Message from the Principal
Dear MGIS Families,
It is with great pride that I report the Forward test scores from last year. Our 2017-18 4th graders were the top in the district in all academic areas: Math, Reading, Social Studies, and Science.
It is in part due to some changes we made as a staff, but it is also due in part to the dedication that our parents feel towards this program and their children. If you would like to see more information about our school scores, click on this link or please go to: https://www.schooldigger.com
On December 15th, Dr. Posely is hosting a Language Summit at the Milwaukee School of Languages from 11:30-2:15. It will bring together families, community leaders and MPS stakeholders in the effort to learn more about languages and opportunities. As MGIS is a flagship school for language learning, we hope to be well represented by families attending and stopping by our table to help spread the immersion word. Please watch for a flyer coming home with an RSVP (childcare provided).
From the Office Staff:
PLEASE, PLEASE have a weather appropriate extra set of clothes (including socks) for your kids in their backpacks! We have limited clothes for emergencies and are running low, donations appreciated.
However, it is by far easier for your child to use their own clothes! Please remember to label outerwear, so we can return it to the student, if it happens to get lost!

Battle of the Books
There are many ways to volunteer at MGIS. Please give your time, if you can. It is always appreciated!
Lunchroom Helpers 11am-1230pm. These superheros help open milks, Go-gurts, and utensils. They also help wash the tables in between lunch shifts. People are needed on a daily basis. Click here to go to the Sign -Up Genius
PBIS Cart, T-TH, various times. The students' favorite volunteer. These people take the cart around to the kids and let them turn in the tickets that they earn for prizes. Generally speaking, this takes about an hour for one grade level.
Click here for the Sign-Up Genius (Nov/Dec)
Reading Groups, both languages. Generally speaking, these are set up by individual teachers; however, if you have any questions, a great place to start is with Frau Tomkalski: email@example.com
PTA and GIF: Both of these organizations do so much for our school!
If you would like more info on the PTA, please email PTA President Judy Rutter: firstname.lastname@example.org
GIF is in need of volunteer families for the interns. If you would like more info please contact: email@example.com
Communication is a huge part of a school's job: That is why we are so excited to bring the bug right to your inbox or phone!
You will be seeing a paper copy of the bug with a calendar for the month on one side of it, and the first page of the bug on the other. When the paper bug goes home, you will also receive an email or text that day.
If you are not receiving text messages or emails from the MGIS Remind system, please make sure to change or add your information in the office with Frau Wade. You can also sign up directly for the Remind App.
For those wishing to add information to the BUG, submissions are due on the 20th of every month.
Please also subscribe to the MGIS website for notifications of new posts:
Questions: Please email Frau Tomkalski (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Snow play on the playground:
A majority of the playground does not get plowed. Children must have BOOTS, SNOWPANTS, mittens and hats in order to play on the playground in the snow. If they don't, they will be asked to stay in the plowed area against the building. If you are having trouble finding outerwear, please let your teacher know so we can help.
LOST AND FOUND!
LAST CHANCE! All Items will be donated before Winter Break.
Over 50 coats and sweatshirts have already been lost and found! PLEASE stop by the lost and found to see if your child's items are there. PLEASE also write their name on all clothing items that might come off during the day!!
December-January 2018 PTA Updates:
Hello MGIS Families,
Thank you to everyone that attended Laternennacht this year. The snow made for a beautiful and extra sparkly event, and our lanterns certainly lit up the night! I would also like to extend a special thank you to all of the room parents that provided cookies, so everyone could have a yummy treat!
We hope to see you at the PTA meeting on December 13th at 6:30 p.m. It is the same night as pick-up for your Stone Creek Coffee, O&H Kringle and Spiritwear orders! (Pickup available from 3:30 to 6:15 p.m.). We hope that you found the new fall fundraiser items exciting and easy to sell and we hope you enjoyed the convenience of ordering Spiritwear via order form. Thank you for your participation in these fundraisers! Your involvement helps all the kids at MGIS!
Fellow parent, Katie Taff, was our guest speaker at the PTA meeting in November. After we concluded PTA business, Katie spoke to us about car seat and booster seat safety during the winter months. Thank you, Katie, for the valuable information on keeping our kiddos safe!
If you have not yet supported our PTA by becoming a member, I hope that can be part of your New Year’s resolution! Once we reach 150 members, there will be a drawing for a $15 Target gift card. We are close to 150, so join soon to get in on the drawing! Go to https://mgis.memberhub.store/ or pick- up a PTA envelope in the school office.
Finally, I would like to wish everyone a safe, happy and healthy holiday season and a wonderful 2019.

Hello MGIS families!
K4 and K5 have been continuing their musical education through singing games, playing instruments, and movement.
3rd – 5th grade students have been learning about the Symphony Orchestra as we prepared for our visit to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s youth concert, Trills and Chills II. What a treat it was to hear the music of Beethoven, Saint-Saens, John Williams, Mussorgsky, and others!
2nd grade students also have been learning about the symphony orchestra, with a special focus on instrument families. 1st graders have been learning about beat, meter, and rhythm and recently have started applying their skills and knowledge to playing instruments.
In addition to all that is happening in the classrooms, I’m excited to announce that we have a date for our annual all-school music concert! That date is Wednesday, April 10th at 6:30 p.m. at the Milwaukee School of Languages. Stay tuned for more details!
Lastly, I’d like to wish our entire MGIS family a very merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Hat & Mitten Drive!
It is once again time for the MPS Mitten Drive! Please bring new or gently used mittens and hats to MGIS between December 10th-20th. All items will be given to other MPS students (and anyone at MGIS who needs them). Please consider donating this year. Thank you!!
Mark your calendar for our annual all school rollerskating night. The PTA hosts this family friendly event at Incrediroll on Oaklahoma Ave on January 17th, 2019.
More information will come home after the winter break. See you on the rink!
Battle of the BOOKS!!
4th and 5th grade students participating in the Battle of the Books, we hope that you are reading, reading, and reading some more!! Most of the titles for this year's battle are available from the MGIS library. We have also checked the Tosa library, where they are also available, and have a list on hand (ask the children's librairan). We use the WEMTA elementary list.
All adults (regardless of whether or not you have a student participating):
We are always in need of volunteers to read the questions to the teams. Our Battle week is Feb. 8th-14th. We really need people the 8th, 11th, and 12th. Please mark your calendars to support our young readers one or more of those days!! A sign-up will come via Remind in January. THANK YOU!!
Schachverein/Schachklub – Chess News
After taking home individual and team trophies in our first 2 tournaments of the year – a combined 7 trophies, we look to continue our winning ways with tournaments at Washington HS and Nicolet HS in December as well as tournaments in 2019.
We will also be hosting our own WSCF tournament on Saturday, January 12. Registration will open later in December via the Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation (WSCF), the league that our school plays in. This tournament will be the first time that MGIS has hosted such a tournament and will hopefully become an annual event. All current and former students are welcome. Entry for the 5-round tournament is $10 with advanced registration; the tournament starts at 8:30 AM.
The 4th and 5th grade classes will be selling concessions at our tournament. Parent volunteers are needed on the chess organizing side (scorer’s tables, floor TD’s, registration), and child and parent volunteers are needed to run concessions.
Please feel free to contact our chess coach, Herr Templin (email@example.com), with any questions.
THANK YOU to everyone who made this night so amazing. It is always one of my favorites! -Frau Tomkalski
Thank you to Joe Brusky from the MTEA and Frau Heck and Frau Bay who captured so many great moments.
