Laundry is one of those inescapable household chores we have to do. We like to wear clothes, sleep in clean beds, and dry ourselves off with a fresh towel once out the shower. You will use your washing machine at least once a week, if not daily for larger households.
This is why it is such an important purchasing decision. It will be one of your hardest working home appliances. Depending on its features, it can also make laundry a whole lot easier.
What should you consider then when purchasing a washing machine? I’m going to break down the features that I look for when making a purchasing decision. After going through this list, you should be ready to choose the best washing machine for your needs.
There are two types of washing machines: front loader and top loader. As the name implies, a front loader is loaded from the front, whilst a top loader is loaded from the top. Each has their own advantages, depending on your needs and personal preferences.
Front loaders can fit under countertops and have a smaller capacity. Top loaders are free standing and have a larger capacity. Having owned both types of washing machines, I can compare between the two.
My husband and I bought our first washing machine when we moved in together as a couple. It was just the two of us, living in a smaller apartment, and it was to fit under our kitchen countertop. We opted for an LG front loader, which faithfully cleaned our clothes for the next few years. It moved between apartments and homes, finding a spot under counter in our kitchen. It was a relatively large front loader, holding 8 kg of laundry.
As our family grew, I was finding I was doing multiple loads of washing a day to keep up with the laundry. When we moved to our new home, and had a place for a washing machine in our garage, I opted to buy an LG top loader. I was now able to do fewer loads in the larger machine, as well as clean bulkier items such as duvets and blankets.

PRODUCT REVIEW OF THE LG SAPIENCE TOP LOADER WITH SMART INVERTER
So you are in the market for a new washing machine? You may be wishing to upgrade your current washing machine or are purchasing for the first time. Either way, my list of what to look for when buying a washing machine will help you make that all important decision. I also review the LG Sapience Top Loader with Smart Inverter, and put it to the test.
Personal preference and design play their part in choosing a washing machine. I not only want a top loader that does the job, but must also look good while doing it too. After all, I will be looking at the machine every day.
Look for features in a washing machine which give you the best performance, and make laundry easier. Consider the following and whether you need/want these features in your washing machine:
Electricity saving: What is the energy consumption per wash cycle?
Wash programs: Are there wash options for various fabric types? Is there a pre-wash option? Will the laundry be cleaned, even if heavily soiled?
Temperature control: Does it offer temperature options?
Water usage: Can you adjust the water levels and does it have a quick cycle option?
Spin speeds: What are the available spin speeds? Is there an Air Dry option?
Noise: How quiet is the machine?
Cleaning: How easy is it to clean and check the filters?
Delayed start: Can you program the machine to start at a set time?
Features of LG Sapience Top Loader with Smart Inverter
Energy Saving with Smart Inverter Control: Smart Inverter Technology eliminates wasted operation by efficiently controlling energy use.
Smart Motion: Smart Motion is 3 kinds of motions created by Smart Inverter for optimized washing by fabric type.
Turbo Drum™: TurboDrum™ enables the most powerful wash and removes even the toughest dirt through strong water stream of rotating drum and pulsator in the opposite direction.
LoDecibel™ & Less Vibration: Machine is much quieter than my previous top loader. I do find, however, that even though quieter, I do still hear a higher pitch whirring sound.
Including: Adjustable temperatures, adjustable water levels, Air Dry, easy to clean filters, diamond glass wide viewing lid, and delayed start function.
REVIEW OF lg SAPIENCE TOP LOADER WITH SMART INVERTER
Let’s look at your budget and compare the market. How much can you afford to spend on your new washing machine? When setting a realistic budget, do some market research and a needs analysis:
• Compare washing machines by the features they offer, quality of build and customer service.
• What warranty will I receive?
• Does the machine offer durability?
• Does it meet my future household needs?
Features of LG Sapience Top Loader with Smart Inverter
• Packed with features which are energy saving and provide better washing.
• The top loader offers durability and a 10 year motor warranty.
• Smart Diagnosis™ helps diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues, limiting costly and inconvenient service visits.
• Available in 13 kg, 15 kg, and 17 kg wash capacities, the LG Sapience Top Loader with Smart Inverter will accommodate your growing family’s laundry needs.
Now that you have gone through my list of what to look for when buying a washing machine, you should be ready to buy your appliance. To recap, you should now have decided on:
• Type of washing machine;
• Household laundry needs;
• Size of the machine;
• Design preferences;
• Washing features; and
As part of this post, I reviewed the LG Sapience Top Loader with Smart Inverter. Having used LG washing machines for the past 15 years, I do buy and support brand. Being able to do fewer but larger loads of washing has cut down on the number of laundry days each week.
The clothes come out cleaner, even though my toddlers do a good job of dirtying them. I wash duvets and blankets in my top loader, which saves costs on having to take them to the dry cleaner. My electricity usage and water consumption is low, which we check monthly on our Municipal statement.
If you have the space and a growing family, then a top loader is the way to go.
The washing machine was supplied by LG South Africa for review purposes. Check out the Smart Inverter.
Last month, LG kindly sent me a new 15 kg LG Sapience Top Loader with Smart Inverter for review. As a fan of the brand, I was eager to test out the differences between machines, and the Smart Inverter Technology. Check out the Smart Inverter.
Before deciding between the two types, let’s look at your laundry needs, the space available in your home and washing features.
To get a better idea of your laundry needs, I have put together some questions for you to consider. You may or may not have thought about some of these points, and the object is to consider not only your current needs, but also your future laundry needs.
• How many loads of laundry are you currently doing per week?
• Do you do hand washing?
• How much time do you have available to do laundry per week?
• Will your family be expanding in the next few years?
• Do you wash bulkier items such as duvets and blankets?
• Do you own pets and how do you wash their bedding and blankets?
You will need a washing machine that will fit in your home. Take a tape measure and calculate the space in which the washing machine must fit. This will help you determine which type and size of washing machine to buy. You will need to check where your outlet pipes are for installation as well. Speak to a plumber if you require assistance.
Since I have adequate space in my garage for a washing machine, I opted for the larger 15 kg top loader. This has also freed up space in my kitchen.

