"No student ever attains very eminent success by simply doing what is required of him. It is the amount of excellence of what is over and above the required, that determines the greatness of ultimate distinction." - Charles Kendall Adams

As I was thinking of this edition’s topic, the subject of student success came to mind. What does the adult learner need to be successful when returning to get their degree? I did what everyone else would do to get some ideas - a Google search. I found more articles, blogs, downloads, and websites than I can tell you. I cannot begin to reiterate the information in the search nor, in some instances, could I say it better. I would encourage everyone to do a similar search and get some pointers. Instead, I changed direction a little bit to try and explain what the School of Professional Studies has recently done to help you succeed. Our New Student Orientation gives pertinent information to help you navigate the higher educational environment in general and at UIW. In our early days, it was in-person, first at the UIW Library Auditorium then the International Conference Center Auditorium. This helped the San Antonio student, but online was left out. We also had a dismal attendance record because it was either a Saturday morning or weekday night. We evolved to an online website for orientation that lasted a few years and was open to everyone. In the last year, we became more proactive with a Blackboard orientation course. We enroll every new student in the course so it shows up on their Blackboard home page. If you haven’t taken it, or you want to take it, speak with our Student Success office to get enrolled. The Office of Student Success is new to assist you with the skills needed to help make your academic career a success. There are two employees in this area, Dione and Mayra. Their offices are at the Northwest Center. Their web page lists an array of services available to you. They have tutorials for time management, test-taking, study skills, and career development. A writing refresher is open to everyone. I encourage you to at the least look at their web page. I am sure the time spent will be helpful.

A word from our Dean
Meet the Mission is organized and sponsored by the Office of Mission and Ministry, under the leadership of Sr.Walter Maher, and is held every September. On Meet the Mission Day, UIW students and staff engage the greater San Antonio community with service. Since the first MtM Day, the event has grown to see over 200 members of the UIW community deploy to over 25 Community Partner sites to perform service projects on a single day. This year, the 13th annual Meet the Mission Day will take place on Friday, September 14th, 2018, and we will start and end the day at the McDermott Convocation Center in two waves beginning at 7:30 am. This is a great opportunity to connect with other members of the UIW family and community. For more information about this event or to sign-up as a participant, please visit www.uiw.edu/meetthemission.
