What matters to SpeakOut! writers? What matters to you?
what matters... to SpeakOut! writers...
I am a mother. I am young. I am scared. I am strong and amazing and I will never change. --------------------------------- ...finally a crack of light within my soul , I’m starting over, here I go. --------------------------------- ...make war go away & make friends of those we would normally not take time to know... --------------------------------- Now we found the right colors and light shine in with the force of a million. --------------------------------- Life, happy forever or happy lost in the land of never. --------------------------------- Your smile. All the daddy’s and I love you’s my first and only child...

What matters is: being genuine and kind ------------------------- What matters is doing what you want to do as long as you're not hurting anyone.
------------------------------- What matters is being healthy, happy, and free even if your choices disappoint those you care about. Only YOU can live your life, and it's too short to let someone else dictate it. ---------------------------- What matters is not what you are, but what you become.
While considering the possibilities of writing, as workshop facilitators we are also confronted with the challenges that occur in trying to reach these goals. Two issues, in particular, that have affected these goals for my youth SpeakOut group are: 1) group cohesion and 2) a hesitancy to publish. To begin with, the SpeakOut group has both a wide variety of backgrounds and a lot of participant turnover. Secondly, publishing can be daunting because of its inherent risks. Opening yourself up to a public audience has its healing qualities but it also increases a person’s vulnerability because you lose control over who reads it.
Take a look at our intern blogs! Every two weeks they comment on reading from the academic sector and beyond, part of their ongoing discovery of community literacy.

In Time In the midst of destruction and chaos comes the depth of unanswered whys the false truth that is spoken to me, to you the hopeful lies that I’ve always been told the broken pieces of disappointment the unattached tears, so quick to wipe away the screams deep down that no one can hear my heart that fights the right and wrongs my beautiful soul roars, the time is now my eyes burst with loss and acceptance staring down my path of uncertain success (and failures) along with promising good byes and beloved hellos. - Heidi K.
