DICKINSON RECOGNIZED BY
CIO APPLICATIONS AS A TOP 10 TELEMATICS SOLUTIONS PROVIDER
CIO NAMES DICKINSON A TOP 10 TELEMATICS SOLUTIONS PROVIDER continued
Dickinson Fleet Services has been recognized by CIO Applications as a Top 10 Telematics Solutions Provider. A featured article is included in the CIO Applications Special Edition Magazine on Telematics. It includes a conversation with our very own Mike Dickinson, Executive Officer, and Pat Fife, CIO of Dickinson Fleet Services. In this article, these 2 key leaders of our company share their insights into our value proposition and the quality fleet management solutions that we offer in the telematics space. You can read the full article here and see our featured page on the CIO Applications website here, but we also wanted to share some of the highlights below…
SETTING THE STANDARD FOR TELEMATICS
With technology advancing, Fleet Managers must ensure that their fleet is efficient and safe with minimal expenses and idle time. We’ve been able to establish our company as a leader in the mobile fleet service industry by focusing on delivering excellence in preventative maintenance that encompasses quality, communication, safety, and technology.
“Our fleets of trucks that carry out in-field vehicle repairs are connected through a custom, in-house field service app. This app communicates to our back-office systems with interfaces to capture real-time information about the repairs and maintenance being done on customers’ equipment in the field and bill that up to our customers. On the backside, our customer-facing portal, WebWrench, an online maintenance cost tracking software, allows customers to log in and see all their information that passes through our systems, enabling them to track and control their maintenance costs. From preventive maintenance scheduling and invoicing to observing repair history, we ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. That gives Dickinson an edge over its competition,” said Pat Fife. Continued >
WHY DEVELOP OUR OWN APPLICATIONS?
As our company began to grow, we knew we needed to find something that would allow us to operate on a national scale. There was a growing need to transmit information efficiently between our technicians, our customers, and our home office. Our Executive Officer, Mike Dickinson captured this vision in the article…
“We needed to have the ability to work with the customers’ top parameters for maintenance and specialized vehicles by creating and developing our own systems. We were able to create customizable PM forms and customized reporting specific to the fleets and the customer needs of data reconciliation. It was critical to have that ability to react quickly to our customer’s needs,” said Mike Dickinson.
OUR APPROACH TO TELEMATICS & TRUCK MAINTENANCE
At Dickinson Fleet Services, we pride ourselves on taking a unique, forward-thinking approach to our business. We put ourselves in the position to be very agile in the truck repeat and maintenance space by investing in technology resources in-house, rather than outsourcing it. Here’s the way we see things…
“We are an IT company that focuses on truck maintenance, always looking for ways to develop and enhance our service on a frame with a hint of innovative ideas and technologies. All our systems are developed internally that allow us to react quickly towards customer needs in order to stay ahead of the competition and start development well in advance,” said Mike Dickinson.
PROCESSING CLIENT INFORMATION IN THE TELEMATICS SPACE
We want to use technology to our advantage. This means providing information in real-time during every step of the process – from scheduling to completion. With each new tool we develop, our efficiency and communication are improved throughout the truck maintenance and repair process.
“Since we perform repairs in the field, we capture customers’ information from cradle to grave. From scheduling to initiating work at the customer’s location, to sending push reports of the work performed to the customer and reporting that bulk of information, the customer can keep an archive of all the tasks performed using our fleet management system,” said Pat Fife

THE TOP TECH RESULTS ARE IN
At Dickinson Fleet Services, we recently wrapped up our 4th Annual Top Tech competition.
This year, we featured 3 separate divisions with winners that were crowned in their respective categories of competition...
As an industry, we’ve spent a lot of time talking about the shortage of professional drivers. The fact is, there’s also an increasing shortage of well-trained technicians. A recent Department of Labor report showed that employment of diesel service technicians and mechanics is expected to grow by 12% from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations. Additionally, the report conducted by TMC, a division of American Trucking Associations, showed that 67,000 technicians will be needed to replace retired workers, and 75,000 new mechanics must be added to meet additional demand by 2022. Needless to say, this widening gap poses a problem.

