Beautiful Music at the Spring Concert! On June 1, all our students grades kindergarten through fourth and Haggerty Chorus performed a varied repertoire for a packed audience. Kindergarten sang Ay Zanboore Talaayi, learned from Nika’s parents, Little Swallow, Y A Une Pie, learned from Taylor, and Little Black Bull. First grade sang Come, Let Us Gather in a three-part round, the haunting Sweet William, and ended with the joyous Country Life. Second grade sang the three-part round I Love the Mountains, the beautiful Sylvie, and ended with I Let Her Go-Go. Third grade sang beautifully the spiritual Follow the Drinking Gourd, Obwisana (Goin’ to Ghana), which included folk songs Tue Tue and Obwisana, and Canoe Song, all in harmony. Fourth grade played recorder - the first five songs from Recorder Karate: Hot Cross Buns, Gently Sleep, Merrily We Roll Along, It’s Raining, and Old MacDonald. The concert ended with Haggerty Chorus processing in, singing Now I Walk in Beauty, a Navajo prayer. Next was an Emily Dickinson poem set to music, Bee, I’m Expecting You, then If You Dance, a traditional Hungarian round sung in four parts. Sarah and Maggie played recorder while chorus sang Korean folk song Ahrirang, and the concert ended with Oscar Peterson’s uplifting Hymn to Freedom. In our audience, we are so glad to have welcomed Carolyn Turk, Deputy Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, MaryAnn MacDonald, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education, Andrea Zuñiga, Visual and Performing Arts Director, Susan Holm and Brian Gellerstein, Teachers-in-Charge for VPA, and Laurance Kimbrough, School Committee member. Big thanks to music teachers Shelley Irvin-Kent and Kilian Mooney, and accompanist Armine Donato, for bringing everyone together for a beautiful concert.

JK/Kindergarten Art Show! Tuesday, June 12th 6 - 7PM West Cambridge Youth Center (680 Huron Ave.)
Friends of Haggerty FOH funds made it possible for the fifth graders to visit the Royall House in Medford. This trip was an extension of our social studies curriculum. In addition, FOH has funded some fantastic recent and upcoming events, including STEAM night and the 4th grade field trip to Chinatown.
Music Corner By: Shelley Irvin-Kent, Music Teacher Kindergarten has just learned the concept rhythm. Students are listening for and clapping long and short-short sounds. They can even read patterns like this and match the sounds to songs they know (Bee, bee, bumblebee and Queen, Queen Caroline): First grade has been working on how to sing, read, and write the mi-la jump. Students know that so and mi are copycats, but la isn’t. They also know that la is just one step above so. Ask your child to find the M-L jump in this example. I bet they can figure out the name of the song! Second graders have learned so many pitches that they now know the whole pentatonic scale. Penta means five, so this is a five-note scale with a skip between mi and so. Students can read do-re-mi-so-la in any place on the staff, and lots of songs that have these pitches. See if your child can figure out this song:
Return those Books! Please help your child (children) to return all Haggerty Library books. They have a barcode on the back that reads “Haggerty Library” or “Library Media Center.” Next week Ms. Margaret Macri, librarian at the Collins Branch, will meet with all Haggerty students to promote summer reading programs at CPL. Some classes have been comparing and contrasting folktales from around the world. Read The Hatseller and the Monkeys and The Magic Gourd, both by Baba Wagué Diakité. Then read Caps for Sale and The Magic Porridge Pot by European authors Esphyr Slobodkina and Paul Galdone. Stories are universal! I have enjoyed sharing the joy of books and stories with your children this year. Thank you for your support of the Haggerty Library. Sarah Novogrodsky, Librarian
Staff Appreciation Luncheon - Thank You! On Wednesday, June 6, the Haggerty staff were treated to a many course luncheon by the Haggerty families to show their appreciation for their hard work across the school year. The food was so delicious and plentiful that they are enjoying another lunch today! Thanks to all the parents and caregivers who were able to send in food - and those who were able to volunteer! It was a real team effort and so deeply appreciated by the staff. It was a wonderful treat at this busy time of year!
The chicks are hatching in our JK-Kindergarten classrooms!