Date night at home and a Valentine’s Day gift for under R200
valentine's day gift
Is this year going past quickly, or is it just me? It’s already February and that means it is Valentine’s Day coming up very soon. We don’t make a big deal about Valentine’s Day. Well, my husband doesn’t because he isn’t a fan of the commercialisation of the holiday. I, however, like the idea of setting aside a day where you show each other some love in your own special way. As long as both partners are happy and don’t feel pressured by unreasonable expectations of gifts, I think it’s up to each couple to celebrate the occasion how they like.
Once you have kids though, your expectation of date night is a takeaway and an evening spent on the couch watching anything other than kid’s shows. The takeaway will also mostly likely be cold, as it took you an extra hour to get the kids to sleep as they suspected something was up when you tried, and failed, to shower at 5pm and dress in clean clothes.
You don’t mind though, because you would rather be cuddled up at home than have to use your last bit of energy going out or arranging a babysitter. That’s how we feel anyway, and so here is my choice of Valentine’s Day gift for him/her for under R200. A blanket + ShowMax voucher + popcorn + bucket. Add in your favourite drinks, and you have a relaxed Valentine’s Day evening all planned out.
If you don’t already know how to set up ShowMax, please read my easy guide on how it works.
Now that you have ShowMax, you need to select your pick of romantic movies and series to watch. Going through all the options, it’s hard to choose just a few of my favourites to share. There is something for everyone, and many of these movies are old favourites.
Have a happy Valentine’s Day cuddling up to your loved one!

Looking for that perfect gift for the man who is impossible to shop for?
Do you dislike taking your children to public toilets as much as I do?
I remember a conversation I had with friends and parents of older children. We were talking about how exciting it was that we were nearing the end of the nappy stage with Paige.
Our joy was met with words of warning however, that now we were no longer using changing facilities at public toilets, we were going to have to use the adult toilets.
No more outings where we could change nappies in the backseat of the car, or just about anywhere if we had a changing mat. Now we would have to walk/run to the nearest loo, and hope that it is clean enough to use.
So how was I to limit contact of my children’s precious little bums with germs? I needed a toilet sanitizer that was easy and accessible to carry.
Toilet Seat Sanitizer
During a browse through the Faithful-To-Nature website, I spotted a toilet seat sanitizer spray which had rave reviews. The Earthsap Tea Tree spray kills germs using a natural formula that is free of harsh synthetic chemicals.
This toilet seat cleaner can be used both at home and at public restrooms. If your little one is still potty training, and leaves a little mess, use the spray to clean up after them.