How to Fix It
It all starts with education. Students, parents and schools need to understand the career opportunities that are available in this industry. As technology has evolved, so has the image of the technician.
If younger men and women are able to get more hands-on experience to explore their mechanical aptitude, we can further spark curiosity among the next generation. This means building partnerships within the education system for internships, apprenticeships training opportunities and more.
Dickinson Fleet Tech School
At Dickinson Fleet, we believe in our technicians. We insist on giving them the tools and the training needed to provide the best mobile truck repair and maintenance services to our clients.
It’s for this reason that we are taking the reins on the above ideas and launching our own Dickinson Fleet Tech School. This will give technicians entering the industry the opportunity to acquire industry-leading skills and experience in a short amount of time without any education debt. In fact, paid training will be offered and graduates completing the program will have a guaranteed job opportunity with our company.
Our vision for the Dickinson Fleet Tech School not onlyallows us to address the technician shortage head-on, but also ensure that we’re growing our team with well-training, fully committed individuals who will continue to make us the premier independent Mobile Fleet Maintenance company in the country. ◼
Why Is This Happening?
One reason is that as older technicians are retiring or leaving the industry, new technicians aren’t coming in at a sustainable rate. The simple answer to why new technicians aren’t coming in is that the technical skills aren’t being taught or promoted in our education system like they have in the past. While there are some technical schools out there, many leave graduates with high amounts of debt and limited opportunities. This equates to technicians entering the industry at lower than expected pay and job hopping around the first few years until many abandon the occupation altogether. Continued...

FLEETEC VS. TRADITIONAL TECH SCHOOLS
The FleeTec program differs from traditional technical schools in this industry that often take several years to complete and can leave graduates with debt approaching $40,000-$50,000. With these traditional schools, unfortunately, many times graduates are unable to find jobs paying adequate wages.
With the FleeTec model, graduates will be debt-free, highly skilled and able to enter the industry with a guaranteed premium job opportunity. Further, with the Dickinson Fleet Services Learn to Earn program, new technicians will have the ability to increase their pay substantially over their first 24-36 months and beyond. This puts technicians on an excellent career path with a growing company full of continued advancement opportunity.
THE DICKINSON FLEET PHILOSOPHY
The technicians at Dickinson Fleet Services are committed, highly-skilled individuals who want to get the most out of their career. We invest heavily in our technicians just as they invest in our company and customers. With the launch of FleeTec, we’re looking to build the next generation of elite technicians and provide an incredible career opportunity with no education debt.
You simply won’t find a better technician training program that combines an accelerated course, perfecting industry-leading skills with incredible career opportunities at no financial training or education costs. If you have mechanical aptitude and want to work for a company that’s willing to heavily invest in a bright future for you and your family, then this is the right opportunity for you! ◼

