Celebration of Reading on Read Across America Day! Children and teachers have been celebrating Read Across America since 1998 when the National Educators Association (NEA) initiated a nationwide celebration of reading. Formerly, the event was celebrated on Dr. Seuss’ birthday, March 2. In recent years, the NEA has redesigned the nation’s celebration of reading. The new focus celebrates our diverse nation of readers, authors, and books that allow all children to see themselves in the books they read. On March 15, Haggerty School celebrated Read Across America Day in various ways: dressing as favorite book characters, hosting guest readers and decorating classroom doors with a book theme. The day ended with a whole school assembly focused on sharing books students love.

Race Matters: Book Suggestion The Youngest Marcher: The Story of Audrey Faye Hendricks, A Young Civil Rights Activist Meet the youngest known child to be arrested for a civil rights protest in Birmingham, Alabama, 1963. This moving picture book proves you’re never too little to make a difference. When nine-year-old Audrey Faye Hendricks heard grown-ups talk about wiping out Birmingham’s segregation laws, she volunteered to get arrested, even though it meant she would have to go to jail. This is the remarkable and inspiring story of one child’s role in the Civil Rights Movement. Ages 5–10.

Gender Neutral Bathrooms at Haggerty Haggerty's bathrooms are all gender neutral, except for the ones in the basement outside the gym. We have more and more staff, parents, families, and students who are preferring gender neutral prounouns (they/them instead of she/he). We are inclusive at Haggerty and welcoming of all and for this reason we have gender neutral bathrooms. In the Haggerty community, all gender identities and gender expressions are welcome.

Farm School Trip! Our fifth grade went on a two-night field trip to the Farm School in Athol MA in February. This trip was made possible by funding from the Friends of Haggerty, and fundraising by the fifth grade. This trip is often our students first time away from home, and working on a farm! They help with all the farm chores and make their own food. It is a wonderful adventure. Here is a reflection about the trip from one of our fifth graders: "I loved EVERYTHING about Farm School, from the food, to the animals, and honestly I could go on and on. First of all, the farmers that are with you are the nicest people ever! They are caring (to both kids and animals), helpful, kind, etc. They make you feel very welcome, and are always there for you. Then there are the animals (one of my personal favorite parts of Farm School). Farm School has 4 dogs, two of which I met. Their names were Gus and Ursa, and they were super sweet. Many kids who are scared of dogs grow to love them, because they are very nice, and social. Then they have two horses, many, many cows (and calves), two pigs named Freddy and Squiggles, three goats named Felicia, Ethel, and Bunny, and many many many chickens." –By Niamh
