Make Mine Empty
There was a time when you would pull into a gas station, the attendant would come to your window and you might say, “fill-er-up!”
These day, when out for breakfast or another meal, a table server might ask if they could, “top-off” your coffee, your water, or even a soft drink.
For many of us, we live in a time of abundance. We live in a time where there are ample resources, and it appears that we have all we need—and more. We have the basics of life and multiple versions of creature comforts all the day long. We are blessed! Rarely is our refrigerator empty or cupboard bare.
There is however, a place where we want it to be empty. A space unoccupied. A place that we don’t want to see anything at all.
On the first day of the week after Jesus was crucified and then laid in the tomb, the women went out before it was light to his grave. As they were on the way, they wondered who would roll the big stone away from the entrance. But as they came upon the grave, they found it was empty. They were very surprised—expecting to see a dead body, they saw nothing. As they stood there in confusion, an angel asked them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!”
It finally became clear to these women and eventually the other disciples—and now to us. Empty is good! Life burst out of the empty tomb on Easter. A grave cannot hold life, as a grave is only for the dead. Life is the gift that has been given to all who believe—life here and now, and then eventually eternal life! One day, even our own graves and the graves of other believers will burst out with life! We will all be raised from the dead when Jesus returns, and on that day he will give us life everlasting.
It’s good that we have things that are full. A full gas tank. Beverage cups that are filled to the brim. Full refrigerators. A full pantry. However, when it comes to the grave—make mine empty!

Parent volunteer hour
It is hard to believe that we are near the end of Week 5 of the 4th Quarter of School!
At this point in the year, it is appropriate to remind all MCL households of our Parent Volunteer requirement of 20 hours per family, per year. Families receiving financial assistance will need to complete an additional 10 hours of service. Families with excessive tardies will also be required to complete additional hours outlined in our attendance policy.
The MCL Parent Volunteer Hours program operates on a “self-reporting” process, reviewed by staff. Parent volunteer hours are tracked via the “Service Hours” volunteer record system button in each family’s Gradelink account.
Please log-on via your parent account and see what you have reported thus far—if this is incorrect, please make any adjustment to your hours as necessary. If you have any questions, please direct them to Ann Lovell in the School Office. For a review of the policy, please click HERE.
Also, please note that if your family does not complete the required 20 hours, you will be billed $10 for every hour short of the required 20. Billing of accounts will occur the week of May 13-17.

Josselyn Cheng has earned the honor of being selected student of the month for March in 6th grade. Josselyn set the goal of becoming student of the month, and achieved it through hard work and good decision making. She is an excellent student, earning honor roll recognition during each quarter the school year. She is always willing to give her best effort no matter the task she is faced with. During the year, she has worked to develop the skills of an independent learner. Additionally, she demonstrates responsibility by submitting her work on time, and with great care. Joselyn has positioned herself for success not only in sixth grade, but continuing in the future. Congratulations!

Carmen Tsoi has earned March’s Student of the Month in eighth grade. Carmen is a student who CAREs. She focuses on her academics putting forth the extra time and effort needed to complete all her assignments on time and accurately. Carmen has excelled in her language acquisition and continues to make strides in learning not only a new language but also the concepts discussed in each subject. Carmen has also conducted herself in a positive manner. She treats everyone with respect and as a result is well liked in middle school. Her positive outlook and fun personality are a great addition to the class. Sadie Fletcher is our Puppy Trainer for this month. In a recent classroom poll, the students selected her as an outstanding trainer for our puppy Fame. Fame has learned to perform many of her commands from the students. Sadie has been an outstanding helper by giving up recesses and lunch breaks to come work with our pup! Thank you Sadie!
Ria Choi is 5th grade’s student of the month. Although Ria is new to Mt. Calvary she has already made a huge impact on the 5 th grade class. She is an incredible role model and self-motivated learner that is always challenging herself to do her very best. Ria brings joy and practices Christ-like values to those around her while encouraging others to work together. She consistently exceeds expectations. Just recently in third quarter, she received honor roll and surpassed her AR goal with only having been here for part of the quarter. She is willing to work with anyone, promotes others to do their very best and is always asking how she can help. It is a pleasure to have you here at Mt. Calvary, congratulations Ria.
