Everyone is Different. Everyone Belongs.
Winter Peace Concert All students in grades JK-4 performed in the annual Haggerty Peace Day concert, along with Haggerty Chorus, optional for grades 3-5. Ms. Irvin-Kent led kindergarten, first, and second grade in their performances. Our second music teacher, Mr. Mooney, led the third and fourth grade in several beautiful pieces, with the fourth grade using their recorders! Haggerty Chorus closed the concert with four songs, including Lift Every Voice and Sing. Mr. McGonegal accompanied both the Kindergarten and the First grade on his guitar for a couple songs. We hope everyone takes the messages in our music and creates peace in the world.

Coaches Corner By :Suzanne Russell, ELA Coach Grade 5 Featured Author: Ali, Genre: Personal Narrative Jumping off the Bridge Me and my mom walked to the bridge where people would jump off into the ocean. We were both scared as we watched people jump into the deep cold water. It was about a 17 foot drop in to dark blue water. It would soon be our turn to jump into the water. When our turn came, I asked my mom if she would go first. As I watched in fear my mom jumped off the mildly rusted metal. My mom hit the water with a splash that almost reached my nose. It was my turn. As I got ready to jump, a strike of fear swept through my body. But I had to jump in, it was what I came for. My foot scraped the rust as I jumped through the air, “Ahhhhh!” I darted through the water. Eventually I bobbed to the surface. The water froze my bones as I swam to the jagged rocks that I used to climb up. I was so happy, it felt like I was in the air forever. Full of adrenalin as me and my mom walked back on the dirt path home, happy.

Oge Mora Grades 2-4 Rising star children’s book author Ms. Oge Mora met with Haggerty students on December 7. Her Senior project for Rhode Island School of Design’s Illustration major produced Thank You, Omu and placed her on the NYT Notable books of 2018, as well as many other great book lists of 2018. Her visit was a perfect opportunity for a collaboration between the librarian, Ms. Sarah Novogrodsky, Art teacher, Ms. Laurie Gaines and the district’s personal narrative writing curriculum. Ms. Mora described her inspirations (Aminah Robinson http://www.aminahsworld.org/, Tomie dePaola https://www.tomie.com/ and Faith Ringgold http://www.faithringgold.com/) and even shared her own first grade personal narrative. By the end of the visit, students understood the amount of work that goes into making a book. Ms. Mora explained to the students that she believes picture books bring people together just as the Nigerian stew made by her Omu did. We can’t wait to see her next book, Saturday, which will be published in Fall of 2019. We moved from the library to the art room for collage sessions and advice from Oge. Can’t wait to share our collage with the Haggerty community. In the meantime - here are some photos of our day with Oge Mora and the students’ collage to accompany their personal narrative writing. Rotary dictionary donations - Every year third graders throughout the district are the lucky recipients of a dictionary. Thank you Cambridge Rotarians! Remember to visit Cambridge Public Library over the winter break.
Tech Corner By: Kevin McGonegal, Technology Instructor The Haggerty Month of Code It's been a great month of coding at the Haggerty School! All month long technology classes JK-4 have been delving into Computational Thinking and Computer Programming (5th grade has been finishing a video project, so we'll code next month!). During our time together, we have been focusing on activities that promote computational thinking, computer programming and creative coding. We live in a world dependent on technology and we know that in whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on an understanding of how technology works. By participating in this "Month of Code," our students have developed an understanding of what's happening "under the hood" of the technology we use, and their imaginations have been "sparked" as they begin to devise what technology will bring us in the future. Learn more at the links below, and try out one of the fun ”Hour of Code" activities with your family! Hour of Code Activities: Try the "Dance Party!" https://code.org/learn Scratch Jr. (Awesome free iOS/Android app for students K-2!) https://www.scratchjr.org/ Scratch (Great web-based programming language for students grades 3 and up!) https://scratch.mit.edu/
Learning & Professional Time Like any other resource, schools must use their time wisely if we hope to realize the promise of educational equity through rigorous, joyful, and culturally responsive experiences for all learners. In 2017-18, a joint group of educators and administrators, co-chaired by leaders from the Cambridge Education Association (CEA) and CPS Office of Curriculum and Instruction recommended that CPS “lengthen the standard day for students and staff at all levels.” After an extensive collaborative process, the Superintendent of Schools has decided to propose a moderate increase to the 6 hour elementary and upper school day, along with guidelines for effectively meeting the educational, developmental, and social-emotional needs of students. A new FAQ has been posted in response to questions we have received during the community feedback process. More details from surveys, working groups, and feedback sessions will be posted soon.
