Beautiful Music at the Spring Concert! Congratulations to all who performed in Haggerty’s Spring Concert on May 31. From songs in Dari (Afghanistan), Hawaiian, Japanese, Hindi, Spanish, and French, fourth graders playing Beethoven on recorders and a 5th grade brass solo in Jazz Me, to singing in two parts, three parts, and four parts (!), everyone performed beautifully. Thank you to Shelley Irvin-Kent and Kilian Mooney for their hard work and dedication.

JK/Kindergarten Art Show! Thursday, June 6th West Cambridge Youth Center (680 Huron Ave.)
Music Corner By: Shelley Irvin-Kent, Music Teacher Haggerty Chorus Haggerty Chorus participated in the First Annual Singing Festival at Cambridge Rindge and Latin on May 29. Haggerty brought the largest group, representing with 48 students in the chorus! The afternoon was full of rehearsal, playing on the playground, soccer games, pizza, and more rehearsal. We sang our own set (Arlequin dans sa boutique, The Owls, and Jazz Me) and then performed with the festival chorus of 120+ students. The Festival Chorus performed Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing, Red River Dances, Al Shlosha d’Varim, and Bicycles. Many thanks to our chaperones Nancy Campbell, Allison Celimli, Sue Mapel, Nordell Randall and Jen Richards for all their help. We look forward to participating again next year! Haggerty Chorus took one final field trip to Neville Place on June 7. The residents of Neville Manor were thoroughly entertained!
Return those Books! Please return all library books. We need to do inventory for September. Thank you! Fourth/Fifth graders host author of Extraordinary Birds. California fifth grade teacher, Sandy Stark-McGinnis, visited with students to discuss her debut novel, which is receiving accolades from many corners of the children’s literature world. “This is the story of 11-year-old December’s reluctant and courageous struggle from heartbreaking disappointment to trust. McGinnis writes a sensitive story about family, trust, bullying, mental health, and identity in a way that middle-grade kids can empathize with.” Kids Indie Next List, Spring 2019 Look for the book at your favorite library branch or independent bookstore. Once again, the second graders are finishing the school year with a dive into the world of birds. In addition to enjoying great narrative nonfiction read alouds, students are all researching a specific bird. Fresh Pond’s Ranger Tim generously visited with us and taught us about the five owls that live around Fresh Pond. He also encouraged the students to stop by and say, “Hi,” this summer. It has been my pleasure to be your child’s school librarian this year. Even though the school library is closed for the summer, you can stock up on books at the Cambridge Public Library for FREE. If you don’t have a library card, or have lost one, just let the library know and they will put a new one in your hands. In addition to the local branches of the CPL, Haggerty students can access audiobooks/ebooks on our school website. From the Haggerty homepage, select the library/technology link or book icon. The “Search the Catalog” link will bring you and your child to a variety of audio and ebook options, as well as databases for any summer research needs. SORA app works for upcoming third graders - fifth grade, students who have a school district Google account. This is available through our state library resources. Your child should be familiar with the wide range of audiobooks and ebooks. This is a great way for 4th -5th graders to get started on listening to or reading online the Massachusetts Children’s Book Award titles. Tumblebooks needs the username: cambridgeps and password: reads. Students can then follow along to animated read alouds, fiction and nonfiction. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. I am on school email over the summer - snovogrodsky@cpsd.us

One more day to donate to our Annual Appeal! It's not too late to help us meet our goal of 100% participation!
Library/ELA Coach Collaboration Sarah Novogrodsky and Suzanne Russell It gives us great pleasure to announce the publication of the first fifth grade newspaper, Haggerty NOW. Beginning on February 6, thirteen Haggerty fifth graders started a student newspaper. The Newspaper Club met after school for nine weeks. In collaboration or working as a solo journalist, students choose to report about current events, a story or an opinion piece. During those sessions, students studied adult and student created newspapers, met with a local newspaper editor, drafted and revised their pieces, and Skyped with a producer from 60 Minutes. The following students are now Haggerty’s first news journalists: Hazel M., Le’Shawn A. Hamza Y., Ali W., Niamh R., Imran Y., Zihaam J., Suleyman S., Dante R., Maggie B., Barbara L.P., Maya N., Benji W.

Thank you for a wonderful year of Art!
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) By Erin Spencer, Haggerty Social Worker It is not at all surprising that at this time many parents and children are managing high levels of anxiety. A lot of anxiety is transmitted through the environment, often inadvertently through what Lynn Lyons, international speaker and psychotherapist, refers to as “safety chatter,” which can be overt parental expression of fear and worry or a more subtle expression of fear through excessive explanation and accommodation. While adult support, advocacy, and accomodation can be essential for creating the conditions for success for many of our children, certain adult responses and interventions can inadvertently be limiting and diminish resiliency if it unnecessarily sends anxious children the message that something in fact needs to be fixed for them and that any discomfort or uncertainty is not something they can manage or problem-solve independently. Similarly, when our kids discover a particular pattern of behavior works, often a pattern that ensures adult support and attention, they will often continue to use it as long as it is intermittently reinforced. As parents, we are tasked with being mindful to our own responses and reactions to the challenges and difficulties our children face. It is particularly hard to watch our kids struggle and it is a natural urge to make our children happy and remove the obstacles in their way. This NPR report on Morning Edition discusses a program that encourages parents to learn to let anxious children face their fears. At the Haggerty, we are always considering the question: what are our practices both within school and supporting families that allow our youth to effectively cope with stressors through discovering their own solutions, resources, and resiliency? Fifth Graders Moving On On Thursday, June 13th, our fifth graders hosted their final assembly - and celebrated their years at Haggerty. The fifth graders broke up into groups of 5 to 6 and each took on memorializing a grade from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade. It was a walk down memory lane, a celebration of learning, friends and teachers. They also sang "Happy" by Pharrell Williams (thanks Ms. Irvin-Kent!), and put items in the Time Capsule, they will come back and retrieve when they graduate high school! After the assembly, the fifth graders and their family went to the West Cambridge Youth center for a celebratory lunch! Thanks to the fifth grade teachers, Ms. Stewart, Ms . Faucher, Ms. Lindhorst, Ms. Foster and Ms. Hickey! Thanks also to all the fifth grade parents who organized a wonderful celebration! We will miss you, fifth graders!
Haggerty Day Fun! On Monday, June 17th, the entire Haggerty School marched up Cushing Street to begin our day of fun at Glacken Field for Haggerty Day! We were led by some fourth and fifth grade drummers and a Haggerty banner. Grades Kindergarten - 2nd took the first shift and Grades 3 - 5 took the second - in a day of fun-filled stations. We lucked out with the weather! Thank you to the many parent volunteers who make this day possible! And a very big thank you to our Physical Education teacher Mr. Materazzo for organizing and directing this wonderful day of fun!
The chicks are hatched in our JK-Kindergarten classrooms!
