As this semester comes to a close we and our students can find ourselves more than a little stressed. Whether it is an 11thhour push or a growing mound of papers to be graded, we could all use a little de-stress and motivation. Here are FIVE ways to reduce stress in the classroom.

Even if you are, let's say "humor challenged," there are things you can do to lighten the load and dissipate the clouds in your classroom. Just remember, above all, that sarcasm has a very limited role in school. Only "no hurt" humor is acceptable.
Laugh at yourself -- when you do something silly or wrong, mention it and laugh at it.
Add humorous items to tests, homework or class assignments. Just make sure you're not sacrificing validity for humor.
Ask students to try to build humor into occasional writing assignments -- that will start a conversation about what is funny, how they know something is funny, why different people find some things funny but some things are funny to almost everyone.

It's not uncommon to find that much of our stress exists of our own creation, but this conclusion is most often drawn after gaining a new perspective.
Have you ever taken some time talk to colleagues about their professional practice? Start a dialogue about what has or hasn't worked for them in their classrooms and share some of your successes and failures. Sooner or later you just to see things from a different angle.
Ever wondered what it's like to be a student in your classroom? As it turns out it's easy to find out. Chances are you have several experts in the subject matter right in front of you. Take some time to ask your students about their experiences in your classroom. You just might learn something about yourself that you didn't realize and may give you a new and welcomed perspective.

College Football Bowl Season is upon us-- the perfect time to use this metaphor! In education we often emphasize large milestones -- end of semester grades, summative assessments, projects, etc. What message does this create for our struggling students? Perhaps one of defeat, anxiety, or hopelessness? What if we celebrated small victories with equal energy as we did those larger milestones? Evidence of growth is not exclusive to assessments, it's also present in our interactions with students. Asking a clarifying question, seeking assistance from peers, and actively listening can all be evidence of growth, and are just a deserving of a rousing round of applause as any A+.
Think about what celebrating your students' first downs as loudly as their touchdowns could do for their confidence.
