*Call to Worship
Written by Joanna Harader (alt.)
Inspired by Psalm 23

All are invited to read the bold-faced type; the reader will read the unbolded type.

In the darkest valley; at the banquet table; in the hard work of life; at the moments of ease; in our day-to-day reality; on Sunday mornings; when we worship, listen, and pay attention; with every step we take — goodness and mercy follow us; our cups overflow.

Third Sunday after Epiphany
To hear the word
Scripture
John 1:19-28
This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?†He confessed and did not deny it, but he confessed, “I am not the Messiah.†And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?†He said, “I am not.†“Are you the prophet?†He answered, “No.†Then they said to him, “Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?†
He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’†as the prophet Isaiah said. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. They asked him, “Why, then, are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?†John answered them, “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal.†This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.

The Word of God for the People of God.
Thanks be to God.

“Shed a Little Light†— James Taylor, arr. Greg Jasperse
Let us turn our thoughts today to Martin Luther King And recognize that there are ties between us. All men and women living on the earth Ties of hope and love, sister and brotherhood That we are bound together in our desire to see the world Become a place in which our children can grow free and strong We are bound together by the task that stands before us And the road that lies ahead We are bound, and we are bound
There is a feeling like the clenching of a fist There is a hunger in the center of the chest There is a passage through the darkness and the mist And though the body sleeps the heart will never rest Shed a little light, oh Lord so that we can see, just a little light, oh Lord. Want to stand it on up, want to walk it on down Gonna shed a little light, oh Lord
11 am
Anthem (cont'd)
Can't get no light from a dollar bill Don't give me no light from a TV screen, oh no, no When I open my eyes, I want to drink my fill from the well on the hill I know you know what I mean Shed a little light, oh Lord so that we can see, oh yeah Just a little light, oh Lord Want to stand it on up, want to walk it on down Gonna shed a little light, oh Lord
Children's Time
Children of all ages are invited to join us in this special moment. We ask the
children to remain with their families in the sanctuary after children's time for
Rev. Dr. Stephen Cady's final sermon at Asbury First.
Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Musical Reflection
Duane Prill, Organ
“Hózhó†— Connor Chee

From the composer: “The piece was inspired by the traditional Navajo concept of Hózhó (‘balance and beauty’) which permeates our culture and reflects the state of harmony that binds all things together in the universe. My grandmother taught me that keeping balance and harmony in my life started with the simplest things. The idea was that if I could keep balance in those fundamental things, it would permeate my spirit and inspire my life as a whole. When I feel overwhelmed, organizing the simple things welcomes balance back into my life.†
The tranquil opening melody is followed by an unsettled, less harmonious middle section. Following this, the original melodic material returns, only backwards. The listener is returned to the original content, which has been transformed by the experience.

“How Can I Keep from Singing†— Robert Lowry, arr. Andy Beck
My life flows on in endless song above earth’s lamentation. I hear the real though far-off hymn that hails a new creation. No storm can shake my inmost calm, I hear the music ringing. It sounds an echo in my soul. How can I keep from singing?
What though the tempest ‘round me roars, I know the truth, it liveth. What though the darkness ‘round me close, songs in the night it giveth. No storm can shake my inmost calm, I hear the music ringing. Since love is lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing?

The church is a family...
We feel sorrow in your leaving, yet we rejoice with you in anticipation of this new phase of your life. We will miss your love and support, yet we know you will add much to the lives of those who will be your new church family, as you have added much to our lives. We will pray for you and for the whole family of God.
Prayers
Choral Benediction and Laying on of Hands
The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord lift his countenance upon you and give you peace, the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you. Amen. (Words: Numbers 6:24; Music by Peter Lutkin)
*Litany
As you journey, know that the love and prayers of this community go with you. As you experience the pain of change, may you also know the blessings of growth. As you walk through the good times and bad, know that you are sheltered
by God’s loving arms. As you face every new challenge, remember that you do not have to face it alone. As you bravely step out to do more good in a new place, let everything you have
gained here equip you and guide you. As you ponder and remember all we have shared, may the peace of Christ
 reign in your hearts. Amen.

Meetings & Rehearsals January 21 –January 27
Our values represent a description of our guiding principles.
These statements are standards of behavior, which are inherent in all we do.
Open to All We believe we are all equal in God’s eyes and are all one in Christ. We extend hospitality and encourage full participation for all regardless of any perceived defining characteristic. Worship We believe we are at our best when we connect to God together through preaching, prayer, and song.
We strive for excellence in all we do, especially in our worship experience. Community We believe we are better together; fellowship and care are keys to love and life. Outreach We believe everyone deserves hope and fullness of life. We endeavor to practice mercy and work for justice in our local and extended community. Discipleship We believe we—adults, youth, and children alike—are called to grow in our faith both as a community and as individuals through education, regular worship, meaningful fellowship, a commitment to service,
and celebrating rites of passage together. Generosity We believe what we have is a gift from God. We share our gifts with an open heart to help meet needs
at Asbury First, the Rochester community, and throughout the world. Stewardship We believe we must care for the human, physical, and financial resources with which we have been entrusted.
