Avoiding an Exercise Rut: Importance of Cross Training Ever feel like you might be in an exercise rut? It's not just boring; it can also set you back from reaching your goals and make you more at risk for injury. Here are some things to understand about the importance of cross training. Whether you are a runner, a weightlifter, or enjoy another type of regular exercise, it's important to switch it up sometime. While finding an exercise you enjoy and will do regularly is important, once you've got your routine down, you may want to incorporate other types of activity. The Mayo Clinic recommends that you consider trying activities that use muscles in different parts of your body, for example, walking or running and strength training. Cross training also reduces the risk of overusing or injuring one particular muscle or area of the body. Cross training, when used effectively, can also help you improve your ability with the primary exercise you enjoy. For example, runners can benefit from building strength by lifting weights, while weight lifters can benefit from the flexibility yoga provides. Another key benefit of cross training is active recovery. While rest days are a very important part of any workout schedule, alternating heavy exercise with lighter activities can help you get more out of your workouts. Light workouts after periods of intense exercise can help the body recover faster. Check out some of the great cross training options in our May Group Fitness schedule!

CORE FOCUS TOGETHER
HEALTHY CONNECTIONS Elaine Rabold and Joyce Droulliard have been coming to the Y together for more than 2 years, often 3 times a week. Moving in the water is best way to get the exercise they need. Their routine helps keep them accountable to each other and the good company makes it worthwhile. Tyler Howell is a regular participant in Water Fitness class on Mondays which returned to the Y schedule last month. He sticks around for a soak in the hot tub and good conversation with lifeguard Martin Peper. Martin enjoys hearing Tyler's insteresting life stories and sharing a few laughs together.

MAY IS SAFETY AROUND WATER MONTH May is Safety Around Water Month. The world is 70% water and kids are 100% curious. Our lakes are finally open for the summer and we want to encourage families to teach water safety and swimming skills to kids. YMCA Swim Lessons help adults, kids, and families learn an important life skill and support them in gaining the knowledge, ability, and stamina to become strong and confident swimmers. Meet Ali! She signed up for a session of 8, 30-minute private swimming lessons. She started the first swimming lesson unsure of the deep end and wearing three blocks on her flotation belt. By the 2nd lesson she was exploring the deep end with confidence and working on kicking and body alignment with breath control. By the third lesson, she was down to 2 float blocks and experimenting with breaststroke/symmetrical paddle and dolphin kick. By the 4th lesson she was down to one block on her front and confidently swimming the elementary backstroke and alternating paddle on her back. By the 5th lesson she was not wearing a float belt at all and swimming full lengths on her back and working on front crawl and rudimentary breathing. By lesson 6 she was swimming full lengths on her front and her back without any floatation, treading water, and floating on her back with ease. By lesson number 7 she was confident retrieving items from the bottom of the pool from various depths and jumping into the deep end, swimming several yards and recovering to a back float. By the last lesson, number 8, she passed the deep end test and took her first ride down the water slide as a reward. Here she is showing off her deep end wrist band! Way to go Ali! Private Lessons packages are available today online or by contacting the YMCA. More swim lesson offerings are coming to the YMCA this fall.
