2015 Year Book
Main Sponsor of Achill Rovers Youth Football.
Welcome to the 20th edition of the Achill Rover’s Yearbook. As always at this time of year we look back on the year gone by and look forward to the year ahead. While the club didn’t emulate the success of the previous year on the pitch, it was nonetheless a year to remember in many ways. It was a great honour for the club to participate in the 2013 Achill Sports Ball and to have the President of the FAI, Mr. Paddy McCaul attend. This event is again completely sold out this year and has become one of the most important events in the Achill calendar. In March the committee behind the Sports Ball formally established the Achill Sports Network. The aim of the new group is to promote all sports in the parish and to co-operate and help each other in any way possible. The seven founder clubs—Achill Rovers, Achill GAA, Achill Ladies GAA, Achill Bord na nOg, Achill Island Golf Club, Achill Boxing Club and the Achill Athletics Club have since been joined by Cumann Badoiri Acla. Together this group is capable of accomplishing great things and I have no doubt that although the population of our community is falling sharply, we will produce many fine athletes and teams in the coming years from all sports and they will represent the parish and county with distinction and hopefully some will go on to represent their country. ON THE PITCH On the football front, at the time of writing only our Under 12’s have brought in silverware. In November they beat Castlebar Celtic in a play-off to win their division. This team will play Fahy Rovers in the Mayo Trophy final in the coming weeks. With only this match to go, they have won all but one of their matches this season. So fingers crossed they can make it a league and cup double! It is fair to say that this team will bring many more trophies home in the coming years and we are lucky to have an incredible depth of talent at this age. In fact some of these players will still be U12 next season too. Our U18 team also had a good year and while no silverware was won they finished as runners-up in Division 1. There are also many fine players at this level and hopefully many will stay with us and join the men’s team in the next few years. We fielded 5 other boys teams at U13, U14, U15, U16 and U17 levels. And although there was no silverware at these levels either, there were some good performances and some great results along the way. There is every possibility that these teams will win a trophy or 2 in 2015. In my view, the footballing highlight for the club this year was the reintroduction of a girls team. We entered an U14 team in order to give a chance for as many girls as possible to get involved. In fact more than half the squad could have played at U12. It was also going to be tough for the team to compete with the more established clubs, even more so that they were in Division 1. The team has come on so much since the beginning of the season. So much so that 5 of the girls were called up to have trials for the Mayo U14s, U13s and U12s teams. We wish them the best training with the Mayo Squads over the next few months and have no doubt that this team will go from strength to strength next season. Our men's team won promotion in 2013 to Mayo Premier B Division. The team started well and were top of the table after 5 games. Unfortunately the league results didn't go well after that and by the midpoint of the league had fallen down to 4th place. The team never recovered and finished up in 6th place in a very close and competitive division. On the other hand the team did extremely well in the Cup, getting by Ballyhaunis Town, Ballina Town B, Newport Town, and Kilmore. The season hasn't finished yet and they have an exciting fixture in the Connaught Cup against top Galway side, Salthill Devon in the Valley in January. OFF THE PITCH Off the pitch Rovers had an extremely busy year. In May we got word that our application to RTEs John Murray Show was successful. The club was featured on the Underdogs section of the show which follows two teams each year. The show featured regular updates from the club and in June celebrity manager Packie Bonner arrived with RTE in tow to record a training session with the team. The event created a great buzz around the club. A huge crowd came to the Valley to meet the World Cup legend. It was a great pleasure for the club to have Packie visit us. He took time to speak to everyone that wanted to meet him and sign autographs for everybody too. He kindly agreed to doing a Questions and Answers session in Gielty’s that night as well. Gabriel Egan also took part in what was a wonderful insight into the World Cups of 1990 and 1994 and Euro 88. Later in June the media would descend on Achill again. BBC World Service were at the match against Mulranny Utd to interview the players that played soccer and gaelic each weekend. At the beginning of June we held another Achill Rovers Golf Classic. Despite some difficult weather conditions the event went well and I’d like to thank the Golf Club, the sponsors and the competitors who took part. We look forward to holding the event again in 2015. In July we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the founding of Achill Utd by Father Vincent O’Brien in 1974. To mark the occasion we had a festival of football in the Valley. First the children played in a very enjoyable blitz competition. That was followed by