Jose Feliciano has known for most of his life that he wanted to work in the automotive mechanic industry. Years later, he has not only successfully achieved this goal, but has created a new standard of excellence for others in his field.
While in college, Jose began taking auto mechanic classes to determine if that career path was a good fit. He found that he struggled with a traditional university format for learning, but that he excelled in more hands-on opportunities. He looked for jobs at small, local transmission shops and discovered that he had an aptitude for diagnosing auto issues and creating a solution.
When he learned of an opportunity to work at Dickinson Fleet Services, Jose decided to take the chance to show off his skills as a technician.
“I was a little apprehensive at first, because I had never worked for a large company,” Jose said as he recalled his beginnings at DFS. “But since day one at Dickinson, I knew this was the right career path for me.”
Jose began his new job as a heavy truck technician who was primarily tasked with smaller jobs as he gained experience and knowledge in his role. Soon, his consistently high quality of work was noticed by his superiors, and he was given a large account to work on. His diagnostics work was unparalleled and virtually always accurate down to the last detail, which prompted his superiors to give him more complicated jobs. Instead of being tasked with preventative maintenance only, he began to complete difficult and complex repairs, demonstrating his considerable skill every time.
Now, as a Lead Tech in Orlando, Jose has set his sights on becoming the best in his field nationwide – and Dickinson Fleet Services is doing their part to help.
In 2016, DFS began to host an annual company-wide competition to determine which of their talented team members was the Top Tech in each of three departments. The winner and runner-up in each division advance to the TMC SuperTech event, in which the top technicians from trucking companies across the country compete to see who can prove their skills in a combination of written and hands-on challenges.
For the last four years, Jose has competed alongside his colleagues in the Top Tech contest – and has qualified for TMC SuperTech every time.
“In the first year of Top Tech, I came in second place,” Jose recalled. “And I really started thinking about how I could get better the next year.”
It is this attitude of always seeking to improve his personal best that has brought Jose the honor of qualifying for TMC SuperTech every year – and this year, he achieved a new goal of becoming the Top Tech in the Heavy Truck division at DFS. Now, he is off to TMC SuperTech in September to represent Dickinson Fleet Services once again.
For Jose, the Top Tech competition is about more than just winning his division. In a manner true to the work ethic he has upheld for years, Jose’s first priority is using the competition as a means of bettering his own skills and delivering excellent service for every job he does.
“This competition really provides some of the best hands-on training,” said Jose. “The confidence gained from competing each year carries over into what we do on a daily basis for our clients.”
Along with increased confidence, the Top Tech competition provides ample opportunities to learn about new techniques and increased knowledge of industry updates. By fostering an environment that encourages daily learning and giving one hundred percent to each job, DFS has created a team full of people who are constantly striving to make each day a little better than the last.
As TMC SuperTech 2019 approaches, Jose feels that he and the rest of the representatives from Dickinson Fleet Services are better prepared than ever. In fact, he and his colleagues have become so well-acquainted with the TMC SuperTech event that they have started to coach new competitors from DFS who haven’t experienced this level of competition in the past. His best piece of advice for novice competitors is to not get hung up on any one particular challenge in the event, but to treat each new station as a new opportunity for professional growth.
“Treat it as a learning experience that will carry over into your job when you get back,” Jose said. “The more people who are involved, the more we can all do better as a company.”
The competition is looming fast – but Jose and his colleagues are more than ready. ◼

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: JOSE FELICIANO continued
What to expect from
It’s no secret that Dickinson Fleet Services places a priority on building a team full of people who value excellence and always strive to learn more. That’s one of the reasons they started their Top Tech competition, in which technicians can compete in three different categories to win the honor of being named the Top Tech of their division.
Since 2016, the Top Tech competition has been not only a source of inspiration for every tech to do his or her best, but also an opportunity for everyone to improve their skills and learn new ones each year.
With each competition, the top techs qualify in either the Heavy Truck, Light and Medium Duty Truck, or the Trailer division. Aside from bragging rights, the top competitors in each division also receive the honor of going on to the TMC SuperTech event, a national competition that invites technicians to test their skills in series of tests and stations that lasts for two days.
This year, contestants can expect to have all their knowledge and experience tested as they work their way through each challenge. Starting bright and early at 7:00 AM, the techs begin with a series of qualifying written exams. These exams can make or break your chances for the rest of the competition, and it’s important to give them as much consideration as any other part of the weekend.
From there, technicians begin to show off their skills through various hands-on skill challenges in additional qualifying rounds. Lasting until 4:00 PM, it is the results of these rounds that will decide which competitors move on to the challenges in the next part of the contest. Once the results of each competitor have been determined, TMC SuperTech hosts a reception to announce the finalists.
Day two begins with additional stations designed to test skills in specific areas of specialty – the Trailer and Light/Medium Vehicle Technician tracks and the Traditional (Heavy-Duty) Track Hands-on Skills Challenge finals wrap up the competition for the second day.
While not everyone can win, every tech who competes is ranked in their division, giving them the opportunity to see how far they have come since the previous competition. On Tuesday evening, all winners and rankings are announced at a banquet hosted by TMC SuperTech. But to pass the time until the results are announced, TMC SuperTech also hosts a technician training fair, giving techs the chance to learn about new developments in their field, as well as classes that can improve their skills and offer continuing education credit for those who attend.
The rest of the event is designed to promote education and networking opportunities, as techs are invited to attend Technical Sessions and Study Group sessions, along with luncheons and evening festivities. It all comes to a close with the official conclusion of the yearly meeting – and ideas about what to look for in 2020.
If you’re not already fired up for this year’s TMC SuperTech, you’re running out of time! The event begins on Sunday, September 15th. Don’t miss your chance to find out the results – check back at www.dickinsonfleet.com after the competition to learn who placed in the top rankings of each division. ◼
