Summer 2022! Programs Conferences news
Message from Tim Spindler, Executive Director Librarians are facing unprecedented challenges in their ability to manage collections. A colleague recently commented that they felt libraries are facing some of the biggest challenges in their more than thirty years of library experience. The divisive politics in our country are fomenting this trend. Recently, there was one of the most disturbing events where Proud Boys showed up at a San Francisco area library in an apparent attempt to disrupt the drag queen story hour in the children’s department.
John Chrastka, founder of EveryLibrary, has noted a change in the nature of these challenges. He is quoted in a recent Library Journal article (March 14, 2022). He said, “I think that there’s an important difference between…challenges which are part of a dialogue in the community about what’s appropriate to be on the shelves, what shelves are they appropriate to be on, and that cadence of challenges that are coming from a place of good conscience, a place of good intent, that are focused on using the policies and the procedures of the library to have that kind of small-d democratic dialogue, but the ones we’re very focused on here at EveryLibrary are the ones that have changed from being a conversation about content to performative and politicized events, essentially power-building events.†Libraries need to prepare for these challenges.
Libraries can be prepared for this by ensuring they have appropriate policies and procedures in place. The Nassau Library System, the Suffolk Cooperative Library System, and LILRC have provided opportunities for directors and staff to learn about what can be done and provide information on model policies. Attorney Stephanie Adams from the Ask the Lawyer service, working with PULISDO and ESLN, has produced a model collection management policy libraries can use to implement in their libraries. This policy template and other information can be found on the Ask the Lawyer site.
The second tenet in the ALA Code of Ethics is “We uphold the principles of intellectual freedom and resist all efforts to censor library resources.†Librarians need to stand strong in supporting free and open access to content. Long Island librarians are fortunate that there are a plethora of resources available to them and can find support in all of the local organizations. Please take advantage of them and also take advantage of the resources on the ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom site.

MEMBER SERVICES SPOTLIGHT! The Empire Archival Discovery Cooperative (EmpireADC) is a discovery tool and repository for EAD encoded finding aids. EmpireADC helps connect researchers with physical archival materials in repositories across New York State. New York State’s cultural, historical and educational institutions are home to archival, special and historical collections that document a wide range of topics, people and organizations. Collections range in size from one item to many boxes of items. EmpireADC brings together descriptions of these collections - called “finding aids†- to connect you with the resources you need and the organizations that have them. By searching our finding aids, or guides to archival collections, you can discover relevant materials held by a variety of libraries, archives and cultural heritage organizations.
For more information on EmpireADC and other Member Repository Services, visit the LILRC website Member Services page.

MEET LILRC'S FALL 2022 INTERN: REBECCA DANIEL!
LILRC is excited to welcome Rebecca Daniel of Port Jefferson Station as our Fall 2022 intern. Rebecca is a Psychology Major at Stony Brook University and will graduate in May 2023. While she is interested in becoming a lawyer, Rebecca has always spent a lot of time reading and in the library and she is eager to know more about the library and its workings. Rebecca has had a lifelong interest in reading and in libraries, and as a teen, she participated in Battle of the Books and Summer Reading. Her hobbies include cooking, video games, and painting.
During her internship, Rebecca will learn about communications, outreach, program coordination, and more while working with LILRC’s Communications and Outreach Coordinator. She will also visit Long Island libraries to learn about the wide variety of opportunities in the library profession while shadowing and assisting librarians. For more information, visit LILRC's Diversity Intern Program page or email program coordinator, Sally Stieglitz at sstieglitz@lilrc.org