some Samba magic when Achill Rovers played Brazilian side Brazukas in a challenge match. At full time the score was level at 1-1 but Achill Rovers won a dramatic penalty shoot-out. Michael English became the hero of the day scoring the final penalty kick. The final part of the festivities finished with a “Legends” match between Achill Eagles and Achill Utd. The match was staged so that the argument of who was the better Achill team of the 70s and 80s could finally be put to bed. Achill Eagles finished on the right side of a 3-2 score-line. I would like to describe the winning goal as a fantastic display of one-touch football, however others have described my goal as a poxy rebound! Noel Cooney scored the other Eagles goals and Noel English scored United’s goals. The now annual FAI/Achill Rovers summer camp was also held in July. This year saw a record 120 children take part. This made it one of the largest in the West of Ireland. This year saw another rise in the number of girls taking part. Rua, the official mascot of the FAI also made an appearance to the delight of all the children. Big thanks to Tony Gralton for doing such an expert job organising the camp. July really was a busy month for the club. The month ended with the first Achill Bachelor of The Year competition in the Achill Head Hotel. A huge thank you goes out to the 7 lads that were brave enough to put their name forward, Michael Lavelle, Liam Gallagher, Kevin Lynch, Martin Doolan, Brian Lavelle, Bernard Briody and Ciaran Madden. A huge audience really enjoyed the night. Maeve Cafferkey hosted the event and put all the contestants through their paces. To say that she did a fantastic job would be an understatement. The show raised some badly needed funds, got many people involved and was thoroughly entertaining. Let’s hope it becomes a regular summer event in Achill. In September we staged the second Achill National Schools soccer competition. As last year the event was a huge success. 10 boys and 7 girls teams took part. The AstroTurf facility in Polranny is ideal for this competition. Large crowds attended all 7 match days. As the competition progressed, the improvement in the players became very evident. All four semi finals were settled by a single goal. The tournament finished with Tonragee winning the Andrew Forry Cup and Saula winning the Tonragee NS Centenary Cup. Michael Lavelle was awarded the Player of the Tournament prize and Aoife Gallagher won the girls award for the second year in a row. In November, Achill Rovers entered the Mayo Sevens League for the first time. The matches are played each Friday on the new AstroTurf facility in Milebush, Castlebar. After 4 matches they are sitting at the top of the league. Hopefully this team will be able to build on this and bring the form into next season’s men’s team. At the Mayo League Presentation Dinner in Castlebar, Achill Rovers were delighted that Patrick Francis Gallagher was inducted into the Mayo League Hall of Fame, becoming the second Achill man to receive the honour. Pee English received the award in 1995. In the citation, John Durkan, secretary of the Mayo League said that Patrick Francis was a true gentleman of the game, was involved as a coach for more than 40 years, had won 15 trophies as an Achill Rovers coach and approached each training session with the same enthusiasm as his first. He was a very popular winner on the night and congratulations flowed into the club from every corner of the county. Well deserved indeed. As you can imagine all the activities listed above could not be undertaken without the huge effort that’s put in by many, many people. Firstly I would like to thank our committee members for all their work. Every one of our committee went far beyond the call of duty this season. I want to thank all our coaches both new and old. Thank you to all our players at all levels. Thank you to the parents of all our players. Thanks to all our sponsors, the businesses that took ads in this yearbook and who sponsored the Golf Classic. Thanks to Canice O’Sullivan & Achill Island Golf Club for their support through our annual Golf Classic. Thanks to Johnny Cafferkey, The Pub, Dooagh, the main team sponsor and to Calvey’s of Achill for sponsoring the away kit. Thanks to Westnet for sponsoring our youth teams and to Michael Joe Scanlon for sponsoring the lotto tickets. Thanks to Sweeney’s Achill Sound for the bag packing days and to all those who took part and supported it. Thanks to the schools and their teachers. Thanks to all our partner clubs in the Achill Sports Network especially Bord na nOg with whom it feels like we are in contact almost daily during the season. Thanks to Ellen Cafferkey, SOLAS & CFAA. Thanks to Brian McNeill for refereeing all the schools games. Thanks to Coláiste Pobail Acla and Mayo VEC for allowing the use of the Astro Turf Pitch and to Marty Mangan and Coláiste Acla for the use of his premises in Dooega. Thanks to the people of Achill for their continued support throughout the years and all those who take part in our Weekly Lotto and Quiz Night and those who sell the tickets. Thanks to Eddie Gallagher for his dedication in producing the quiz, week in, week out. Thanks to Dermot Lavelle and Masterson’s for providing refreshments to visiting teams. Thanks to the clubs that we visited throughout the year for their hospitality. Thanks to the Mayo Association Football League who run soccer in Mayo with great