Wilderness Canoe Base
Since its founding days in 1956, Wilderness Canoe Base has been a place that nurtures Christ-centered identity through wilderness experiences. In the Wilderness Witness, Pastor Ham Muus, describes Wilderness Canoe Base as a place, “filled with countless stories of intrigue, dedication and surprise. (Wilderness) is a tale of trust and faith; of wisdom and adversity; of work and renewal. It carries the mark of God’s Spirit. It yearns to be shared, to be discovered."
That call to share and offer opportunities of discovery rings true to this day. As we look to the future of Wilderness Canoe Base we hold firm to the legacy of tradition and look ahead with excitement of the possibilities to come. We hold strong to the mark of God’s Spirit and at the same time are preparing to boldly move into the future with exciting program potential and ministry opportunities that will continue to transform faith in those who spend time here.
In 2014, Lake Wapogasset Lutheran Bible Camp (LWLBC) launched the Renewal campaign to purchase Wilderness Canoe Base from Plymouth Christian Youth Center. The purchase was completed in the fall of 2016, at which point Wilderness Canoe Base formally became owned and operated by LWLBC ministries. Renewal helped position Wilderness in a strong place to move forward with a strategic site plan but it still fell $300,000 short of the fundraising goal.
The Rooted & Renewed campaign will address these two immediate challenges over the next three years:
The first challenge is to raise the remaining $300,000 to complete the purchase of Wilderness Canoe Base. Securing these Rooted & Renewed gifts now will result in a significant savings in fees and allow more funds to be allocated to the site improvement projects in the Cove.
#2 The Cove
The second challenge is a need to upgrade and improve the facilities within the Cove. Our priority in the coming years is to upgrade Snowshoe, Ledge, Queensview and Le Cache. From new roofs, to deck replacements, to essential electrical upgrades, there is significant work that must be done to better accommodate our year-round staff and guests who stay in the Cove.
Over the last several years we have been able to work on several other projects that have continued to improve the way we welcome and serve guests at Wilderness. We purchased 5 new canoes to accommodate a growing canoe trip program, built 2 new Yurts, moved & rebuilt the Mighty Fortress outhouse, and we are completing a renovation and remodel of the beloved Stillwater cabin. The Rooted & Renewed campaign will allow us to continue this momentum with our site and facilities upgrades.
Looking ahead and upon the completion of the Rooted & Renewed Campaign, we have dreams and hopes for a renovation and expansion of Pinecliff, getting electricity out to our Staff Side cabins, and getting to our goal of 100-year round beds. With these projects on the horizon, we are excited to welcome and accommodate guests in new and hospitable ways, and are excited for the potential that these projects hold.
Wilderness Canoe Base is perfectly positioned for growth in expanding retreat and ministry opportunities. These improvements are necessary for us to increase year round usage. Rooted & Renewed will give us the strong starting point we need for future projects in Pinecliff and Staff Side...and more! Call to Action
Our goal is to raise $400,000 dollars over a 3 year pledge period. We invite friends of Wilderness to prayerfully consider a 3 year pledge that starts in 2018 or 2019. Please consider matching your original Renewal pledge with a new Rooted & Renewed pledge today.
The following gift table illustrates the gifts we need to make Rooted & Renewed a reality for Wilderness Canoe Base.
