Transformation in action. That’s the phrase that always comes to mind during autumn – my favorite time of year. The leaves, with their explosion of color, vibrantly remind us of the cyclical nature of life. And this month the IOC gears up for our annual conference, one of the world’s largest gatherings of practitioners in the transformative profession of coaching. This year is particularly special as we celebrate our 10th anniversary, bringing together a smorgasbord of luminaries: Dan Goleman, Margaret Wheatley, Marshall Goldsmith, Susan Cain, Whitney Johnson, James Prochaska and Ryan Niemec, just to name a few! Even more important, our annual conference shines a light on what we are most passionate about at the IOC: evidence-based research that supports the transformational work of our global community of coaches. Here are just a few examples of the research that will be presented at the conference: Grant Recipient: Gordon Spence, PhD—Coaching for employee engagement using self-determination theory. Grant Recipient: Les Schwab, PhD—Coaching to improve well-being and reduce burnout in physicians. Grant Recipients: Steven Wendell, PhD and Janice Sabatine—Coaching for sustained career development among graduate students. The work of these scholars – and many more – point to the power of coaching to transform and enrich lives. This month’s recommended book, from one of the IOC’s dear friends, Dan Goleman, also follows this theme of transformation. Altered Traits explores the history, evolution and scientific underpinnings of the power of meditation as a practice that can ineluctably change us: mind, heart and being. And, in this month’s webinar, Carlos Davidovich presents a neuroscience-based deep-dive into unconscious bias, reminding us that transformation always begins at home – as a quest for self-awareness.
Director's Corner
We hope you will join us to experience our 10th anniversary celebration, but if you are unable to be in Boston on the 13th-14th of October, don’t despair! Many of the keynotes, talks and research sessions will be filmed and available for viewing on our website. So, no matter where you are in the world, you are invited to join us on the journey of transformation. Namaste, Jeff
Compendium of the Health and Wellness Literature
We are proud to have been one of the primary sponsors for the recently published review and compendium of the current research on the impact of health and wellness coaching. Authors: Gary A. Sforzo, PhD, Miranda P. Kaye, PhD, Irina Todorova, PhD, Sebastian Harenberg, PhD, Kyle Costello, BS, Laura Cobus-Kuo, MLIS, MPA, Aubrey Faber, BS, Elizabeth Frates, MD, and Margaret Moore, MBA The authors' stated goals were to create a tool that “will assist practitioners and researchers in shaping the applied and theoretical future of health and wellness coaching (HWC) as an adjunct treatment for chronic lifestyle-related diseases.” ABSTRACT Health and wellness coaching (HWC) for lifestyle behavior change is emerging as a practice, role, and profession, in diverse health care, employee wellness, and community settings. Health care professionals apply HWC as a behavior change methodology for the prevention and treatment of diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, heart disease, cancer, and other chronic disorders. They applied a standardized definition of HWC to determine compendium inclusion criteria for peer-reviewed, data-based literature from relevant search engines (ie, PubMed, PsychInfo, CINAHL). The resulting HWC compendium organizes and describes the quantity and quality of available literature for the use and benefit of HWC practitioners and researchers.
In the last twenty years, meditation and mindfulness have gone from being kind of cool to becoming an omnipresent Band-Aid for fixing everything from your weight to your relationship to your achievement level. Unveiling here the kind of cutting-edge research that has made them giants in their fields, Daniel Goleman and Richard J. Davidson show us the truth about what meditation can really do for us, as well as exactly how to get the most out of it. Sweeping away common misconceptions and neuromythology to open readers’ eyes to the ways data has been distorted to sell mind-training methods, the authors demonstrate that beyond the pleasant states mental exercises can produce, the real payoffs are the lasting personality traits that can result.
Jeff Hull discusses how coaching is ideally suited as a primary intervention in support of the transformational and developmental path towards a post-heroic perspective. You can also read Jeff's related blog post: From Alpha and Beta to Back: Coaching the Post-Heroic Leader.
In this webinar, we will explore coaching strategies and the most recent research topics related to career coaching. These include combining group and one-on-one career coaching, honoring the client’s adult development stage and personality type preferences, and the role of assessments such as the Career Adapt-Ability Scale (CAAS) associated with Career Construction theory of Mark Savickas.
NOVEMBER Career Coaching for the 21st Century with Steve Wendell, PhD and Janice Manzi Sabatine, PhD, PCC Thursday, November 16th Time: 1:00 pm - 2:15 am EDT
Neuroscience research has begun to ‘connect the dots’ on how the brain works and how brain functioning supports both conscious and unconscious thought processes. With this newfound knowledge, we are beginning to understand the power of unconscious bias and its impact on behavior, decision-making and interpersonal dynamics. It is important for coaches to be knowledgeable about unconscious bias, since its impact--and fallout—is part of our daily life.
OCTOBER Unconscious Cognitive Biases in the Coaching Practice with Carlos Davidovich Wednesday, October 18th Time: 9:00 am - 10:15 am EDT
10th Annual Coaching in Healthcare and Leadership Conference October 13th and 14th, 2017 in Boston, Massachusetts.