professionalism and dedication and I’d like to thank them particularly for their help and support during the Underdogs programme and our anniversary celebrations. Thanks to the Mayo Schoolboys/Girls and Youths AFL. Thanks to the referees. Thanks to the Mayo News for publishing all the articles and photos. Thanks to The John Murray Show, Packie Bonner, RTE and BBC. Thanks to John “Taxi” McNamara, Michael Gallagher, Tony Grealis and James Gallagher for keeping the pitch and clubhouse in such good condition. Thanks to everybody who contributed to this yearbook. And last but certainly not least, thanks to the Valley tenants for the continuing use of their land. I hope I haven't left anybody out but if I have thank you too! On a much sadder note, the club said goodbye to two members who were taken away from us far to early. Gearoid Murphy died in September at only 6 years of age. Gearoid played in the schools competition in 2013 and played in the summer blitz last July. Despite his young age, Gearoid was an inspiration to everybody who met him. His infectious smile was his trademark which masked his terrible illness. Tony Gallagher was also taken from us before reaching his 40th birthday. Tony silently struggled with his illness for many years and like Gearoid always presented a happy and brave outlook on life. Born into a family with strong football ties, Tony followed the fortunes of Liverpool, Celtic and Achill Rovers in equal measure. Over the years Tony did countless tasks for Rovers which could never be repaid. Both will be sadly missed and we wish to extend the sympathies of the club to both families and to the families and friends of all those who passed away in the parish in 2014. Who knows what 2015 will bring, but the club is well placed to compete for prizes next year. The dedicated team behind our teams will ensure that every chance is given to every player to reach their full potential. In 2015 this team will be led by a new person at the helm as my tenure as Chairman comes to an end in January. I wish them well and promise them any assistance they may seek in the future. The past three years as chairman has flown by and I have thoroughly enjoyed the role. Personally I want to thank the committee, players, coaches and my family for the support that they have given me during this time. Finally, Happy Christmas to you all and hope you all have a prosperous New Year. Sean Molloy, Chairman

The 2013 Achill National Schools Soccer competitions proved to be extremely popular and the 2014 version was eagerly awaited by all the children in the parish. This year the number of teams increased. There were 2 more boys teams (Achill Sound and Tonragee both entered 2 teams) and an extra girls team (Achill Sound were on their own this year). The competition kicked off in mid September and just as last year the weather for the first few rounds was perfect. In the boys section (The Andrew Forry Cup), holders Dooagh and 2013 runners-up set the early pace and won all their group games. The girls competition (Tonragee NS Centenary Cup) was much tighter and there wasn't a lot between any of the teams. At the semi final stage, Dooagh and Bullsmouth were the hot favourites to advance to the final. Tonragee and Dookinella stood in their way. After two great semi finals it was the underdogs that got through, both games were settled on a 3-2 scoreline. Bullsmouth/Valley girls were the favourites and defending champions. They faced Tonragee and Saula faced Achill Sound. Two very tight games followed and with two 1-0 scorelines the final between Saula and Bullsmouth/Valley was set up. The finals were played the following day. First up it was Saula Vs Bullsmouth/Valley in the girls final. Saula got an early goal. From then on Bullsmouth/Valley piled on most of the pressure but could not find a way past Sarah English in the Saula goal. As they kept searching for the equaliser Saula struck again just before full time. The 2-0 scoreline was harsh on Bullsmouth/Valley but Saula were definitely worthy winners. The boys final followed. The two less favoured teams faced each other having both defeated more favoured teams the previous day. Dookinella struck first and then Tonragee equalised. The full time score was still 1-1 and extra time followed. The rules of the competition say that any tied matches in the knock out phase are decided by golden goal, meaning that the next goal wins. It is a tough way for a tournament to be decided but it was exciting viewing for the large crowd in Polranny. It was a super strike that decided the game and the destination of the Andrew Forry Cup and it was Tonragee that scored it. There was some consolation for the losing teams as both the girl's and boy's player of the tournament came from their teams. Aoife Gallagher was presented with the girls award (for the second year in a row) and Michael Lavelle picked up the boys award. A blitz for the junior classes will be held around Easter time. Achill Rovers would like to thank all the schools, children, parents, teachers and coaches for their help in running this most enjoyable competition. Many thanks to all the brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and grandparents who came along to support their teams too. And finally a special word of thanks to Brian McNeill who refereed ALL 35 matches in the competition and to CPA and Mayo County Council for the use of the Astro Turf facilities in Polranny.

