19 Things TO DO
in the Summer of 19
The relaxed days of summer allow for a different pace of life, different schedules in our homes, and a chance to do some new activities that we can’t always take part in during the school year.
Here is a list of ideas for your consideration as your family enjoys these fun-filled and sun-filled days ahead:
Read aloud. Have parents or older siblings read out loud to younger children in the home. Have children read out loud to parents or older siblings.
Read books as a family. Make it a fun competition to see who can read the most books! Read the Bible together as a family. Read Bible story books. Reading is at the root of learning here at MCL, as we focus on children “learning to read and then reading to learn.”
Go to the Public Library. It’s still free, and usually nearby by for many of us. You might even be able to walk to one near you!
Sign up for special events at your local library. They happen often and are often free. Check out their web-sites, or just drop by and pick up a schedule.
Go to area bookstores. They still exist, and they too will often have reading programs for kids and special educational activities that your children can participate in for free or low cost.
Limit screen time. The computer and TV are a great resource for education. So much information to be explored! However convenient and interesting our devises may be, there is more to life than, “the screen in front of us.” Seek to find a nice balance of screen time, book time, physical activity, people time, outside time, and family time.
Plan some physical activity. Go swimming. Sing up your kids for a sports camp. Go on a hike. Go on a walk in a park. Get outside!
Do an individualized summer study program. There are age specific workbooks, available for purchase on-line, or in local book stores or teacher supply stores. Pick one and use it during an intentional time of growth and learning at a consistent time.
Go to museums. Who doesn’t like “field trips?” …especially when you have extra time to enjoy a full day at one of the many museums in our region.
Go to the zoo. Enjoy a day outside as a family at one of our many area zoos in SoCal. Plan ahead as a family. You might even plan an overnighter to the San Diego Zoo!
Get together with other families. Select an activity—sports game, movie, play, etc—and see if you can get a group rate, and enjoy quality and quantity time together with a wider group of friends.
Write letters and post cards. Yep, this is pretty “old school,” but what a great way to surprise friends and family with a special note! It also allows your children to continue to develop their handwriting and sentence construction skills.
Take tours. Some commercial companies offer tours of their manufacturing plants for free, and sometimes they give you free samples. Also investigate the local Police and Fire Departments as well. You can easily check out availability of these opportunities on-line.
Do family service. Volunteer at community events. Go to your church to see how you can help out. Collect food and clothing for non-profit groups.
Visit a senior home. Older people love to interact with children. Call ahead to see what you can do to connect, what you can bring, and when it is a good time to visit.
Attend Vacation Bible School. Go to VBS at your church, come to Mt Calvary, go to a friend’s church. Enjoy learning God’s Word in a new and different setting this summer.
Do a home family project. Pick something to do that is an improvement or addition to your home life. Clean something. Organize something. Paint something. Spruce things up!
Have a consistent schedule. It’s great to sleep in longer—but don’t sleep away your days. Set aside specific time for fun and study each day. Plan special events each week. Enjoy this different pace of life, but stay in “study shape.”
Stay safe. We love all of our children and the families connected with Mt Calvary, and want to see you back for the start of school. Enjoy the time away. Make wise choices. Have fun!
Have a great summer MCL families! We look forward to hearing all about your summer activities and seeing you back for the start of school on August 12.
