In collaboration with Partner Agencies, MGCFB has begun two different types of pantries in order to serve a wider population. Student Pantries have been opened in high schools across Bibb County, which allow high school students to discreetly take home food for afterschool and weekend meals. Additionally, MGCFB has started a veterans pantry at Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin. This Veterans Pilot Pantry is the only pantry specifically for veterans in Middle Georgia. With the continued support of our donors, we are able to open more specialized pantries for underserved populations.
New Pantries in New Places
During the school year, children from food insecure households have the opportunity to receive breakfast and lunch at school. However, when school lets out for the summer, children can miss out on up to 10 meals a week without access to school meals. The food banks across Georgia put their heads together in order to remedy this serious problem, thus the summer meals program was opened for children in Georgia during the summer break. Summer meals kick off is every June, and begins the summer meal season. Schools, churches, and food pantries across Georgia supply nutritionally sound meals to children during the summer months. This program functions on the belief that no child should ever go hungry. With the continued support of our donors and volunteers, we are able to keep this much needed program running at full capacity.
Hunger Action Month &
Hunger Action Day
September is Hunger Action Month, and September 14th is Hunger Action Day. The focus of Hunger Action Month is to raise awareness of hunger, and advocate for change. Hunger Action Day, on September 14th serves as the focal point for Hunger Action Month. Throughout the month of September Middle Georgia Community Food Bank will be partnering with local restaurants in order to hold profit sharing fundraisers. Middle Georgia Community Food Bank is now able to store over 4 times more perishable food items thanks to a new industrial-sized freezer. Our new freezer is a total of 4,250 sq ft, and 4 pallet racks high (see picture to right). We started using this freezer in April, and since then we have been able to participate in the Southeastern produce cooperative with other food banks across southeastern region. This means MGCFB has a greater number and variety of produce to distribute to our many partner pantries.