In the autumn of 2013, Achill Rovers held a very successful girls football competition through the National Schools. It was clear from that that there were many girls interested in playing football and that the skill levels were very high. In the spring of 2014 we entered the girls in the Under 14’s Mayo League Division 1 which ran through the summer months. The training in the spring started out with 9 or 10 girls aged from 9 up to 13 years of age and increased every week to 23+ at the start of the league. It was a huge challenge for our girls who togged out against many more developed teams across the county, but this did not stop any of our squad from going out and playing their hearts out. Many managers from other clubs complimented our players for getting our Achill girls team back out there and said we had some very talented players on our squad, some of which were selected to go forward for the FAI Emerging Talent Programme and Mayo Squad Trials; U12’s Aoife Gallagher, U13’s Amy McHugh & Emma McNulty and U14’s Mary Grealis & Selina Dever. It is a great opportunity for these girls to experience playing at this level and hopefully bring some positive skills back to our squad in the new season. Well done to those selected and hopefully we’ll have twice as many selected next year. Well done also to those who won awards at our Awards Night: Most Improved Player: Emma McNulty; Players Player of the Year: Amy McHugh; Player of the Year: Selina Dever and Top Scorer: Amy McHugh. I think we should be very proud of our girls going out and taking on teams with some players 3-4 years older than some of our younger players. Thank you to the parents and other coaches that helped out in any way during the past year. Well Done Girls!!!! Finally, many thanks to Westnet who sponsored the girls team kit.

2014 was a disappointing season by the standards that we set our selves in 2013. Immigration and injuries robbed us of some of our best players but that wasn't the whole story and we have to look back on the season, figure out how we could have done better, learn from our mistakes and prepare for next year. I have no doubt that we have the talent in Achill to challenge any club in the county. I would like to thank my assistant John Gallagher and the players for their hard work and dedication through the year. Thanks also to our supporters. It was great to see such big crowds down in the Valley this year and thanks to the people who travelled to be at our away games too. Thanks to the committee for keeping the show on the road and to our sponsors. Finally, I want to congratulate Patrick Francis and Sean on the awards they received from the Mayo League. Well deserved they were too. Its nice to think that people from outside our club and parish are taking note of the good work being done here in Achill. Happy Christmas to you all and I wish you all the very best in 2015.

Sports Ball Marred by Severe Lack of Soup by Formerly Achill Rovers The inaugural Achill Sports Ball was held last Saturday night in Ostan Oilean Acla and was universally declared as a massive success island-wide. The bucks out in Curraun didn’t care for it much though. However, one minor hiccup was spotted by a couple of folk and this page has been asked to carry out a piece of investigative journalism into the debacle which has become known absolutely nowhere as “Soupgate”. According to complete lies I just came up with, trouble began at table 12 early on in the evening where a couple of unruly golfers were confused by the wording of the menu. “Chicken and mushroom valavint.. is that, is that the soup is it?” a well-known 24-handicapper asked. “Will ya don’t be stupid, the soup will be between the starter and the main, isn’t that right loveen?” a former Lady Captain asked the perplexed waitress. “Eh...emm...eh...” the waitress explained. Confusion reigned later in the evening as a couple of Rovers latchicos were spotted drinking the gravy straight from the jug with dessert spoons. “Flippin’ hell that soup is awful tasty, oxtail is it?” one of them was overheard asking, as the other nodded enthusiastically in agreement. Meanwhile, a prominent young boxer was spotted filling up his coffee cup with the Mi-Wadi, attacking it with the teaspoon before sending it back to the kitchen. “This soup is watery, cold and rank. Sort yourselves out or I’ll batter ye,” he politely told the waitress. The athletics club were decidedly unpleased with the turn of events and wisely popped out to the front door for a drop of soup. However, rumours that Darragh O’Sé asked Eddie Doran outside for a spot of Avonmore and a shouldering competition remain unconfirmed. The range of opinions was widespread but one thing is for sure, the absence of soup, combined with the presence of brown bread on the table, caused a massive divide of opinion in an otherwise united evening. Earlier today, I approached each of the sporting clubs for a comment. Achill Boxing Club: The more soup, the better. Achill GAA: In this day and age, there are 2 types of soup – fake soup you can order online, and real soup from a flask. Achill Rovers: More soup please. Achill Ladies’ GAA: Karina Moran makes fine soup. Bord na n-Og: Soup would only spoil your dinner. Achill Golf Club: I remember back in 1975 at the inaugural Golf dinner dance, soup was served. What were your views on this happening? Should there have been soup? Would you like soup for next year? If you were a soup, what soup would you be? Over the past few years the crew behind the Formerly-Achill Rovers Facebook Page have entertained us (sometimes controversially) with their unique take on Achill Rovers and Achill Life in general. The page is independent and is not part of Achill Rovers.

