Welcome to The Friday Five
"A game is a system in which players engage in an artificial conflict, defined by rules, that results in a quantifiable outcome."(Salen& Zimmerman,2003)
Gameful Learning is an approach to school through the lens of designing a game and using games design principles to create a learning environment that engages and motivates students to learn.

Design thinking is a human-centered approach to problem solving that begins with developing empathy for those facing a particular challenge. In schools, it can serve as a framework for providing students with meaningful work that allows them to grow in their ability to define problems, empathize with others, create prototypes of their ideas, and hone those prototypes through multiple iterations until they have generated a viable solution to the challenge at hand. Design thinking encourages students to have a bias toward action (don't wait until you're older to make a difference; do it now!) and because of its reliance on rapid prototyping, frees them to embrace the notion of failing forward(it's OK to make mistakes; that's how we learn).

The are MANY tools, resources, and organizations that aid schools in offering students more autonomy and agency in order to drive their own learning and eventually pursue their own passions. The Digital Multimedia Learning Team will be highlighting this idea over the coming months, but check out Imblaze.org a platform for connecting schools and students with internships within their communities.
