Project Overview: The architectural concept for the building is derived from the history, character, culture, and the natural surrounding environment of the town of Salida. The design team looked to the local mining and railroad structures for inspiration. Some of the original structures, like railroad water tanks, are built of dark grey or rusted metal siding boxes perched on wood ‘stick-frame’ structures. The Community was integral to the Design Process. The Design Team met biweekly for the duration of the design with the Design Advisory Group (DAG) in the afternoon and the community at night. This successful and enjoyable process brought the entire community together while keeping them informed with the latest design decisions. Longfellow Elementary achieved a CO-CHPS Verified Leader certification. CO-CHPS was selected due to its stronger emphasis toward schools and creating high performance learning environments, not just high performance buildings. The project focused on criteria such as indoor air quality, daylighting, acoustics, energy-efficient materials and design practices.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY - Energy performance optimization reduces overall energy consumption by 50%. WATER USAGE - Consumption reduced by 42%, compared to baseline ‘standard’ building design. LOCAL MATERIALS - Preference was given to materials within a 500 mile radius of the building site in order to reduce embodied energy due to shipping.