THE CAPTAIN'S LOG
As I sit down and write this and look back on the year, I’m thinking, Christ, I did a great job as the club’s PRO. From landing The Underdogs on RTE to the bit on BBC and of course putting a few pints in behind the bar in Ted’s for Anton McNulty to be sneekin’ us into the Mayo News Sports Section. Well, I might have said a little lie at the start there but I would like I thank Sean Molloy for making and taking Achill Rovers and the Mayo League to another level. Football wise we are still in competitive action in the Connaught Cup and face Salthill Devon in Januray. Stay tuned for that upset below in the Valley. I would like to thank everyone involved in the junior and under age teams. A big thanks to Sean and the Giggsy for being heavily involved in the junior team this year. Although we didn't achieve the highs of last year we've plenty to look forward to next year. We seemed to hit a mid season slump and never quite recovered from it. But as they say you learn from your mistakes. It takes a lot to keep a club like Rovers going year in and out and it was great to see the likes of Sean and Patrick Francis receive awards that they deserved for there efforts to keep the soccer scene alive on the island. A big thanks to Calveys and Lourdies for there sponsorship of the home and away team kit. From Michael Twin to Tony Grealis and Pee and John Taxi and everyone involved in the club thanks very much you're great lads! - Martin Doolan. Martin Doolan,
Mayo League Presentation Night
At the recent Mayo League Presentation Dinner, Achill Rovers scooped two prestigious awards. Patrick Francis Gallagher became only the second Achill man to be inducted into the Mayo Association Football League Hall of Fame. Patrick (Pee) English received the honour in 1995. John Durkan, secretary of the Mayo League said that the award was being made to Patrick Francis because of his commitment to coaching for almost four decades. He said that he was widely regarded as a true gentleman of the game. He also said that Patrick Francis had won 15 trophies at various levels as coach of Achill Rovers and still approached each training session with the same enthusiasm as his first. Sean Molloy became the first ever winner of the Mayo League Clubperson of the Year Award. In presenting the award, John Durkan said that while much of the adulation and praise is bestowed on players on night’s like tonight, it is important that those behind the scenes are recognized for their efforts. Hard working, dedicated to the cause, enthusiastic are traits every Club needs to have in their members in order to keep going in this challenging environment. He said that Sean has these traits in abundance and you can add in innovation, vision and a willingness to embrace all media strands as a way of promoting the game and his club. Both awards were presented by Peter Collins of RTE Sport.

THE NEXT GENERATION
As the underage season draws to a close it is nice to look back on what has been a reasonably good year for the club. I had the privilege of being involved with three of the teams this year and each one of them had a good level of success. The under 15 team had a great season and eventually finished as runners up in their league losing only two matches all season, both to eventual winners Fahy Rovers. The players developed well and were playing some great football as the season went on. The under 13 team were in a very tough league and fielded many under 12 players. They gave a good account of themselves and had some very good results along the way. At the time of writing our under 12 team are coming to the end of what has been a great season so far. The league went all the way to the last game and ended up going to a play off in Milebush versus Castlebar Celtic. Celtic were the only team to have beaten us all season and it was always going to be a difficult task to secure victory. However lessons were learnt from that defeat and after a titanic struggle the league title was secured with a 3-2 victory. The double is still on for this team as they are also through to the cup final after some great results along the way. The quarter final was again against familiar opposition Castlebar Celtic. One goal was enough to secure a great win to advance to the semi-final. Yet another away draw saw the team travel to Killala for the semi-final. The lads put on an outstanding performance to come away with a 6-0 victory. Fahy Rovers await in the final. Playing in a league higher than Rovers they are going to be a stern test. They are unbeaten in all competitions this season and that gives us a guide as to what to expect. I have no doubt that our lads will give another great performance and playing to their full potential can win this match and secure the league and cup double for the club. My fellow managers Patrick English (U15) Eddie Gallagher (U13) and John Joe McNamara (U12) deserve great credit for their time and effort throughout the year. Without their input the club would not be able to field these teams and I would like to thank them for all their help and expertise along the way. The parents of these young players deserve great credit for having them at training when required and travelling long distances to support the team. The support is very much appreciated. A friendly shout of encouragement at a home or away match means a lot to a young player. Finally a special word of thanks to Etain O’Connor-Molloy for her help throughout the season. Her input into the club made our jobs much easier and is greatly appreciated by players and managers alike. This past season saw the return of a girls team representing the club. Etain along with Ute Klingler did a great job with this team and the girls performed very well. I wish them well for the coming season and I’m sure it will not be long before they bring more success to the club.

