FROM THE PRESIDENT
Annual Presentation Afternoon The Presentation awards afternoon was graced with glorious weather and a full Club house in attendance, Making me a very proud president in distributing well-deserved awards and recognizing the remarkable achievements of our fellow anglers. Setting New Records Iam always impressed every year we keep catching new club records and once again the clubs have tumbled with 3 very impressive catches 2 by our juniors first being Jayden Millauro13 years old with his 68.8kg Yellowfin on 37kg line during the Tuna slam, then we had 11 year old Hussan with his once in a life time fish a massive 120g Southern Bluefin Tuna on 24kg both these records our new club records and NSW records then we had Mitch Liddall catching a Blue shark on 8kg which pulled the scales down at a nice 160kg. Upcoming Events: As we look ahead, coming very soon is - the Geoff Woolley Memorial Monster Mako Tournament. We have moved this tournament to align with the start of the season opener on September 16th and 17th. This event, coinciding with the first round of the central zone, promises a thrilling amalgamation of competition and camaraderie. The history of this weekend is rich with extraordinary catches, including sizeable makos, large Tuna, and even massive Blue marlins weighing over 200kg. I urge all of you to seize this opportunity, secure your leave passes, and immerse yourselves in an unforgettable weekend of fishing action. On the political front we have had good feedback from Mark Banasiak From the shooters Fishers party and correspondence from Kelly Sloanne who have put our case to the members of NSW parliament and have stressed that our concerns over the 2 options is not an option and that we want option 3 to stay on the current wharf and the extension to go around us. But we still need your help with signatures so please take the page from this magazine get your family friends to sign every signature counts to help save your club. Wind farms we have the extreme plan by federal parliament to place a windmill farm at the carpark in Port Stephens Yes that’s right in the middle of the car park there is a online petition plus a hard copy, again you can download from Newcastle Port Stephens website. Please get active for to long fisherman have been to slow in acting on caring for the future of your sport this is real this is being rushed through parliament, but you can make a difference by collecting signatures. Enjoy Tightlines President Glenn Wright

Junior Fishing School Holiday fun During the school holidays, our Club organized a fun event to encourage kids to get outdoors and enjoy fishing. We launched a photo competition, offering exciting prizes for the five best fishing pictures. The rules were simple: catch a fish, take a photo, and stand a chance to win! I am thrilled to announce that we received some fantastic photos from enthusiastic participants. It was excellent to see the beaming faces of these young anglers, proud of their fishing accomplishments. Aron made a splash with his impressive Kingfish caught while fishing alongside his dad. Ivy wowed us with a diverse collection of catches, displaying her fishing skills and enjoyment of quality time with her dad. Finn also joined the competition with a variety of catches and even shared a photo of his delicious dinner, made from his successful catch. Antonio, while on holiday, had a blast reeling in some fantastic barramundi. Tim Molnar surprised us all with a rare cow shark caught during a night fishing session off Long Reef. And lastly, Alex showed off his prized Kingfish caught right inside the harbor. Kids fishing is an incredible sport that offers a host of benefits. Not only does it boost self-confidence, but it also fosters social interaction and teamwork when kids fish with friends or family through fishing clubs. Communicating and working as a team become second nature. In addition to gaining self-esteem through catching fish and handling gear, kids also learn the value of patience and focus as they wait for the perfect bite. Fishing helps them develop a keen awareness of the environment, learning about aquatic ecosystems, fish habitats, and even weather forecasts and ocean currents while reveling in the great outdoors. As fishing involves physical activities such as casting, reeling, and walking along the shore, it provides an excellent way to stay active while enjoying nature, away from screens and gadgets. The experience stimulates creativity and imagination, sparking the young minds to explore and envision underwater adventures. Fishing teaches sustainable practices, emphasizing responsible fishing and conservation, especially when kids participate in game fishing clubs like ours. Our tournaments strictly adhere to controlled rules, instilling valuable sportsmanship, and improving angling skills. The excitement and thrill of tournament fishing can create a lifelong passion for the sport. Joining a game fishing club also opens up the opportunity to win prizes, trophies, and even the chance to catch a record-breaking fish. So, I urge you to continue to give your kids the opportunity to increase their passion for fishing. GFAA runs a fantastic tournament for all juniors this is a national tournament based on points it runs from July 1st to the 30th june please see advertisement for details or contact myself for more information Karen Wright 042755 77 05 Karen@ibwconstructions.com
Long Distance Black Marlin Recapture With favourable environmental conditions and fantastic inshore fishing opportunities up and down the coast, the warmer months gave many boats and anglers the opportunity to target, catch and tag juvenile Black Marlin. With large numbers of fish being tagged, there was also a significant number of recaptures reported. So far 40 Black marlin recaptures have been reported for the 2022/23 season which is the highest recapture tally for the species in over 22 years! While many of the recaptures were fish caught close to where they were originally tagged, the program had some fantastic examples of long-distance movements. One of which features below: A game fish recapture form was submitted by a fish processor in the Philippines. The fishmonger had received a tag from a deckhand of an international longline vessel who had just returned from a long-distance fishing voyage throughout the Pacific Islands. During this trip, the commercial vessel managed to capture a tagged black marlin whilst fishing an area known as the Brumer Trench, which is well south of Baxter Harbour, Papua New Guinea. A quick search of the database found that the black marlin was tagged offshore of Seal Rocks, NSW. The fish was originally caught on 25 February 2023 by Sydney GFC member, Matt Millauro, who was fishing aboard his family's boat Sammi-Jay. When the fish was initially tagged it was estimated it to be 40kg. Upon recapture the fish weighed 58kg, highlighting an impressive growth rate. The fish spent only 79 days at liberty and was caught over 1247 nautical miles (~2310km) from its original release location. Each reported recapture contributes to our understanding of pelagic fish species. If you are lucky enough to recapture a tagged fish, please ensure you report it using our online recapture form which can be found in the comments below. The Game Fish Tagging Program is a great example of your fishing fees at work!
From Dr Julian Pepperell – GFAA Honorary Scientific Officer Recently there has been an influx of very small black marlin inside Hervey Bay. Mick Meiers and Tim Massurit put the word out that we would like some more heads from these micro marlin to add to the growing story of their origins (ie, when and possibly where were they spawned?). As a result, angler Dylan Betts caught this one, and got in touch with me. It measured 705mm short length (tip of lower jaw to tail fork) and weighed just 1.1kg. He will deliver the head to me and that will be sent, hopefully with some others of similar size, to the Fish Ageing Lab in Victoria to be aged by counting daily growth rings on their tiny otoliths (ear bones). Fourteen frozen heads of small black marlin from southern QLD were sent to the laboratory late last year and the otoliths were extracted in January. We are eagerly awaiting the results of the ageing of them. Marlin of this size, at this time of year, are highly unusual, so we look forward to finding out its actual birthday.
