Term: Winter | Issue 16| Date: January 2019
The Tower Garden was generously funded on Donors Choose through individual donors, Sonic Drive In, and Google. We are so thankful for the community members who supported this initiative by donating or voting for our project to receive funding. The Tower Garden arrived in December and is already being put to great use! The 6th grade Green Team members help manage the Tower Garden by checking and balancing the pH level of the water, and by adding nutrients to the water. They are currently growing bibb lettuce, gourmet lettuce, arugula, eggplant, cucumbers, tomatoes, mint, basil, and cilantro. The Green Team students led a first grade enrichment lesson in which they taught the first graders about how the Tower Garden works and used the lettuce to make fresh fruit smoothies. Additionally, the third grade class used the lettuce to make salad with homemade ranch and Italian dressing. The Green Team members also presented the Tower Garden to the Board of Education, highlighting their great work and informing our Board members of how the garden works and how it is being used in the school.

"Our IHGS students reached 20,000 tickets and celebrated with a TEAM Beach Day! Students ate lunch on beach towels in the gym and participated in fun games. We are so proud of the hard work students have put into helping others, positive change, anti-bullying, problem solving, resiliency, and leadership. We can't wait until our next TEAM celebration!"
The Island Heights Grade School Spelling Bee took place on Friday, January 25th. Twelve students from grades 3-6 participated. These students scored the highest score on the preliminary test given in their classrooms. Students were given a word list of 450 words to study. Elisha Miranda, a 3rd grade student, won the title of IHGS Spelling Bee Champion. Elisha's winning word was "lustrous". Elisha has the opportunity to participate in the Asbury Park Press Regional Spelling Bee on March 18th and 19th. Best of luck Elisha!
The kindergarten and first grade students have been enjoying using our new coding mice. These mice were generously funded on Donors Choose by Google. Students are able to program the mice to go through a maze and "get the cheese" by pressing the correct sequence of arrows (forwards, backwards, left and right). We are excited to see our youngest students building their coding skills!

BOARD OF EDUCATION REORGANIZATION
This month all of our students are taking the mid-year MAP Growth Test. Our kindergarteners and first graders take the Mathematics and Reading assessments, while students in grades 3 through 6 take the Mathematics, Reading, and Language Usage assessments. We are excited to see each child's growth from September to now! Once all testing has been completed, your child's MAP Growth scores will be posted on the Parent Portal for you to view. The final MAP Growth test will be given near the end of the year. Ultimately, the goal is to help each student to reach their individual projected RIT (Rasch UnIT, which is a measurement scale developed to simplify the interpretation of test scores. The RIT score relates directly to the curriculum scale in each subject area. ) by the end of the school year. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any question about the Map Growth assessment.