This year was an indifferent season for under 14’s, days we should have won games we lost and vice versa, games we lost or drew we could have won. Other games we lost we were well beaten and took those on the chin. The under 14 team was made up from U13’s team and youngest players from U15’s spring league to play in the summer league. As time goes by these players will do alright and will have success with Achill Rovers at another age group. At Achill Rovers we do possess some good quality players in girls and youth teams at all ages and we hope they can bring that to the next level they go to. It is important that players all show for both home and away games as it is not easy playing under strength to other good teams. A final point to remember, only eleven players can start a game and coming off the bench can change games and your time will not be wasted if that happens.

Achill Boxing Club. Our mission is to develop the club to become the hub for bringing the community together and develop championship level boxers that in turn become local sport stars and, role models to inspire other youngsters. We are very lucky to have got a new premises in the former Derreens N.S. Which has turned out to be a great asset to us. Since we started up in August 2012 we have won seven Mayo titles, two Connaught titles, one National title and one of our members was a finalist in the National cadets . Achill B.C is growing from strength to strength and we have some great young talent coming up. We held our first tournament in Achill on the 10th of January 2013 in a packed Ostan Oilean Acla . It was amazing to see so many locals turn out to support our boxers which in turn gave them a great night of boxing with an impressive six wins out of seven. We were very proud the next morning to find the news papers had hailed our tournament as the best in Mayo in many years. We now have the honour of hosting an inter-county where Mayo will take on a very strong Donegal squad with 18 bouts to be decided in the same venue on the first of February 2015 . We are expecting a huge turn out as some of our boxers are lucky enough to be on the Mayo squad and will be boxing on the day. We are also looking forward to our own tournament in January also in the same venue . We would like to thank everyone who has helped us out when we are fund raising . Times are hard and people are still willing to support us . You can keep an eye on what's coming up in the club with our Facebook page Achill BC.

(Originally published by the Mayo News in January 2014) A capacity crowd attended the inaugural Achill Sports Ball on 28th December last. Tickets for the event were sold out since October. Indeed such was the demand for the tickets that at least twice as many could have been sold if the venue was big enough. In all 8 Achill sports clubs came together to co-host this unique event. The clubs involved were Achill GAA, Achill Ladies GAA, Achill Rovers, Achill Golf Club, Achill Athletics Club, Achill Bord na nOg, Achill Boxing Club and Achill schools sports. The event kicked off at 3pm with a pop-up museum of local sports memorabilia. On display were hundreds of pictures of Sporting achievements of Achill people in the past. Some of the highlights were: A special Olympic Gold and silver won by Mary Henry in Beijing in 2007. A Paralympic silver won by Conall McNamara in Athens in 2004. Mayo Minor winning jerseys and medals, Tommy Cafferkey 1966, Kieran O'Malley 1978 & Eddie Doran 2013. Tommy Cafferkey’s U21 medal from 1967 was also on display. On the soccer front there was the jersey Kevin Kilbane wore on his international debut against Iceland in 1997 and a display of items from Marie Gallaghers' internationals with the Rep of Ireland. An England schoolboys football cap won by Aiden Heaney in 1986 who went on to play with New England Revolution in the MLS in the 1990s. Over 3 dozen cups and trophies were on display. Some won by the various clubs in Mayo competition this year and others that have been competed for locally for generations. These included the Connaught Minor Cup, The Grainne Uaile Golf Cup, the Scanlon Cup. Martin Gallagher Cup, Corn Acla, Andrew Forry Cup, Terence Dever Cup, Kevin Kilbane Cup, Fr. O'Brien Cup, Ciaran Patten Cup, Big Mack Shield & Hackey Cup. Michael D McNamara welcomed everybody to a truly unique and historic event. He extended a warm Achill welcome to the special guests for this evening, Mayo Minor winner Eddie Doran, Darragh O’Se winner of 6 All Ireland medals and 4 All Star awards and President of the FAI, Paddy McCaul He thanked the special guests for giving up their time to attend the function and said he hoped that throughout the evening would get an appreciation for what the community is all about and leave with fond memories of Achill. He also congratulated all the clubs for uniting together to be involved in the night’s celebration. “You have shown foresight and vision by your involvement and your efforts and commitment to making tonight’s event a success is to be commended. I would also like to thank the leaders of the respective clubs for helping to organise the event and for making the pop up museum such a success”, he said. He went on to say “Tonight is not only about recognition of the skill, will and determination that those involved in our sports clubs have applied themselves with throughout the year, it is not only about the blood the sweat and tears that we put into our sports in 2013; tonight is also about a realisation. A realisation that as both individuals and individual clubs we can do good things but collectively as a community, as clubs with a shared vision we can do great things.” He concluded by saying, “As you came through the pop up museum this evening you could not help but be inspired by all