about union academy
Union Academy (UA) focuses on Challenge, Character and Community, preparing its students for success in college or a career of their choice. The School has more than 20 years of success, serving almost 2,000 students in grades K-12. Union Academy is a tuition-free NC public charter school, enrolling students through a public lottery.
As one of the largest mission-driven charter schools in North Carolina, UA believes excellent academic preparation for college and character development for life are not mutually exclusive. UA prepares young people for college and for lives of purpose and service.
UA is a National School of Character, a Charlotte Observer Regional Top Workplace in 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2020, and the 2020 Charlotte Business Journal #1 Healthiest Employer.

Head of School
Union Academy students receive the benefit of high expectations for academic performance. Realizing that students have individual strengths, weaknesses, and varied intelligences, we have created an environment with maximum teacher flexibility so that students can benefit from individual attention. Research indicates that student learning should be measurably improved with the use of teacher-directed, subject-based instruction following constructivist principles. Union Academy focuses on teaching the basics to mastery, enriching the whole curriculum with the arts, integrating character education throughout the system, embracing individual differences, and using community resources outside the classroom for learning.
We employ a wide variety of methods which include: whole and small group instruction, individual and peer tutoring, inclusion, interest centers, structured enrichment and remediation opportunities, long-term projects, projects that cross grade levels, as well as curriculum-based field trips. We make use of research, technology, and community resources. Union Academy encourages innovative teaching methods and commits itself to increased professional development opportunities, as well as affording our teachers flexibility and freedom from certain standardized procedures, allowing time for collaboration, creativity, and innovation.
When asked why most staff, parents, and students choose Union Academy the answer is most often Character Education. We take every opportunity to collaborate with students, staff and families to ensure that Character Education remains a priority for our school. Being a National School of Character is a privilege and distinction for Union Academy. We are so lucky to have a board and administration that values this, and teachers and staff who execute it everyday.

"UA empowers students to become leaders in their classrooms, in clubs, and on athletic teams."
Union Academy is dedicated to building strong community relationships and awareness, both locally and globally. We believe that our students will be more prepared for life and become better contributing citizens by serving those around them and participating in community service at every grade level.
K-8th grade students participate in school led community service each year. Students visit with the elderly, make blankets for the Ronald McDonald House, serve meals at the local shelter, and plant flowers at the local nursing home. Whether they are kindergarten students or middle school students, everyone serves and learns an appreciation for helping the community.
High school students complete at least 10 service hours each year with community non-profit organizations. The remainder of the required hours may also be completed at a community organization OR in meaningful volunteer service. Students must complete at least 105 hours in their four years of high school; students who double their hours are recognized at graduation.

We are an uplifting community with a focus on excellence that inspires, challenges, and supports the thinkers, dreamers, and doers who are passionate about sharing their creative works.
UA Visual Arts:
Visual art and Union Academy have a long history. Students K-12 have formal visual art classes taught by art professionals as well as art rich project based activities led by their core teachers. Art classes and class art projects engage the student emotionally and cognitively, developing the whole student. Union Academy has always valued and understands the importance of art education and the development of the whole child.

As a K-12 school, we believe students learn best when they work together and participate in school-wide events. The annual Spirit Parade is just one of the many activities that create a community atmosphere.

building tomorrow's leaders
Union Academy began in 2000 as a K-4 school in the Old Shiloh Elementary building that was no longer used by UCPS. As the school grew by a grade level every year, we quickly outgrew the small building. Mobile classrooms were added, older students were moved to a warehouse, and in 2004 the first of many new buildings was completed on land donated by a grandparent. In 2018, the dream to educate all students in grades K-12 on one campus came to fruition. Charter schools do not receive money from the state for buildings, so we are extremely proud of our campus and the dedication from our parents, staff and community members who made our dream a reality.
