OUTDOOR NATURE PLAYROOM UNDER CONSTRUCTION The YMCA is happy to announce that the new Outdoor Playground is under development. Several features are already in place and many playground features will be arriving in July for installation such as a bridge, tables and benches, a play kitchen, a playhouse, the treehouse and hideaway pictured on the right. The project will be utilized by the inclusive child care programs of the YMCA and will be open to all community kids because the YMCA and the grantors understand the importance of nature play for children's development. Through nature-based experiences, children will develop across all domains. Evidence suggests that experiences in unstructured play in a natural setting aids in cognitive, physical, and social development. Nature supports creativity and problem solving and children who play in green areas tend to play more cooperatively. Finally, studies have shown that schools that use outdoor classrooms and other forms of nature-based experiential education support significant student gains in social studies, science, language arts, and math. The site is located on Community Center grounds south of the baseball fields and north of the community gardens in a wooded area. The Outdoor Playground is funded by several grants and funders: The Lone Wolf Foundation, The Cook County Community Fund, Great Place Project from the Cook County Chamber of Commerce, Northland Foundation, Lloyd K Johnson Foundation, and the Arrowhead Round Up from the Arrowhead Cooperative. Volunteers are needed! If you have time and like to put equipment together, we need your skills to assemble the features. Get involved by contacting Emily Marshall who will coordinate times as the features arrive: emarshall@cookcountyymca.org.

GARDEN FEATURES SURROUND THE TODDLER PARK Summer Kids Camp has been helping to plant flowers and beautify the space surrounding the toddler park. Jen Trowbridge is overseeing the installation of multiple pots and raised planters that now grace the space in front of the YMCA. The planters were painted with pictures of local animals last year with the help of the summer camp kids. The pots contain a variety of plants that will support pollinators such as bees and butterflies and provide edible food that the kids can both care for and eat during the season. This project was funded by the Great Place Project funds from the Chamber of Commerce and the Cook County Whole Food Co-op. Watch for more features to be added soon!
