Spaghetti Dinner - SUCCESS! On Wednesday, January 30th, many members of our Haggerty Community came out to support our 5th graders' mission to go on a 2-night field trip to the Farm School in Athol, MA. This is an annual field trip that they need some additional funding for so that every 5th grader can attend, regardless of their ability to pay. In this effort, our 5th graders made homemade meatballs, sauce, spaghetti, and a delicious salad - as well as brownies for dessert. There was also a fun raffle - mainly filled with lots of highly coveted staff prizes! Thanks to all of the staff members who donate their time and energy to create these prizes! Thanks also to the many local companies who donated prizes to help support our 5th graders' cause. Special gratitude to our local Mt. Auburn Star Market for donating all of the meat for our meatballs and to Iggy's for the bread. Special thanks to the Caterina family for making all the meatballs! We extend gratitude to all the families who bought raffle tickets! Thanks also to those who were able to attend the dinner! Our 5th graders are very grateful and excited for their upcoming trip next week!

We have been reading Caldecott award winners and honor books from past years. We have also been discussing the illustrations of many books that are being considered for the award this year. Mid-February will bring the answers!
Race Matters: Courageous Conversations Book Suggestion: You Can Do It! By: Tony Dungy Illustrated by: Amy June Bates Age Range: 4 - 7 years
Outdoor Recess Reminder Being Prepared for Outdoor Recess - we try to hold outside recess as much as possible throughout the winter months! Please be sure that your child comes to school dressed appropriately for outside play - warm coats, hats, and mittens/gloves are a must, otherwise students will not be allowed to go outside for recess. When there is snow on the ground, students must also have boots and snow pants if they wish to play in the snow.

Music Corner By: Shelley Irvin-Kent, Music Teacher Kindergarteners have recently learned the name for a skill we’ve been working on all year: STEADY BEAT. Students can listen to music and pat a steady beat. A steady beat stays the same and doesn’t go faster or slower. Ask your child to sing “Bounce High” and tap the images below. Make sure they stay steady! Second graders just learned a new pitch: DO. Students know that DO is a skip lower than mi and that it’s a copycat of so and mi. Ask your child to sing the following with hand signs and then tell you what song it matches! As always, please contact me with any questions or ideas! Ms. Irvin-Kent
Art Corner By: Laurie Gaines, Art Teacher Steam night is approaching fast – Save the Date! Wednesday, February 27th. 4th grade students have been creating cardboard games and hope to share them at Steam Night. Here are a couple of our arcade games to inspire.
Coaches Corner By: Nili Pearlmutter, Math Coach Did you know that there is a new Game and Puzzle Club for 4th and 5th graders? The club is run by Nataliya Yufa, founder of Cambridge Math Circle, and is a great opportunity for students to engage in logical thinking and creative problem solving. The club runs from 7:15-7:55AM on Wednesday mornings. (Students who take the bus can come as soon as their bus gets in.) Huge thank you to Nataliya, who has been donating her time to start this club, and to Alicia Volpicelli who has been our parent volunteer. We can use more parent volunteers, as well. You don’t need to have any special knowledge - just be willing to think, play, and have fun with the students! Please contact Nili Pearlmutter, Haggerty Math Coach, (npearlmutter@cpsd.us) if you are interested in helping out. Right now the club is full, but if your child is interested in participating, ask them to tell their teacher as space might open up if we get more volunteers.
