Compact Vandaceous Species and Hybrids
Compact Vandaceous Species and Hybrids. Learn about the many different small growing species and hybrids within the Vanda alliance. This fast-paced presentation will include many pictures along with cultural tips.
Peter started growing orchids over 30 years ago, but then stopped due to school and starting a career. It wasn't until about 14 years ago that the orchid "bug" came back and he is now heavily involved once again. He is an accredited judge with the American Orchid Society and a hybridizer of mini-catts. He enjoys meeting with other orchid enthusiasts, and can often be found at various orchid shows and societies around the country. He also has thousands of photos of his orchids that he maintains on Flickr. You can view them by typing this address into the internet: http://www.flickr.com/photos/minicatt/collections/
Due to limited growing space, Peter likes to specialize in miniature orchids, both species and hybrids, and has received numerous AOS awards. His other interests in orchids include Dendrobiums, Angraecoids, and Neofinetias. He maintains a collection of a thousand or more orchids at his home in Southern California in 3 small greenhouses, as well as in the house under fluorescent lights.

From the President
If we imagine there was no pandemic, we would typically have been immersed now in the details of our 69th annual Pacific Orchid Exposition. Because we have no POE or OITP now in 2021, the spring may feel a bit more empty - but I also keep thinking about what it will take to get the show and sale up again in 2022 – Should we do anything differently? I have heard from many members that despite missing the in person meetings, they whole-heartedly hope we continue to still keep some virtual option for our monthly meetings when they eventually can resume in person.
What do you think? Reach out and let me know!
Speaking of the member meetings, at the February 2nd meeting with Dennis Szeszko & Robert Marsh doing their tag-team talk on Barkerias, we had our best Zoom turnout yet (over 85 people). The talk and another superb Show & Tell session run by Lynne was recorded and is available in the members’ section of our website or on our YouTube channel.
On March 2nd we welcome back Peter Lin of Diamond Orchids talking about Mini Vandas – and we have arranged for an extra special “opportunity table” - for our paid up SFOS members present at the end of the meeting, we will raffle off 16 $25 gift codes to Diamond Orchids as well as 10 $20 gift codes to use at The Tiny Jungle, and a $35 gift code for use at Fresh To You Farm.
So remember to renew your dues if you have not done so already.
As always, PLEASE RSVP for the Zoom meeting via our website (www.orchidsanfrancisco.org) and send up to3show and tell pics by email to Lynne Murrell (email@example.com) by no later than Monday, March 1st (the day before the meeting).
Though we have enough money in savings to weather the changes the pandemic has brought, without the revenue usually brought in by POE & OITP we will most likely have a deficit. So though we have prioritized keeping up our highest quality of programming and doing all we can to meet our annual goals around supporting orchid conservation and education - please also help us grow the membership by promoting the society on social media, and consider gifting a membership or a copies of our Bay Area Guide to Orchids and their Culture – see our website for more information on many of the ways you can help support us. Remember if you try or already use Farm Fresh To You, to include our promo code SFOSFF2U so we get the 10% donation.
Tips for the upcoming
Virtual Meeting on Zoom
PLEASE RSVP for the Zoom meeting via our website (www.orchidsanfrancisco.org) and rather than just calling in, everyone is encouraged to either use the weblink or download the Zoom app ahead of the meeting to be able to better see and share the video content.

Treasurer’s report: Faye
Monthly (Jan 2021) finance report
Lynne moved to accept the monthly finance report as presented and Erik seconded the motion, which passed unanimously by verbal vote.
Membership, small sales and book sales are some of the main sources of income, net revenue this year likely to be negative without a big plant sale. The next budget may come from our savings due to the lack of shows (formerly primary revenue generator in the past)
Questions still being asked about options to grow our savings in an endowment or other investment - but after exploring options we are quite confident that until we have a much larger buffer of funds over our operating expenses it is not feasible or advisable for us to invest our savings.
VP’s update: Erik - Programming Updates:
Mar 2 - Peter Lin (Diamond Orchids) - Mini Vandas
Apr 6 - Wenqing Perner - Orchids of China
May - Terry Kowalczuk - Neofinetias and brief intro to orchid judging in Japan
(invites sent to Scott Barrie, Alan Koch, and Mario Blanco - any other suggestions?)
Membership update: (Lauren / Heidi / Jeff)
Welcomed 4 new members this past month (Celeste Sandoval, Sarah Headean, Paul McCollom & Lila Tschappat). Feb 2nd meeting attendance (~60 RSVPs; 23 people participated in show & tell; 85 people attended the meeting on Zoom - 10 were guests of the speaker from Mexico.
Newsletter editor update: (Christian) - given the increased number of show & tell photos Chris is planning to pick “the best” for the newsletter - reminder to submit contributions including classified ads by the 15th of the month for target e-distribution of newsletter on the 20th of the month
$2500 Conservation grant proposal from Dr. Prabakaran - “Status and conservation of rare and endemic orchids in the tsunami-affected Nicobar archipelago, India;” work is proposed to start Feb 1st 2021 was funded per decision from January’s meeting.
Work has begun by John Rushworth to implement the Weebly “Paid Members” App (integrates with Paypal or Stripe) vs current more manual process - as supported after the board update last month.
Work has also begun by John Rushworth on social media engagement and membership drive advertising with FB/IG $100 a month for 3 months trial run to see how the analytics pan out, as supported after the board update last month.
Discussion about having another member plant sale, potentially last weekend in June - considering doing this at ShellDance again (pending owner confirmation). An event of this type still requires significant planning and effort and we’d need at least 3 months to optimally plan and give members’ that would sell divisions time to prepare.
Next Board Meeting: Monday March 8th - Zoom Meeting to be scheduled to start at 7pm
Meeting adjourned at 8:13 pm.
