Holiday 2019
What was once a large simple grass area is now a dreamy backyard resort right in this family's back yard. For this family, their main vision for the space was to create a courtyard effect with a feeling of enclosure. They desired to maintain a sense of privacy while still being able to enjoy their home’s breath-taking Pacific Northwest view. The house’s exterior mainly consisted of dark siding and wood elements and a rigid structure showing off all three levels, so our client requested this style to show through in the design plan as well as incorporating several elements already in place--such as a wooden pergola just outside the back door.

Backyard Resort
The Perfect fuse of Modern Design and Natural Details
To make our client's vision come to life, we bordered the landscape with several shrubs, colorful perennials and small trees. We chose a combination of small Japanese maple and snowbell trees at the edge of the property to provide the perfect balance of privacy and height. In addition, we implemented plenty of natural and LED lighting so that the closed space was well lit. Small shrubs and short ornamental grasses delicately positioned around the yard broke up the space without obstructing the view. This backyard resort also contained several specially designed elements, each echoing the intentional modern and linear design: a Corten Steel fireplace, rock water feature and large climbing rocks for the children’s space.
As requested, the final landscape offered privacy while including both adult and kid-friendly spaces that easily flowed together. A beautiful water feature at the focal point drew eyes towards the magnificent view on the horizon--just as our family imagined. From the modern design to the inclusion of natural details, this project resulted in several eye-catching elements that our clients are sure to enjoy for years to come.
Unlike the majority of families that we work with, this client already had a large in-ground pool. Upon realizing that the space was not functional for their family's needs, they asked our team to jump in. By leveling various heights of awkward decking and introducing porcelain pavers surrounding a redesigned pool coping, the whole backyard took on a refreshed, inviting feel that was exactly what our client was looking for. They also wanted to incorporate a fireplace accessible even on the rainiest days. Thus, our designer brought in an elegant stone fire pit near the house and yet safely covered by the deck above.
Reimagined Backyard Beauty
When discovering your landscape's potential, it is crucial to not neglect the front of your home, which sets the tone for visitors. For this family, we retrofitted the old, crumbling entryway to ensure the original style lasts for years to come. Remodeling the driveway with pavers as accents and charming landscaping on either side gave the home the grand entrance it deserved. Weaving this style into the pathways that led around to the back of the house brought consistency and the desired sophistication.
Did you know that it could take 4 - 6 weeks to design and schedule out a backyard resort style landscape like those featured here? Alderwood has a very defined process that makes it easy for the customer. If you are planning to schedule a design in the Spring of 2020 or even later that year, have you met with your architect to start on the design? If not, it is very important to do this now. PLANNING A LANDSCAPE DESIGN ?
To add color around the pool during the summer months, we used several types of perennials such as Daylilies, Autumn Ferns and Black-Eyed Susans. Gulf Stream dwarf conifers and several varieties of Rhododendrons added interest as well. When it comes to extraordinary curb appeal, using several different plants and varieties of foliage could be the difference between a simple landscape and a luxurious resort.
Our team focused on creating an inviting atmosphere by increasing the amount of light and color. The first of these was accomplished by slimming existing larger trees and implementing sources of LED lighting around the fence line.

By using the drone footage, our design experts are able to quickly gather information onsite using orthomosaic maps, elevation data and 360 degree aerial images. These aerial images allow designers the ability to create a virtual reality tour of the site. This feature is valuable for our designers because it enables them to see the property first hand without missing the finer details. For clients, the imagery helps them visualize their outdoor paradise. In addition, it allows Alderwood to share completed backyard resorts for customers to view and enjoy.
A Different Perspective
Alderwood is giving clients a brand new way of viewing their backyard renovations. By implementing drone aerial imagery, we are better able to communicate with clients while also helping our own design team. By improving survey and data accuracy, these drone videos and the photogrammetric 3D models result in faster workflow and elegantly refined designs. This creates an integrated workflow of the project from initial survey to final design.