of the history on display. For me the best thing about history is that tomorrow’s history is not yet written. We must continue to support our clubs that shape our community and develop a framework that ensures that the history of tomorrow is as fruitful and inspiring as the history of the past. If we all continue to play our part we will undoubtedly achieve our potential whatever that maybe and we will leave a legacy that will inspire future generations.” Darragh O'Se said he was delighted to attend the event as Achill was very much like his own home area, Ventry in Co. Kerry. “Unfortunately these types of areas don’t have the luxury of having plenty of players for all sports. There’s no “them Vs us” anymore. We all have to pull together”. “In my own area, we had problems with our pitch and the Rugby Club next door to us made the gesture of giving us their pitch. It was a step in the right direction. All young fellas want to play Gaelic football, soccer and rugby. It has to be encouraged. I think this is a unique occasion and that’s why I wanted to come up, because I wanted to be part of it” He said that the concept of all the local sporting organisations coming together for an event such as this was to be welcomed and said that other communities around the country should follow the example. Paddy McCaul congratulated the organisers and thanked them for their invitation. He said “he was glad to be in Achill on such a unique occasion and it truly was a unique occasion. When I heard about the concept itself, I said “wow” that’s what we’re about and really as sporting people that’s what we should be striving for, not just in rural areas, but every area. All clubs should get together to share our players and our facilities, which is a must with the advent of less money being available. We also have to move on together as sporting bodies”. As an example he said “soccer has grown over the last number of years and is probably one of the highest participated sports. I don’t say that boastfully but what I do see is that hasn’t affected the GAA. We’re on the back of one of the best GAA years of all time and they are still able to bring through fabulous players like Eddie Doran”. He congratulated the community spirit that was on show in Achill in being able to come together for such an occasion. On a personal note he thanked a very good friend of his Tony Gallagher from Dugort for making the connection. Other invited guests were Michael Ring TD, Minister for Sport, who congratulated the organisers on an exciting and innovative idea and regretted that he could not be there on the night but said he would definitely attend next year. Manchester Utd star Darren Fletcher, whose mother hails from Achill was also unable to attend as fortunately he has resumed his playing career with the Premier League champions after missing a year due to illness, but committed to attending in future years if at all possible. While the evening started with the museum of past sporting achievements, the theme of the dinner was very much the present and the future. A video clip featuring hundreds of men, women and children taking part in sport in Achill in 2013 was shown prior to the start of the meal. Marty Gallagher, Chairman Achill GAA, said that his club was delighted to be part of the event. Achill Bord na nOg Chairman Michael Joyce thanked all who helped them during the year. He congratulated the successful minor team who won Division 5 and the U10s who won two keenly contested blitzes in Kilmeena and Newport. He wished all the other clubs much success in 2014. Finally with Darragh O’Se, he co-presented a special award to Eddie Doran in recognition of his achievements during 2013 and for the example he has shown to younger players. Intermediate manager Paul McNamara presented two awards on behalf of Achill GAA. Peter Gallagher won the Young Player of the Year and Michael D. McNamara won the Player of the Year Award. Paul praised all the volunteers from all the clubs. He said that while 2013 was a difficult year for the intermediate team due to immigration and other problems that all clubs faced nowadays there were some highs especially with Eddie Doran playing for Mayo and they have the flag flying high for 2014. 2014 promises to be a big year for Achill GAA. They have a development plan which will be going for planning permission at the end of January. The new development will consist of a new club house and changing rooms and a community facility with a walkway for life around the circumference of the pitch. He said the club has produced some great footballers and ambassadors over the years including the late Denis Gallagher, for president of the Connaught Council. Packie McGinty, the former president of the Mayo County Board and the late Sean Vesey who played for Mayo & Fermanagh was president of the Ulster Council. He remarked on the photos of past teams that were on display and singled out the tremendous achievements of McHale Collage especially during the 1980’s and 1990’s which had pictures of 18 county, Connaught or All-Ireland winning teams on display. He thanked Niall Lynchehaun, the then principal of the school for his dedication to sport. He said that it was important to encourage all young people to follow their hobbies and take up sport whither its Gaelic football, soccer, golf or any other sport. He said the friendships that are made on Keel Sandybanks, Davitt Park, Achill Sound or Fr. O’Brien Park in the Valley are friendships for life. Achill Golf Club captain Brian Byrne said it was a great pleasure for the club to be part of the occasion. He said it was very important for any rural area for everybody to co-operate with each other. “It is now and will always be in the future, the ambition of the club to provide golf for everybody in Achill and for visitors too. It’s a very important amenity in Achill and we are always looking for new members. We are always trying to encourage people to join the club, We provide lessons for young members and our membership fees are geared towards enticing people to join us.” He said that Christy Gallagher in particular had worked hard in promoting the club to younger people. 