Call to Worship

All are invited to read the bold-faced type; the lay reader will read the unbolded type. How beautiful it is when kindred live together in unity! Let us walk together as children of light and love. Light of the world, shine upon us with your Holy Spirit. Gather in our midst, that we may know your presence. Guide us into unity and love, That we may be a blessing of unity and love for the world.

Scripture
John 20:19-31
When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.†After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.†When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.†But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.†But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.†A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.†Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.†Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!†Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.†Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

Prayer of Confession
Christ Jesus, you know us in our heart of hearts. You know our doubts and questions, our fractures and divisions. You know the shadows that tempt us, and yet you still shine your light within. Your light invites us and welcomes us back to your path of peace and love. Help us embrace the journey you set before us, That we may walk in the light and live in unity.
Silent Confession
Word of Assurance
God is faithful in love and grace. Even when we falter, God’s love is strong enough to bring us back into the light of forgiveness and grace.
In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen.
Gloria Hymnal #102, vs. 3 (alt.)
All glory be to God, all praise and thanks be given; Whose Son and Spirit reign as one in highest Heaven; Our one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.
Anthem

“Doubting Thomas†— 15th c. French tune, arr. Mark Schweizer; words 15th c. French, tr. John Mason Neale
O sons and daughters, let us sing! The King of Heaven, the glorious King O'er death and hell rose triumphing, Alleluia!
When Thomas first the tidings heard, How they had seen the risen Lord, He doubted the disciples' word, Alleluia.
"My pierced side, O Thomas, see; My hands, my feet, I show to thee, Not faithless, but believing be," Alleluia!
No longer Thomas then denied, He saw the feet, the hands, the side, "Thou art my Lord and God," he cried; Alleluia!
How blest are they who have not seen, And yet whose faith has constant been, For they eternal life shall win, Alleluia!
Children's Time
Children of all ages are invited to join us in this special moment.
Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Offertory

“Now the Green Blade Rises†— Traditional French carol, arr. Simon Andrews;
words by John Macleod Campbell Crum Now the green blade riseth from the buried grain, Wheat that in dark earth many days has lain; Love lives again, that with the dead has been: Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green.
In the grave they laid him, love whom men had slain, Thinking that never he would wake again. Laid in the earth like grain that sleeps unseen: Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green,
Forth he came at Easter, like the risen grain, He that for three days in the grave had lain. Quick from the dead my risen Lord is seen: Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green.
When our hearts are wintry, grieving, or in pain, Thy touch can call us back to life again; Fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been: Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green.

As we have continued to take the first steps of activism—to educate ourselves—we have wondered how we might continue our advocacy with further action. In April, we are going to continue to focus on this question. All are invited to join us for three weeks as we outline different ways that we might work towards more active advocacy.
