I may have flipped a few times and it is an amazing sport, but in the end it was fun.I wish we had a longer time” Bal Kohere “I enjoyed kayaking because it was fun to be out on the boat paddling with my friends. Luckily I didn’t tip. I recommend more people give it a go” Maisie Hiko Softball …"I enjoyed the Softball"… "I got better at it as the day went on"… "The drills were mean"..."It was fun"…. "Might take it up"..."I reckon that we should have softball for 3 days"…"I wanted to give other things a go as well"… Kī-o-Rahi "I've played Kī-o-Rahi before"…"It was very hot"…"It was good to mix in with other schools”… "Can we have this in Year 11?"… "It was a fun day"… "Thrilling, I wanted to do all of them"… Tennis "I like the tennis"..."It was hot though"…"Enjoyed everything"…"It was fun"…"Learnt games that I never had before"..."I think we could have had more leisure time to play with friends"… Kayaking "Kayaking was harder than I thought"…"found it hard to get the balance"…"Rather do kayaking in the morning for longer time"…"Lots of fun"… Surfing "Loved the Surfing"…"It was really fun surfing, I am not a great surfer but I got good experience in trying something new"…"I enjoyed it nothing needs to change"…"It was fun"..."Perhaps try a variety of other sports like Fly Fishing and I’ll be into diving"…"Well organised"…"Cool, amazing"…"Like to see Stand Up Paddle Board next time"..."Perfect day, I could be at the beach… all day"… Many thanks to the Go Buses and Hindmarsh Bus Services who transported us to and from school. To the Teachers, Parents, Student Volunteers and Coaches, heartfelt thanks to you all for your care, motivation and nurturing of our Lytton athletes. We would not have had the successes we have without your input. To those working behind the scenes, doing the ground work, in preparation for week in week out competitions and tournament travel , laundry, provision of kai etc. your contributions have been immeasurable, thank you. To the Warehouse, Bunnings. Countdown, Kevin Hollis Glass, COGs, Lion Foundation, NZCT, Gisborne Rentals and Amber Dental, thank you for your continued support and assistance to our Lytton community. I read somewhere that Christmas presents can be divided into two classes – those you don’t like and those you don’t get.I hope you get the sort of presents you like. May I take this opportunity of wishing you one and all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.