2013 has been a great year for the club. For the past 2 years the club has won both the county cup and The Grainne Uaile Cup and are optimistic of getting the three in a row. The ladies won the ladies Grainne Uaile in 2013 too. Brian congratulated all the award winners on the night and said that an event like this in the community made everybody a winner. Ken Quinn spoke on behalf of Achill’s newest club, Achill Boxing Club. He thanked the volunteers and the sponsors for bringing the club into existence and that even though they were only operating for a year they competed in their first tournament recently in Ardnaree where they brought three boxers and completed the hat trick by getting three wins. Another boxer, Adam Dempsey has been picked for the Mayo team. The club are hosting their first tournament in Achill on 11th January. Annmarie English represented the Achill Athletic Club. She outlined how the club was established in 2010 to give a chance to children who were interested in Athletics to train locally and represent the local area in county and national events. “Traditionally there has been great interest in Athletics in Achill through school sports, community games and track and field events. Many individuals and their families have travelled all over the county to compete in these events.” She said, “Achill have had their own great successes over the years and a number of medals were on display here today. Connall McNamara who won silver in the 2004 Paralympic games in Athens and Mary Henry who won Gold & Silver in the 2007 Special Olympic Games in Beijing and Alice Dever who won the All-Ireland Triple Jump in 2011. Their achievements have inspired others and we hope to give the local children today the opportunity to achieve success.” More recently the club have competed in competitions in Nenagh, Claremorris & Castlebar. The club now has 10 coaches trained through Athletics Ireland and they look forward to competing at many events in 2014. As they are a new club they don’t have their own facilities at the moment. Annmarie thanked all those who provided facilities to them, Achill Rovers, The Mangan family, Dooega and Colaiste Acla, Mayo Co Co, St. Vincent’s Community Park, Cashel and Tim Daly and Mayo VEC. She also thanked Achill Tourism for their support and sponsorship. Finally she thanked the organisers of the Sports Ball and said that their club was honoured to be part of it Packie McGinty and Margaret Dever presented the Achill Ladies GAA player of the year award to Karina Moran and the Club person of the year award to Kelly McNamara. Club chairman Packie McGinty praised the dedication of the people involved in running the club from the players to the coaches to the committee. While 2013 wasn’t the best on the field, off the field lots of things were happening that bode well for the future of the club. Speaking on behalf of the organisers of the Ball, Sean Molloy thanked everybody for their co-operation in bringing the event into reality. He thanked the people who lent the photos, cups, jerseys and other memorabilia for the museum. Sean said “For too many years we have invented ways of dividing ourselves in Achill. We have been Upper Achill and Lower Achill, Gaeltacht and Non-Gaeltacht. Did you go to Padraig’s or the Tech? Were you Fianna Fail or Fine Gael and did you play soccer or gaelic? There’s no room for such divisions anymore. This night proves what great things can be achieved when we stand together” Sean also thanked Marty Mangan who for many years has supported all the sports clubs by generously making Colaiste Acla available to all. Speaking as chairman of Achill Rovers, Sean thanked all those who made 2013 a truly memorable year. The U15s won the Mayo Division 3 title and the U16s won the Division 2 title and the Mayo Trophy. The men’s team finished second in Mayo League 1 and will be playing Premier Division Football next season. The club now has over 400 members and with the addition of 11 new coaches in the past year, the club was able to field a record 8 teams. Coaching has now been extended to the U8s and at least one girl’s team will be fielded in 2014. FAI president Paddy McCaul presented the League 1 Runners up medals to joint managers Krzystof Jablonski and Martin McGing. He also presented them with the Mayo team of the Month award for June. Achill Rovers young player of the year award went to Johnny Kiernan. The Danny Sweeney memorial Award was presented to top scorer Ronan Kilbane by Danny’s brother Thomas & Patrick. Terence Dever won the players player of the year award. Kathleen Lee presented the Johnny Lee memorial Award for the Player of the Year to Michael D McNamara. The audience responded to Michael D’s double award with a standing ovation. The final 2 awards of the night were awarded jointly by all the sports clubs. The Achill Sports Hall of Fame award was presented by Paddy McCaul to Myles Lyons Snr of Achill Golf Club. Myles was part of the Grainne Uaile winning team on 1973 and played in this years winning team at the age of 83. The second award was for the Achill Sports Star of the Year. This year it was won by Eddie Doran winning the Connaught minor title and All-Ireland with Mayo and Division 5 minor title with Achill. It was presented by Daragh O'Se. By all accounts the night was a huge success and the hunt for tickets for next year’s event is already underway . .
