IF You Have an Ice Dam: 1. Remove the ice dam by breaking it free in small chucks. Do NOT use an ax or other sharp tool, you could cut through the shingles. Instead, tap lightly with a blunt mallet. This is slow, dangerous work, so hire someone experienced at roofing. Even if you do it safely, the chunks of ice can take pieces of shingles with them IF YOU HAVE WATER DAMAGE IN YOUR HOME You never really know the extent of the damage, don't let your home get moldy let the experts take a look! Prevent Ice Dams - Excess heat moving from the attic through the roof rapidly melts snow. Once the melt water touches the cold eaves it quickly freezes and forms an ice dam. Make sure your attic is well ventilated to allow good exchanged of cold air for warm air. Ensure that there is adequate insulation and that all gaps which let warm air into the attic from the house are sealed. Ventilate Eaves and Ridges - Place baffles at the eaves to maintain clean path for the airflow from the soffits. Cap the Hatch - Unsealed attic hatch or whole-house fan is a massive opening for heat to escape. Cover them with weatherstripped caps. Add Insulation - More insulation on the attic floor keeps the heat where it belongs!!

DIVERT WATER AWAY FROM YOUR HOME - Downspout extensions and sump pump systems can divert water away from your foundation, which will help protect your foundation from water seepage. Any method that can help divert water away form your foundation will be beneficial. Clean your gutters regularly, if water is going over your gutters that means the water is going straight down and putting water pressure on your foundation.
