Ahoy Pirates! Over the summer I had a tree removed from my front yard. Upon doing so, there were some unexpected consequences. My Ring alarm system started catching every car that went by and was pinging 55 times per day. My house felt very exposed as now anyone could look directly in my front window with no obstruction and I felt a little less safe. Another rather surprising consequence occurred, too. This little flower appeared a few months later. Is it a weed? Did seeds blow down from a neighbor? Did an overeager neighbor plant it in my now barren front yard in the cover of the night? I am not sure why but this little plant has really given me hope, and dare I even say it? A sense of gratitude. We have been talking a lot about the struggles of this pandemic and how to cope with those overwhelming feelings. We have talked about the importance of acknowledging those feelings. But it is also important too, to have balance. To allow space for gratitude. Gratitude does not have to be the big things. It can be the chill in the air that hints that the oppressive heat is winding down. It can be a day where zoom worked perfectly without glitching, or even not perfect but better than yesterday. Perhaps think of a place that makes you feel safe and relaxed. One thing that is going well. Three things you enjoy. Three things you look forward to. Two people you love and who love you. You may begin to notice I like the science of things. Research shows real benefits to cultivating gratitude including: improved immune system; lowered risk of anxiety, depression; and substance dependence; resilience; and developing success in healthier habits like nutrition and exercise. My hope for our community is that we slow down and while acknowledging our stress; we also remember to cultivate our gratitude.

Hello Pirate Families,
We are asking anyone interested in participating in school athletics this year to complete the Sports Interest Form for your corresponding grade level (Elementary/Middle School/High School). If you have more than one student at Sloan Canyon we would ask that you complete a form for each student athlete. Please have forms completed by 10/7/2020. Your responses will give us as athletic administrators a better understanding of the sports students are interested in and what teams/sports we may be able to offer as restrictions are lifted. In order to have a team we must have enough athletes to fill a complete roster.
At this time there is little change in the proposed schedule sent out from NIAA for High School Athletics. The only changes that were made was to allow for first contests in each sport to occur one day earlier. This is conditional to minimum practice regulations being met. The updated proposed schedule is as follows:
Winter Season Sports (6 competitive weeks):
Practice begins Saturday, January 2, 2021
First contest may be held Thursday, January 14*, 2021
Last contest Saturday, February 20, 2021
Fall Season Sports (6 competitive weeks):
Practice begins Saturday, February 20, 2021 (all sports except Football)
Practice begins Saturday, February 13, 2021 (Football)
First contest may be held Thursday, March 4*, 2021
Last contest Saturday, April 10, 2021
Spring Season Sports (6 competitive weeks):
Practice begins Saturday, April 3, 2021
First contest may be held Thursday, April 15*, 2021
Last contest Saturday, May 22, 2021
*reflects a change from earlier schedule released July 23, 2020 •
At this time there has been no new correspondence from NCSAA regarding athletics for K-8 grade. We will notify our families when updates are given.
]What can you do to encourage your student athlete while we are away from practice and competition?
While no new significant updates regarding athletics have come out there are still things student athletes can be doing to be prepared once restrictions are lifted. They include but are not limited to:
Focus on academics - we are nearly done with the first quarter. Your athletes' academics can impact their athletic eligibility. Be sure all work is completed and turned in on time. Check Infinite Campus regularly to monitor academic progress.
Work on personal fitness - making sure your athlete is conditioning and prepared for when we return will allow them to be ready to play and compete. With proposed seasons being shortened to six weeks there may be little time to condition and be competition ready. Being properly conditioned will help to prevent injuries and burnout.
Complete required registration and documentation - Register My Athlete (High School Student Athletes Only) should be ready to start accepting registration and documentation from Sloan Canyon athletes in the next few weeks. More information will be provided once registration is open. This process must be completed in order to practice and compete in any High School Sport. Registration must be completed annually and will not roll over from last school year.
As previously mentioned in our past correspondence, all state and local guidelines will be followed as we plan for return to athletics as restitution are lifted. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we prepare for athletics to return to Sloan Canyon.
