We are delighted to present award-winning artist and author Catherine Rayner’s solo exhibition The Dog Show at Sarah Wiseman Gallery this May. The theme of dogs for the exhibition was a suggestion from Catherine. She finds dogs infinitely inspiring to draw, perhaps more so since becoming a dog owner herself, to Otto the miniature dachshund. ‘I’ve always loved dogs.’ she says. ‘As subjects for art or illustrations, I love the variety of breeds, the varying sizes, their expressions, textures of their fur…and the relationships they have with their owners – all of it. I’m very excited to be working on this exhibition!’ For the The Dog Show, Catherine has enjoyed experimenting with new materials and in addition to works on paper and screenprints, visitors will see doggy portraits on board, using a variety of paints and techniques.

Catherine’s love of dogs inspired her picture book Smelly Louie (published in 2014) about a loveable dog who has his very own, rather un-loveable Special Smell! Smelly Louie went on to win The Peter’s Book of the Year in 2015, and was shortlisted for the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal and shortlisted for the English 4-11 Picture Book Awards in the same year. Sarah Wiseman Gallery has worked with Catherine Rayner since 2006 when Sarah spotted her work at an art fair in Edinburgh. The Dog Show exhibition is her fourth solo show with the gallery and her works have also appeared in numerous group exhibitions. Gallery director Sarah Wiseman says: 'Catherine’s new collection will bring all the love people have for their dogs into the gallery. The works will celebrate the immense joy and companionship dogs bring to their families with their individual personalities. The gallery has always been a dog friendly place and we love meeting customer’s furry family members. I think this exhibition will be enormous fun!’
Please join us for the opening of The Dog Show on Saturday 7th May. Meet the artist Catherine Rayner at the gallery 12:30pm - 4pm. At 12:30pm we will hold a prize presentation for our wonderful Draw A Dog Art Competition winners! .

'Hope and Avery' in progress in the printing studio
New Silkscreen print editions
Collectors and fans of Catherine Rayner’s work will know that she has always been a keen silkscreen printmaker. The Covid-19 pandemic put a stop to this aspect of her work temporarily as it saw the Edinburgh Printmakers studio close during the lockdowns. Once it reopened, printing her complex editions was for a while quite tricky. Catherine is never one to be held back and was determined to release new silkscreen editions alongside the works on paper and board in The Dog Show exhibition. We are thrilled to present the swimming otters Hope and Avery and, of course, a number of her signature hares! Created in multiple layers, silkscreen printing is a lengthy and complex hand-printing process, with each colour representing a separate screen to be printed in order to produce the finished image. Once all the layers are complete, each print is hand-finished by Catherine before she adds the title, edition number and her signature.

Draw A Dog children's art Competition
We were thrilled to receive over 200 entries from talented young artists aged 4-11 across Oxfordshire for our Draw A Dog Art Competition The standard was incredibly high and our judges (Catherine Rayner, Allyson Austin and Mychael Barratt) had a very tough job selecting the winners, so much so that they created a new category - Judge's Favourite! During the exhibition, the winners, runners up and judge's favourites will have their work on show in the gallery. On the exhibition opening day Saturday 7th May at 12:30pm we will hold a prize presentation to celebrate the winners, runners-up and judge's favourites!
Catherine Rayner and Sarah Wiseman in Catherine 's studio in Edinburgh.
Award-winning author, artist and illustrator Catherine Rayner is best known for her animated depictions of wild and domestic animals, showing off the charisma and character of these creatures. Catherine Rayner has been exhibiting at Sarah Wiseman Gallery for over fifteen years and in that time we've been thrilled to see the leaps her career has taken. Using liquid acrylics and silkscreen printmaking, her lively and expressive line describes movement whilst playing with scale and space. By placing the animal to one side of the paper for example, she suggests that it has just strayed into the frame and at any moment might just wander off again. Her silkscreens are made expressively and organically, often including up to thirty layers of colour. Her experience as a children's book illustrator allows the viewer to observe each creature and imagine the events in its life. Its posture, pose and expression has a poignancy and creates a sense of curiosity in the viewer as in a new story unfolding. Catherine Rayner graduated in 2004 from Edinburgh College of Art where she studied Illustration. She published her first picture book Agustus and His Smile in 2006. She won the Best New Illustrator Award at the Booktrust Early Years Awards and was also shortlisted for the V&A Illustration Awards in the same year.
